What is Iowa doing in the transfer portal?

Yes...here I am bringing up Michigan again...but I'm doing so because the things I heard/know probably apply to Iowa...

Michigan needs help in its WR room also. Michigan did a pretty wide search, this past portal, and fell short. I heard this directly from someone I know for a fact knows...he can tell you what our coaches ' farts smell like...not that you'd want that info ...but he can...

Michigan was a no, from the start, for a lot of WRs because of agents. It didn't matter what we said to the kids or parents...the agents pointed their heads elsewhere. And it's not because of bad blood or anything...this includes agents that pushed kids to Michigan at other positions.

What they told the kids and parents is that it didn't matter what they say about opening up the O...they haven't shown you'll get more than 3-5 targets per game even if you the #1 guy. Our message was we just hired a new OC and landed the #1 QB in the country...we will throw the ball. The message back was I'll believe it when I see it...of course it's a chicken and egg thing...how can we prove it without WRs? Agents told them not to come here...and they weren't anti-Michigan...in fact we were one of their first calls at other positions were the agents felt we maximize their clients' value.

Which comes to second thing I heard...as players came off the board (during the last portal) prices started to skyrocket. Basic supply and demand but on crack. I happen to know of a couple kids (not WRs) whose agents said would be ours if we meet the price. I don't have to like it (and I don't) but we now play the NIL game. Michigan does now. But it doesn't mean funds are unlimited and we will spend unwise. They were basically asking for 3-4 times the price of players we already have who are less proven as they are younger and without experience. Michigan wasn't the only school to balk at the price...both ended up at schools that didn't have even close to the history (prestige + development) they were leaving. But now they are likely among the highest paid on their teams despite being average players.

So back to Iowa and why I wrote this...

We might not like this (I don't) but agents are the rulers now. It's not like when your drunk uncle tries to cash in. These guys come in with presentations of why or why not a certain school is a "fit." And it has nothing to do with were a kid will be happy and grow. It is 100% about maximizing value in dollars short term. The lifelong investment part is 90% gone.

Point being....good luck finding a WR in the next portal...agents don't want them at your school and even the price for mediocre will be too high
I'd like to know more about this flatulence you speak of.

Gearing up for another crap load of players to be hopping into the portal in 2 weeks.
Hoping Kirk and the gang are ready to go and can snag a couple at need positions.

Per 247, all but one of the Top 200 that entered the portal in the first window are off the table.

Iowa signed #174 (DL/Hawthorne) and the only one still unsigned is #191 (QB/Georgia).

It takes 2 to tango. So even if there is a WR we throw a lot of $ at odds are some other big name school is too and we are still have some of the stink lingering from BF era and probably won’t get that kid. There is only so few QB spots open that gives Iowa a better shot after spots filled up but WR if they command big bucks they’ll want to go to a pass happy offense and get their targets. Easier said than done about going out adding high price talent at certain positions. Iowa needs to get mid major or FCS guy under the radar and hope they hit on something. Look at isu with Jayden Higgins came from E. Kentucky don’t think many people batted an eye when he signed and look at his stats last 2 years.

I think it was leistikow on radio said when talking about spring depth chart. Iowa actually has some depth at wr for once we just don’t have that go to guy. But least with Lester and gronowski passing game will continue making better progress.
Another injured qb who's questionable

So cuts will happen soon. You'd have to cut even more if wanted guys from the portal.
I'm guessing the plan at most schools is to run through spring practices before assessing final cuts and portal needs before going into summer. Hence the need for the May portal period to allow players to move.

I am sure there will be a handful of difficult convos during these two weeks ahead.

Boy, is that true. The head of our NIL speaks to this all the time. Agents are constantly calling him shopping players who haven't even put their names in the portal, trying to bid up the price and then playing one school against another. And many of them are charging outrageous percentages to boot. He won't play that game. But many schools will, and so it continues. You're right, for those agents, it's not at all about finding a good fit, but finding the program willing to pay the most money. And if it doesn't work out, the player will be shopped to another set of schools for the next year (with that agent grabbing another percentage). Structure is needed, at all levels. Contracts are signed. Penalties are enforced if those contracts are breached. Agents percentages are capped, and their role is limited once a deal is signed. These are just a few of the items that need to be addressed. I don't know what the form of the new system will be, but it can't be fixed by nibbling around the edges. And longing for the "old days" is just a waste of time.

Supposedly, Iowa is in the Top 25 for NIL in football, and yet according to the spring depth chart the current starting receivers our $1 million dollar quarterback will have to throw to are RVZ, Jacob Gill, and Seth Anderson.

Is this a joke?

Does Iowa plan to be busy during the April portal window, or is Captain Kirk getting absolutely zero upgrades at wide receiver for 2025? I also see the secondary has zero new additions in personnel. Just the same names who were getting torched all of last season sans Quinn Schulte.

If Iowa doesn’t get some serious upgrades at wide receiver and in the secondary, they’re going to have a final record in 2025 that will make Scott Frost blush.
A couple of thoughts that come from conversations at the coach's clinic....

From a portal standpoint, Iowa is looking to add a S, CB, DL and LT.

Unless a player ridiculously proven and valuable like Gronowski, look for Iowa to focus on players with multiple years of eligibility. It's difficult and rare for a younger player to come in and have a positive impact year 1 at Iowa.

Per Tyler Barnes, if a player talks money early, he is taken off the board. Irrespective. They are steadfastly committed to finding the right guys who fit their model.

As a final note, I would like to see a QB (Gronowski) who can actually get the ball out on time before I downgrade the WR corps. It's year two for that group, and Lester has done his work to really build up the QB room.

Patience is never easy, but almost always necessary.

The MAC teams better watch out. He we come! Coming for your best guys.

If you are playing with an enormous sum of other peoples' money it is an easy game to play.

I like Etringer in what I can recall. I don’t remember being impressed with either Hall or Lee. X has made way too many mistakes for how much field time he’s gotten. Hopefully the light bulb comes on for all of them but the secondary is my biggest concern for the second year in a row.

I do think the pass rush will improve. Llewellyn in particular has a lot of juice off the edge. Hurkett was solid but unspectacular last year. I would love to see Allen and Llewellyn getting the primary snaps but Hurkett will probably get a lot of 1 and 2 down snaps as he’s reliable against the run.
It would be nice if Phil would blitz more than once a season. That could help the old pass rush quite a bit, not to mention taking some pressure off the DBs. Other teams blitz to great success. Phil needs to make the adjustment. He's already late, IMHO.

I don’t think Gronowski is a question mark at all. He will be ready in June, plenty of time with his experience.
Leistikow reiterated same on radio said last week and that his procedure was literally a 15-20 minute one. Yes sucks he had an injury but staff was well aware prior to signing and he played through injury up until their loss in the semis. That and he’s ahead of schedule rehab wise.

The game that confounded was Michigan State. Even if we had the guys in that were out on D, I don't think we come close to winning that one.
