Iowa-Illinois lineups

Why is he waiting until the end to hit those shots? He’s more athletic than anyone at this weight not named Gable, Kerk, or Hendrickson?
This. I get taking good shots but he should trust himself to win a scramble. As you said he’s more athletic than most heavyweights. I still believe in Ben but it was a head scratcher tonight. Damn.

That’s exactly who he’s been all year. He’s just not there yet and that’s okay. I think he’s a way better freestyler than folkstyle. The size is more a factor in folk. Doesn’t look strong enough to grind through folkstyle scrambles against much bigger guys right now.

No reason to panic or anything. Just needs more time to develop before he’s ready to compete for titles. He’s already good enough to AA with a good tournament.

Kueter was able to get in with ease, he needs to fire more shots and trust his offense. His athleticism is already superior to almost everyone else at the weight. He got out-savvyed there.

He gets too deep for his size, they just flop down on him and grind him. I'd rather see an outside type single where he doesn't get continually trapped underneath. He has the speed to pull that off at will.

If he keeps screwing around with football on the side then unfortunately that's time he doesn't have.

This very well could be the only season we get where he wrestles exclusively. Unless he makes the tough decision, of course.

Agree, I have noticed multiple times this year when he gets in on a shot he gets flattened to the mat or loses his grip on the leg. Next level grip strength can help make up for the size difference but it doesn't appear he has that.

I worry about this too. Easy to see he has the raw talent to be a stud, just needs more development and experience. Same is probably true for football. May have to pick one to reach full potential. I guess risks and rewards either way, tough decisions.

I was thinking tonight that a well-honed ankle pick would serve Ben really well. He's got the build and athleticism to make it very effective for him. Pardon the blasphemy, but study the Cael tapes on it. Neutralize the weight disadvantage a bit with his speed and length.

I thought the same , getting some confidence now too. Doesn't look like the same guy as a few months ago.
He would be pretty legit if he had alittle more horsepower. If he gets in the weight room in the off season, maybe we won’t need a transfer to give Deluca a redshirt.

He’s not a quick finisher. When he was smaller, it wasn’t as big a deal because he had the length and strength to finish through extended positions. Now, he gets punished for that. Imagine Matt McDonough trying to finish a single leg on a 174.

When you watch the good heavies, everything is quick and clean. They don’t get stuck underneath guys. Ben has to learn to use his athleticism to find angles. Like Ryder, he’s very straight on. Style-wise, he would be much better at 197.

He is very limited offensively. I don't think he can even beat out Kael V or Estrada.
Estrada should have been out 141 this year. He’s wrestling 157 at 149, looks tiny, but is strong enough to beat bigger average wrestlers. Looked small against the North Carolina dude at the SS, who moved up from 141. He’s muscular, but he has some fat over those muscles. Up until now, he was successful not cutting weight, but it would have been nice for the team this year. He could be 149 starter next year, but if we land Bo, who know were he’ll have a spot.

I put majority of the blame on Illinois because they seemed content to do next to nothing last night, but that dual was dreadful from an offensive standpoint.

I believe there was one takedown at 133, 141, 157, 174, 184, and zero takedowns at 149 and HWT. 7 of 10 matches with one or zero takedowns.

The kid at 149 should have been stalled out of the match. Instead, he didn’t get his 1st stall call until late in the 3rd.

Bo is only a junior. Could still grow. Need 49 for next year. 41 is probably a reach for Estrada, much like Block this year.

So next year we will have to bring one in, or hope Peterson can grow into it in the off season and be effective

I think the only 41 we will have is Otto Black if he joins the team. Jace Rhodes looks like he is gonna out grow 41 also. Yes a transfer will probably be needed.
