So obviously these duals are used by the Hawkeye staff in part to solidify there lineup, get guys some mat time etc, and Iowa will certainly blow these teams out of the water, but there are a couple of intriguing individual matchups that present themselves.
First off Grand Canyon University- First time I'm aware of that they have come to IC Duals. They are new to D1 and get a lot of California recruits(hence my interest in them). They have a decent coaching staff which includes 2 time AA Brith Stith out of AZ state and Jon Sioredas an AA out of UTC.
125- The antelopes (yes they are the 'lopes, not a tough mascot) have a couple options, but likely go with Freshman William Olivas a 2 time AZ state champion. They have a sophomore out of CA Chavez and another freshman out of Oregon, Libolt. No matter who they throw out look for Gillman to win by fall.
133- Olivas' twin brother Juaquin looks to man the spot. Highly accomplished in HS with 3 state titles, he'll be another Lope on his back losing by fall the Cory Clark.
141- The Lopes have a couple options here with Jr Jesse Taylor out of CA (4 time state qualifier) Soph Uzo Owuama out of CA (5th at CA states) and FR Ralphy Tovar ( HS teammate of Taylor CA state champ and nationally ranked as a Senior). Tovar is certainly the best of the three (not sure how the coaching staff handles there redshirts) Should be a great way for L. Ryan to get a win under his belt. If Tovar goes, he'll give Ryan all he wants.
149- GCU likely goes with freshman Blake Monty ( AZ state champ, 3 time place winner) Not seeing much of a problem for Sorensen here.
157- GCU has two solid wrestlers at this weight and likely go with Senior Chayse Jackson (Oregon St Champ, solid Greco background) over freshman phenom Zack Velasquez CA state Champ (beat future Hawk Luke Troy in CA state semis) . It'll be interesting to see who the Hawks throw out there.
165- The lopes have a very talented RS FR in Bobby Reece (4 time WA state champ 149-2 in HS) as well as Jr Casey Larson out of WA. Multiple time st place, not much college success at this point. Look for Reence to get the start here. Reece and Rhodes could be a good one and we'll see if Paddock can make the weight.
174- GCU has several freshman here and one Sophmore 2 time AZ state champ, Trey Ronayne. shouldn't give whoever we throw out much problem.
184- Another weight with a couple talented guys. First, they have Cale Wilson ( 2X OK St Champ) Wilson wrestled for the Sooners his redshirt season. Wilsons a Soph. They also have 3X CO state placer Austin Trujillo. No problems for Sammy here.
197- The lopes best wrestler is probably 2 X CA placer Dan Chaid. He's better at freestyle and spent a year at the Olympic training center (Ala possible opponent Burak). He's another Oklahoma transfer. He picked up a win over Kyle Crutchmer of Okie St. He'll give Nathan Burak a go for sure.
Hwt- GCU has two options here. 2 time CA state placer Sean Medley a Junior and Sophmore Jacob Grantham ( WA St champ 3X placer). Pin city for Stoll.
