I love the parade. Always have. Last night's parade was excellent. Here are a few of my random thoughts.
1. City High has a wheelchair bound student in their marching band. What a wonderful change in our society from when I was a kid. The handicapped kids were not encouraged to participate in activities, and were in separate classes when I was in school. There was another student pushing the wheelchair bound student, and I hope they truly appreciate the honor of assisting their fellow student achieve a dream.
2. The Bernie Sanders float was awesome with it's conga drum crew. Probably the best of the politically themed floats, though Rand Paul's gang of unicycle riders was interesting.
3. I wish I'd seen the Chinese Dance Team in action. They were just walking when they passed my vantage point.
4. Some of you HROT's would have been shocked. There must have been four Chinese student themed groups in the parade, I saw at least two Muslim women in scarves, and the entry from El Cactus featured a young girl in traditional Mexican garb carrying the Mexican flag. I assume one of you right wingers would have yelled at them to go home!
5. The alumni band was it's usual fantastic self.

I had the same thought with #3. I wanted to see some dancing. The Dream Center brought it, but not the Chinese. You no like dance in street?

Seriously, can the Chinese dance, or is it more like fast Tai Chi?
And, no Bruce Harreld. I thought that was odd. He was in town, so why not appear in the parade?

Many years ago this parade had lots of floats, high school bands from all around the area, Shriners with all kinds of cool vehicles, and people on horseback to end the parade. Now it consists of mostly politicians and an incredible amount of student organizations. It's still fun but it is a shadow of what it used to be.

Not to sound terribly fogeyish, but my years at Iowa ('99-'03) were the golden years. It helped that Iowa Football was on a meteoric rise. The parade the year we beat Michigan for Homecoming in '03 was my favorite.

Like a vail over head and neck? That's a hijab. If it covers everything but their eyes its a Jihab.

Props to the City High trumpet player with the handlebar mustache. Young man doesn't have much to work with, but, he pulled it off. The kind of thing a high schooler can do. In college and he's a doofus. High school and he has flair.
