*****Iowa vs Utah St Game Thread*****

The shittiest thing about this loss was they didn't deserve to lose, at least the way they played defensively for the first 38.5 minutes.

Their shooting (and guys forcing shots even when they knew they didn't have it tonight), turnovers, and lack of rebounding after defending well was what ultimately did them in.

Utah state didn't look impressive to me. They're similar to Washington St---difference is Washington ST. missed a ton of open 3's and these guys didn't. I don't think UW or Utah St. are Sweet16 caliber teams. These are type of teams you might meet in 1st round in NCAA, but they (like Iowa) don't have the juice to go beyond that.
You read my mind....I felt like a was watching a 2nd or 3rd round NIT game.....

He should have said ok i am going to pass up this shot with a better one with a drive or drive and kick nope he just chucks very disapointing for a Senior
Isn’t he like a six year senior?

I guess Iowa is a women’s soccer and basketball team until Beth has to hire replacements for Fran and KF. Just lost to a Mountain West team on your “home court”. Embarrassing. Time for change.

If Iowa makes even a third of all those missed wide open perimeter looks and a third more of the missed FTs, they win this game by double-digits.

45-29 rebouding

Not Fran's philosophy...keep firing if you are Ogelsby or Sandfort. So far we've played two teams with pulse in Washington St. and Utah St and both Sandfort brothers didn't show up and Dix also absent, but apparently injured.

I appreciate the effort but we lost because Payton couldn't make baskets. I don't know how you can be a pure shooter and miss that many shots. Started the game with air ball. I suppose he didn't like the arena backdrop.
Yeah. Payton took 18 of Iowa's 64 shots and hit 4 of them with only 1 3 pointer. You can't win many games doing that.

Yes, I think it is because Fran is type of coach that tells him to keep chucking and Payton wants to be the team leader.

Payton is type of guy that can make the off balance 3 when he's is on a streak but when he's searching to get hot, he needs to be more selective on his 3pt shots and avoid the off-balance fading away or fading to the side type 3's. He was close on a lot of them...but they were shots he hunted and not easy HORSE game 3pt shots. Our best 3 ball shooters are supposed to be Sandfort Bros + Dix and they have been missing in action in these two games vs real competition---hard to win when those 3 guys are bricking.

A fast game doesn’t play well to his strengths. On the other hand I think Fran knows he needs him for physical BIG play. I remember last year watching Dembele battle Purdue’s big guys and he did a great job defensively.
When you have had as much success as Fran has in the NCAA tournament you can tinker with the lineups and be the smartest man in the room. Barf

Yep thats coaching 3s not going down no shame in that lets drive and kick i think pryce tried that a few times Payton was deer in the headlights

Luckily Francis has 2 timeouts to go along with his 2 hands sitting in his pockets while he is watching his team piss it down their legs. Sort of common sense, that most JH/HS level coaches know, is if the 3 isn't falling for a player(s) tell them to drive the ball and get to the line. Shoot some free throws and find their rhythm. Not Francis........ hands in his pockets watching his team sling 3's and (just like every year) not play any defense against a half assed team. Please let the next coach go ahead and take his place now.

when Fran was hired I was so excited to be able to watch a uptempo offense after watching the boring slow paced offense of Lick. Traded the mediocre results with the mindset that after 3 or so years he’d get this team into the top echelon of the B1G with his high scoring offense. with good players wanting to play in this exciting offense. Was I wrong, His kids don’t even want to play for him. Time for change. Beth has some tough decisions to make.

Players want to play for him they are just playing dumb and making bad decisions in live action

Just another lousy use of players and McCaffery incompetent coaching. The guy is just clueless in-game coaching. He stands on the sideline with his thumb up his a** watching Iowa get heir a** kicked game after game by any decent team.
I agree Brauns was playing well on both ends and they pulled him

Payton 1-12 was just plan not team ball and me time

Bad coaching.
To say the least.

Jess Settles, a million times every Hawk game he does, says that "Fran encourages his guys to just keep shooting, even when they are in a funk".

I get that you need to 'shoot yourself out of a funk' somewhat, but maybe try different ways to score and get confidence going, instead of just chucking the ball at the hoop - especially forced and ill-timed ones - and building the Great Wall with bricks.

Good players know when the shots aren't dropping how to make an impact other ways. Drawing fouls. Getting assists. Stepping it up on defense.

I'm going out on a limb here and guess that both Payton and Josh were not 100% and probably should not have played the minutes that they played. Nether one of them looked well and Fran should have played Traore and Thelwell more minutes. Brauns is not a player that is going to help Iowa in the long run and it's a shame that Mulvey can't see the floor, especially after redshirting him last year after playing minimal minutes in his first 2 years at Iowa. That's a big recruiting mistake by Fran for sure, as having only Owen as is his only big man that is productive at all on both ends.
I'm hoping that this team can come together, get healthy, and begin to shoot better together during the Christmas break.
Everyone had complained that Iowa doesn't play defense and loosing by just 8 after having such a terrible offensive game, maybe the worse game offensively that Iowa has had for a while, defense wasn't the reason Iowa lost this game.
Fran can't get on the court and shoot for the players and blaming Fran for this loss can only go so far, but playing players that are not healthy especially with their shooting hands doesn't bode will for his coaching during this game.
It was a game that was Iowa's to take and chucking up 3's that had no chance to go in from the start of the game, was not a strategy Iowa should have continued to pursue the whole game.
The rebounding discrepancy was the result of all the missed 3's and nothing more.
Something is not right with Dembele, he's another player that has got to give Iowa more then what he has given. He is not worthy of getting the starting power forward position at the present time. Fran needs to address this going forward as the 2 Big Ten games are just around the corner. RANT OVER!

Dembele had 3 rebounds and 3 assists in 10 minutes. He’s not great but nowhere near as bad as some of you claim. Traore can play more without ladji being bad.
