In other breaking news...

It’s easier and cheaper to watch the game at home. Plus I could watch football before the iowa game.
I mean if I lived in iowa city and had to much money, I’d probably go to all the games.

That's why I don't attend sports events very often even though I live 20 minutes from two MLB Stadiums and an NBA arena. It's a lot of work, expensive and I get a better view at home. I'll go to a few MLB games a summer (my partner works for levis and gets free tickets) and an NFL game and that's about all I can handle.

Damn, somebody had better notify Hilton about all of these excuses.

Maybe they don’t know that it shouldn’t be rocking like it does.

Eastern Iowa fans are lame & don’t have the $ to create a home court advantage.

I propose this every year but I wish Iowa would play 3-4 games per year in Des Moines.

If there’s not enough people or $ in Eastern Iowa, move the product to where the people & $ is.

Plus it’ll put a premium on the games in Carver if there’s fewer options for them to attend.

Wisconsin bball isn't as painful to watch as Iowa football but I'd still probably choose Sunday night football. Especially if I'd been at a game less than 72 hrs prior. This game literally put me to sleep... which was a blessing I guess

I almost wish we would build a new arena and reduce the seating to under 10k. I know this is a big statement but our fans are turning into entitled babies. Who the eff cares what your view is, come make noise.

Iowa Basketball has never really been able to generate enough buzz within the fanbase and has one of the worst student sections in the B1G. I have always been a big supporter of Iowa Football, Basketball and Wrestling. Basketball has by far the worst game atmosphere of the three. Many of my football crowd family and friends are simply luke warm Basketball supporters at best and don't really make the switch once football is over. In arena the atmosphere is mostly dead and watching on tv it looks lame. The basketball arena is really poorly designed.

Back when I lived in Iowa and would go to games regularly if I had an extra basketball ticket I had a hard time finding somebody willing to go from DSM to Iowa City even if it was a Saturday game. Now Wrestling and Football it was a different story. People would fight over those tickets.

So how does Ia. State stand in other sports attendance? Football, wrestling and women's basketball. Do they sell out for everything like Nebraska football? Just asking for a friend!!!

Are you old enough to remember lutes final years?

Was at the game--there were moments in which the crowd was really good throughout most of the game. It was shocking to see how many people around me left when Wisc. hit that 3 to go up 5 with 1.5 minutes in regulation. I thought the crowd for overtime was engaged and loud--probably because all of the wannabes left before the game was over.

Iowa basketball has never really been good! Maybe '86-'87 was the last real team.

Carver sucked tonight. It's a 5:30 Sunday night game. What excuses do we have for this one?
I'll use my Carver Excuse Checklist:
1. Weather
2. Students on Break
3. Weeknight Game
4. Non-Conference Opponent
5. Bad Conference Opponent
6. Game During Another Big Sporting Event
7. Decent Conference Opponent, But Not A Rival
8. Late Night Sunday Game
9. Rivalry Game, But Rival Is Not Good
10. Bad Iowa Team
11. General Apathy Towards Iowa BBall (because the team and coaches are good, but not good enough to win 2 games in a row in the tourney....but remember we had Lickliter and it could be way worse so let's not try to be slightly better. Just worry about the 1 time in Iowa bball history where getting to the tournament was the bare minimum expectation.)

So tell me exactly how you plan to overcome the deal that was made with donors to get Carver built? When Evy went to build Carver he leveraged donors to get donations for the new arena. In exchange donors were promised season tickets for as long as they ordered them. So the donors that gave money to build Carver in the early 1980’s are now 40 years older but can and still do purchase season tickets. They don’t always show up but they still buy tickets.

This wasn’t the case for wrestling or women’s basketball which is why you see a very different fan environment for those sports.

Would love to hear your solution for this.

No solution. We will just have to wait until all these people who made deals 40 years ago die. If the stars align, maybe that will be the same time period as Iowa going on a deep tourney run.

Yeah I’m sure all the players would love playing 3-4 home games away from home.

Why don’t we just see off Barbara Wilson will try and get the university to up and move away from iowa city so we can get more fans at home games.
Doesn’t she know nothing is more important then iowa basketball

The atmosphere will never improve as long as the students need to cross the river. Build a 13,000 arena by the courthouse and you're in business.

Not being argumentative but if I understand your post you say the basketball arena is poorly designed

why is it such a good wrestling environment then…… I have 6 season wrestling tickets and have been in a lot of wrestling environments…… Carver is the best

I’m curious why an arena that is so good for one sport is poorly designed for another…… I personally think the “arena” is fine

Then no reason to complain going forward.

As I posted above the reason for having a different environment for mens basketball vs women’s basketball and wrestling is that donors who helped fund the building of the arena were promised the ability to purchase season basketball tickets for the men as long as they liked. This was 40 years ago so those folks while still buying tickets don’t always show up or are not as involved when they do go to the game. This constraint for ticket purchasing isn’t alive for women’s basketball or wrestling which is why you see a different environment for those events.

they have a bridge….. it’s not like they have to swim
Having a daughter who graduated last year had season tickets except Covid year. The arena is too far for these kids. Cambus doesn’t run enough on game day and is always behind schedule.
The majority of kids live on the east side of the river. Build a smaller arena on the East side of the river and put kids on the floor wrapped around the Iowa Bench and we won’t be having this conversation.
Carver was great in the 80’s and 90’s. Now it’s outdated and full of blue hairs!

I hate to tell him, but Des Moines is not the center of the universe. He makes it sound like New York.

Nobody wants to ride the bus to a game. The want to casually spill out of whatever bar or house they are hanging out at and wander the four or so blocks to the arena.

It is gonna take a big ncaa tournament run to change it.
This

I appreciate that Fran brought us back from Lick but I guess I don't get the free pass that he gets. This is his 13th season and we have zero B1G 10 titles and zero sweet 16 or further appearances. Anywhere else in the country he would be polishing up his resume.

I would have to assume he goes to every iowa wolves game as well. I mean they are a level up from college basketball and have a couple of former iowa players and a former iowa high schooler on the roster. I’m guessing tickets are even cheaper then hawkeye games.

so we need to move the arena to the fans?sounds practical 🤔

I’ve driven cross country to attend sporting events….. often brave bad roads to drive an hour to wrestling meets….. and we’re making excuses for 20 year olds too lazy to walk across a bridge and up a hill to Carver?

And if riding a bus isn’t good enough for them I think there’s a bigger issue

It's an irrational fear that drives me crazy. 13 years is plenty enough time to realize someone's floor and ceiling.

Pretty sure Evy had nothing to do with Hawkeye Carver…

Wow, Fran must be THE BEST COACH there is.....to take a glorified YMCA team and take Wisconsin to overtime!
You think we are better than a glorified YMCA team?
