In other BIG news tonight

Definitely some funny math. We need a benefactor again.
Not funny math , they are just spending their money smarter. I know Suriano doesn`t even need a scholarship his father is a big NJ surgeon doctor. I wouldn`t be surprised if he gives up his scholarship to someone after his 1st year. Plus getting PA. kids got to saving them some money also.

So they aren't recruiting poor kids? Great strategy, I guess....................and the other schools that were recruiting Suriano??????? Were they not as smart as Penn State? Thought so.

"surgeon doctor"
Is that a doctor that specializes in treating surgeons?

Not every wealthy parents just feels like paying their way for a kid that could be getting a full ride at about 95% of the d1 schools out there.

Trust me once in the room and on the team , in order to make Penn state stronger some or all of his scholarship money will become available . Yes Cael knew this in advance. Just like many out East thought Cael was crazy for letting Marstellar a 4 time PA champ go, but he saw more into then that.Cael is getting more quality kids buying into his way. Most of the top kids in pa. attend most of there meets and hang out with many on the team. Spencer Lee , teasdale and most others with in 50 miles have strong ties to Penn state.

I can tell you this. Even at Iowa in the heyday of Gable when there were probably even more guys, than PSU, willing to take a little less scholarship money to get a chance to wrestle for the best coach in the history of any sport almost all the guys were still very concerned about the amount of scholarship money they were getting. Even though they knew they could have got more somewhere else. And in general it seemed like the kids with wealthy parents were even more concerned about it.

So call me a little skeptical when I here that every recruit that goes to PSU is just willing to give up their scholarship, without some kind of promise of something down the road, because their parents are wealthy and want to be part of something big.

From my experience even the wealthiest and most unselfish of wrestlers have a hard time doing this once they have that scholarship locked up.

I heard they were given a promise of being reimbursed for the money they give up once they graduate.

Ames was voted the best college town in the U.S...so don't knock it. Also, being in PA and being Cael is a huge advantage. He might have been a 4 timer and an Olympic champ but this is still Gable's and Iowa's state. Cael couldn't compete in state so he left his own alma mater and headed East. Smart move being near PA, NJ, Ohio, and NY.
I don't disagree, but your list has nothing to do with in state tuition as was asserted. I see that argument as self pity. Penn State went and got Cael because the school and the alums see winning at wrestling as their natural birthright. And they put money behind the effort. Does it leak through to where it's marginal with the rules? Not impossible.

Natural birthright? There wasn't a strong tradition before Cael in terms of national championships. In your scenario, Cael is Nick Saban without a Bear Bryant.

Maybe he was referring to Pennsylvania having the deepest and arguably the best high school wrestling pool. One would think with that in your backyard, your top university should be doing better at the collegiate level.

Well he specifically cited PSU and alums winning as their natural birthright. Had PSU rattled off a crapload of championships in the 80s or 90s, and then had a big lull, then this would make sense. I get the high school thing and like I said above, Cael was smart to make the move out of state because its a talent rich area.

Yes, this. Deep in the woods and mountains of PA wrestling is THE sport. And there was always a mystery as to why Penn State was mediocre for so long.

Hey FM...something I always wondered...Are you a PSU fan? Just wondering, seeing as how you have a pic of Cael as your profile, although he seemed a bit under the weather when it was taken.

I'm the secret Sanderson brother that was raised in the dark, locked in the basement. And I only ate when Puggsly and Wednesday would feed me.
