I read a great article on SI about how Iowa football made a decision in December before the Bowl Game to be honest with their players and tell them if they were guaranteed a spot on the 105 man roster. Some were told they were not going to make the cut, and others were told the likelihood of making the cut. Still, some of those players chose to stay and go through spring practice. Ferentz also made the decision to let the players make visits to other schools, and to make the trip to the bowl game and participate in pre bowl practices. He just didn't kick them to the curb. The article stated that Iowa is near the 105 man limit where most schools aren't. Says Ferentz did this to give his players an opportunity to find new homes early on where they could continue their playing career. Just thought I'd bring it up because if Ferentz is nothing else, he is honest and fair with his players. Good to know that there are still coaches with integrity left in the game.

Yeah I heard an interview on the radio the other day where he stated that. He also told one of his sons who coaches at the FCS to be ready to pick up all the guys who entered the portal that won’t find a new home.
Much respect for KF’s integrity!

I think a little context needs to be added... well a lot

The first thing is this effects walk-ons that don't play. The 106th person on your bench isn't playing. It's actually a bit sad as player #106 probably works his butt off as much or more as say player #50 (just picked a random number) just to have the honor of practicing. 106 does not play or travel.

There is, as I understand it, still up in the air a "grandfather rule" for these walk-ons to allow them to continue and not count towards the 105 cap! Of course new ones are not allowed without being added to the cap.

As I understand it...if the grandfather rule goes in those guys are safe...if it does not...well your 3rd string long snapper needs to find a new place to play

Imo the biggest effect of this rule (well law) will be finding finding random walk-ons who eventually end up contributing and even the NFL. On the flip side, it also allows schools to give more schollies.... obviously this is NIL reaction because the ability to give NIL made roster limits unlimited

So not sure what KF did here...did he tell his 3rd string long snapper to find another school? Did he tell some kids who would never see the field at the D1 level...were they would have to pay to go to also....to not get an Iowa education?

He contemplated the Michigan route. You know, making them "assistants", then giving each one a "glasses-nose-mustache" disguise to go on scouting trips to games of upcoming opponents.

KF genuinely cares about all of his players and always has. The players are not just a means to an end. I know many on this board do not like the way he goes about his coaching but is character and integrity are above reproach.
I respect KF and do believe he cares about the kids...I think...well... I think the actual actual article needs to be posted for context...is he telling schollie kids to get lost or walk-ons to find another school?

Well "the first thing " is your full of crap. We've had guys move along who most certainly were playing, ST at least. And not all the guys who portaled were walk ons. Pretty sure Hoffman got the talk as well, and he was a 4 star. 2nd like a Michigan man would have any idea what "integrity" is.... lololol

Kinda funny that you felt compelled to mansplain the situation to everyone, AND THEN ask for the article link (which was posted in this thread before your reply).

Kirk's biggest strength is his professionalism. Nobody is perfect, especially in this profession, but his integrity is hard to knock.
LOL ... well the race lawsuit would say something different. KF does a nice job of hiding, he created quite a fraud. Nation stays off his underperforming weak scheduling boring football can't beat anyone good tail.

Or neither of those options. Maybe he sets out a nice little breakdown of where each player is at their position, where that puts them in the grand scheme of things, and let's them make their own decision. No guarantees of a roster spot and if it comes to it some people will be "cut." This way it allows everyone to have a role in the process. No need to be black and white when nothing in life is.

So you are saying you had guys move on who were playing? Wow!!! That never happens...well besides multiple AP All Americans who left one school for another during the NIL era.

Oh...do you mean the kids who have left a school for another to get more playing time...well that has been going on since leather helmets...

Or so you mean the walk-on kids who get a taste, play a little.... special teams...maybe some mop up...and realize they can drop down a level and play a lot... Michigan has 1 or 2 of those a year...they are usually great stories...kid comes to Michigan for the education thinking he was either overlooked or playing on Saturday isn't the goal... it's usually at the end of their career when they leave...after they have an undergrad degree and go somewhere to get PT.

Guys hitting the portal who play isn't exactly news...you are insulting your own intelligence by suggesting it is

What is at real issue here is the kid who really has no chance to play...he is someone to be admired...he shows up at practice everyday with the hope of maybe getting a snap one day. 105 is close to a 5 deep...the NFL has half.

That's what sucks about it...these kids play for pride and not minutes. Trust me...KF is not telling a 3rd string CB to look at other options unless he is a cancer on the culture. Trust me, he is not telling schollie players to look elsewhere (even if they are 4th string) unless they are are a cancer...it's a really bad look except at certain positions...a schollie 4th string QB simply isn't going to ever play if they are already an upperclassmen

The kids hurt in this area walk-ons...who already chose Iowa over lower level football schools
