IMHO, of course.
Losing is one thing. Showing no signs of life whatsoever is a whole different animal, and a team that no longer cares has no business anywhere near the NIT, let alone the NCAA.
Right now, today, based on the eye test, Nebraska and Iowa are clearly the two worst teams in the Big Ten. It seems fitting they will break that tie against one another in Lincoln on Sunday.
Rutgers, Penn State, and Illinois got off to terrible starts, as usual, but I've watched those teams play off and on all season, and never once did those teams look like they had checked out, that they had quit. And look at them now.
Iowa, on the other hand, keeps getting blown out by everyone and anyone without showing a shred of effort, energy, or pride. The exceptions are former walk-on Nicholas Baer, who has never given anything but his absolute best effort since he first donned a Hawkeye jersey, and Muscatine's Joe Weiskamp. Meanwhile, his teammates, fellas the coaching staff gave scholarships to, haven't even been going through the motions. They would be an embarrassment to a Saturday morning league at the Y.
I've never been a big fan of Fran's, and I thought it would have been good to have fired him after last season. But until a few weeks ago I figured he might get this thing back on track after all. Well, this dive into the abyss--the Dolphin thing, Fran's suspension, the team's utter failure down the stretch--provide more than enough evidence that Iowa basketball needs a whole new vision.
I don't care what it costs. Money has never been much of a problem in Iowa City. But Barta, Fran, and that entire staff needs to be fired. After nine years, there are no more excuses. This nightmare needs to end. But it probably won't, so now Iowa fans are back to the stage of Lickliter apathy. I know I'm done with this program.
Let's go DRAKE!
