Iowa-Illinois lineups

Estrada should have been out 141 this year. He’s wrestling 157 at 149, looks tiny, but is strong enough to beat bigger average wrestlers. Looked small against the North Carolina dude at the SS, who moved up from 141. He’s muscular, but he has some fat over those muscles. Up until now, he was successful not cutting weight, but it would have been nice for the team this year. He could be 149 starter next year, but if we land Bo, who know were he’ll have a spot.

It isn’t so easy to just plug and play. He’d have issues with the quickness of 141 pounders. Probably wouldn’t have results much different than Block.

So next year we will have to bring one in, or hope Peterson can grow into it in the off season and be effective

Peterson should never be counted on to start at Iowa. We have to be better than that.

He’s not a quick finisher. When he was smaller, it wasn’t as big a deal because he had the length and strength to finish through extended positions. Now, he gets punished for that. Imagine Matt McDonough trying to finish a single leg on a 174.

When you watch the good heavies, everything is quick and clean. They don’t get stuck underneath guys. Ben has to learn to use his athleticism to find angles. Like Ryder, he’s very straight on. Style-wise, he would be much better at 197.
i heard matt mcdonogh could benchpress 225 for 25 reps and run a 4.4 40 though

I was thinking tonight that a well-honed ankle pick would serve Ben really well. He's got the build and athleticism to make it very effective for him. Pardon the blasphemy, but study the Cael tapes on it. Neutralize the weight disadvantage a bit with his speed and length.

One can go more recent with Kyle Snyder. Had kind of a ho hum freshman year; lost to a few guys that were surprising. Didn't put out much offense. Got to the finals but got pinned. Go forward a few months and he wins trials than worlds largely on his ankle picks or low singles. Never looked back. Ben just has to start hitting at angles so he's not carrying the full weight of a straight on shot...this is what wears him down. Put effort into getting the first period takedown and guys will have to start shooting in on him which is his wheelhouse right now.

He would be pretty legit if he had alittle more horsepower. If he gets in the weight room in the off season, maybe we won’t need a transfer to give Deluca a redshirt.
That's what he should have done last off season. Came back smaller than what he should have in my opinion

Needs to study and learn from Kyle Snyder. I've never seen anyone better at understanding leverage and angles on bigger opponents. Different body types and levels if horsepower but the principle is the same.

We need to get the PSU weight room plan, their guys have zero trouble bulking to whatever weight they need to be at.

I think the only 41 we will have is Otto Black if he joins the team. Jace Rhodes looks like he is gonna out grow 41 also. Yes a transfer will probably be needed.
Rhodes just went up to 141 this year. He doesn't look even close to a 149 to me. But yes we better find some people because right now 125 and 141 are not AA level let alone the high AA level we need. Undersized true freshman Duluca probably is not going to save 125 next year, 141 still a problem, 149 we have a couple options and I like Estrada but a jump needed to be Parco level, 152 joins the no AA level party along with a lot more questions at 197.

I wonder what that plan is? PSU seems to be the only team notably pulling it off. There were conversations before the season started about the difficulty of putting weight on efficiently. Kem Dawg effectively did it. Off the top of my head, can’t think of another.

I was thinking the same thing. They were about the same weight. probably had alittle more HP, but in an interview asking him how he finishes on full size heavy weights, he said he puts pressure against a joint in a way it’s not supposed to bend, almost subtle BJJ, so they go down or there joint blows. The secret is studying how he did it without getting stopped by the ref. Doing it quickly is very important I’m sure.

Agree about Peterson, I was just talking worst case. Hopefully we find good transfer. What a difference landing Alirez would have made.

Someone posted that Estradas ha coach thought he could make 141. And I find that interesting
I don't think he can make 141 anymore, he's got way too much muscle.

he'll be 149 or 157 next year, I guess it depends how the lineup plays out next year.

That was a great win for Miko last night, a dream come true for him. He's wanted to be a Hawkeye ever since he was a little boy. Joey Cruz was also on his club team and they trained together when they we little but Joey was older then Miko by a couple years or so he took his lumps.

He's got a great attitude and loves being in Iowa. All he wants to do is get better

Estrada doesn't cut weight? He's a tank. Built like a brick shithouse. No way he walks around in the 140s.
