Indiana hires Dayton's Archie Miller.

Is he an Indiana guy? That's the only way they'll win, ya know.

Miller is a very common name so don't know if everyone knows he is the brother of Arizona coach Sean Miller who is quite successful at the bigger school level.

I wonder if Indiana waited until after Alford's public rejection to name Miller their coach, interesting timing on the week end.

Miller's teams will defend. Always enjoyed watching his Dayton teams play.

Look at the Elite 8, South Carolina and Florida from SEC are there because they defend!

Xavier as well.... I love Fran and our style of play but watching the guards defend from those schools.... we've got to upgrade our backcourt defensively if we want to make deep tourney runs.

Tom Crean was a bigger hire IMO.

Yea......and wasn't IU kinda already at the top of the conference? They certainly were last year and had to endure some tough injuries.....Crean that is.

Not sure this is any bigger a splash then the last one they hired. And there are plenty of very talented HS BB players around the country who would want to play at IU, regardless of the coach.

Fran's Hawkeyes is 1-1 vs Archie Miller's Flyers. Both Archie and Sean coach an elite defense, however, their teams are usually offensively challenged. I agree with the consensus so far, Crean was the bigger hire but Archie definitely knows how to coach.

Marshall seems like a lifer type for WSU. Then again, all coaches say they are happy where they are, but many schools have asked about Marshall through the years...still there.

From what I understand, the plan was to announce on Tuesday. But, when alford came out last night to make it sound like he was the one turning us down....IU didn't want to wait and wanted to show that Alford was never the pick.

Archie!

Indiana just hit the ball out of the park with this hire. He is defensive oriented coach that is a real Xs and Os kind of coach with a penchant for details. He knows the Midwest and can recruit the Indiana and Ohio area. The only thing that I question is will he stay at IU once Thad Matta is shown the door by OSU. Archie was waiting for the OSU job to open. The proof that he is a smart coach- he did not throw his hat into the ring for the NC State job, which is his alma mater. Debbie Yow is a cow and chased off one of the best coaches that NC State has had in a while.

They fired a coach 1 year removed from winning a conference title. Doubt many were throwing themselves at the Indiana job

IU has not won a national title in 30 years (1987 was last title)

Its been 15 years since they advanced past the Sweet 16 (in 2002 they advanced to the National Title game and lost to Maryland)

IU's AD is pretty cocky; here's what he has to say:

"The more I learned about him, the more convinced I became that he is the coach we need to meet our high expectations for many years to come. Archie is a proven leader, proven winner, proven recruiter, and a proven player developer with a defense-first mentality that will help us win championships. Perhaps most importantly, he understands and embraces the special stature of Indiana University basketball and the critical relationship it must have with its former players, Indiana high school players and programs, and the entire State of Indiana."

Archie is Sean's brother.Bright young coach who should be able to recruit Indiana. Crean pissed off the Indy coaches and that was one of the reasons he was let go. Indiana produces the fourth highest NBA talent in the country. If he can recruit Indy and Ft Wayne he will be ok.

IU's AD (Fred Glass) also said this:

"In the final analysis I had to evaluate where Iowa was."

Glass said he attempted to determine who the championship-caliber basketball teams were that Indiana played and he concluded that Iowa wasn’t among them.

“I have a great respect for Iowa,’’Glass said when asked further about the Hawkeye comparison. “It’s a wonderful institution and a wonderful basketball program. But in the final analysis, their record was where it was, our record was where it was. Fair enough?’’

This must be fake news. Dakich "guaranteed" Alford would be the next Indiana coach, and you know Dakich: he's NEVER wrong. Just ask him.

BTW: Why didn't Indiana hire Dakich himself? He knows everything about basketball, and then some. He says so about 31 times every broadcast. Indiana whiffed on this hire. :D

This is a great hire for IU. And, it sucks for the Hawks. He will be a top-tier coach in the B1G IMO

What else is he going to say? Crean just got fired despite numerous NCAA appearances and top finishes in the Big Ten.

Agree it seems like a great hire. Dayton would likely have had a lot more success this past season were it not for the tragic death of one of their best players last spring.

I was hoping they'd hire Alford, would've been good news for Iowa IMO. The naughty person in me was kind of looking forward to him visiting Carver as IU's coach. That could have been very entertaining.

1) That five schools in eight years gig as an assistant coach has me a bit baffled. Especially since the last place was working for his brother. What's the reason for moving around so much?

2) This reputation for defense? He had one year in six at Dayton that was really impressive. At least in comparison to McCaffery who I've seen it said a number of times he doesn't coach defense. Now this doesn't mean I'm slamming Miller, but the reach to proclaim his teams as top notch on defense? Look, Kenpom's ADE rating from year one to now for both McCaffery and Miller:

McCaffery, 58. 206, 25, 77, 33, 30, 124. Miller, 158, 145, 72, 31, 15, 41. Are we SURE we're not just seeing a result of personnel on a team?

3) Sorry, but he's 38 and has been a Head Coach at one school for six years. Indiana? They must have lost a lot of appeal.

My thoughts are Iowa probably dodged a bullet. When I said Indiana could do better than Alford I meant a lot of guys other than Archie Miller. I'm not saying he won't end up a good coach for them. I'm saying it took him less time to be hired as a Head Coach at Indiana than it takes some people to become Managers of a Walmart.

At best. Incomplete resume with some questions about getting along with superiors or being able to settle down in one spot. Not enough experience. A high ceiling, high risk, hire.

But why do AD's always have to say this?

I think he is a good hire. Not a "splash" hire but a heck of a coach.

Looks like Boy Wonder stays out West... at least for another year or two ... or for as long as he can keep getting 5 star recruits.

Is Iowa the comparison for every AD when determining if his program is average or not!?
