Iowa-Indiana Play by play

At this point, it's delusional to think this team could win a NC.

Exactly right, because no team that beats Indiana 45-0 has any business winning Nationals. This meet was an absolute disgrace by any measure. Seriously, let's take a look: Gilman fails to tech fall #19 (almost in the 20's, mind you) Oliver, Clark has the audacity to accept a forfeit, Grothus should know better than cutting the match short and really should have used the full 7:00 to knock off more rust, Sorensen conceded an escape for crying out loud, Cooper came up way short of the fall, Rhoads, see Cooper, Meyer wasn't even remotely close to even a major over a guy who's not even ranked in the top 10, Brooks, see Cooper, Burak, see Brooks, and Stoll, see Grothus.

I'm sick and tired of watching these guys shut out opponents in dual meets. The only conclusion I can draw from this debacle is that they have no business even making the trip to NYC. Really, if they're going to attend Nationals, I want to see a team with a pulse. I donate annually to the HWC and this is the kind of product they put on the mat?! I've had it with Iowa wrestling. If we can't beat an IU team 60-0, I want no part of what they call "Iowa wrestling" these days.

Calm down man, it's Indiana. We all love the Hawks, we just want more...Imagine that!!!

BG is 2-2 JV matches, 1-1 in Varsity. Big Tens will show everyone he's ready for NY! I predict finals at Bigs! Go Brody, you can do it!

He's actually 2-1 in varsity competition, with a 6-0 win over #17 Sabatello and a fall over an unranked IU opponent. One loss against #7 Thorn in a very close match. Two pretty decent varsity wins, and very close to an impressive 3-0. And the Grothus train is just getting started.

I will make a prediction that from the pre-quarters on at Nationals he will not win a match after giving up three TD's before taking a shot. Just saying'.
Are you even an Iowa Fan? Meyers has beat most of the top guys in this weight. He is what he is. He is hard nosed, can ride hard, and can go for 3 periods. That can take you a long ways at NCAAs.

Some comparative results:

PSU 34 Indiana 8

125 Gilman by Mdec 12-4
Megaludis by dec 6-2

141 Gulibon mdec 11-3
Grothus by fall

174 Nickal lost by dec 7-6
Meyer by dec 8-7

I think we're doing just fine.

Also, Sorensen may not be the bonus point machine Retherford is, but he is a consistent winner, usually never in danger of losing even if the score is close. Kind of like St. John, he wasn't a big bonus point guy but he was an elite, consistent winner. I can't wait until the two match up at B1G's. This team has the ability to make it 36 B1G titles, and 24 NCAA titles, but they have to come ready to wrestle in the post-season, I like the mentality of this years team.

Early in the season we all thought a top-4 finish was possible. Now AA looks like a 50/50 proposition - which really hurts our chances.

I'm an Iowa fan. But I am not happy with the development of our guys, and I'm not happy that every year we go to Nationals without a realistic chance of winning.

I don't know how Meyer or team will finish, but he is 19-2, and though he's had some lackluster matches, he's really only had 1 horrible match (Walters at Midlands).

I'm certainly not predicting an Iowa National Team Title, and to do so we'll definitely have to wrestle MUCH better than we have for several years to be sure. That said, FAR stranger things have happened. Until the scoreboard in NYC says we're mathematically eliminated, I'll keep believing we've got a shot, which we absolutely do at this writing.

Just because we thought Alex was top 4 guy at the beginning of the season doesn't make it a reality. In all fairness, he was ranked way too high. Also, there has been a very nice improvement with Stollhouse, Burak, Gilman and Cooper from last year. So in reality our guys are in fact showing improvement.

Meyer just beat the #11-ranked guy who owns a win over the immortal Bo Nickal. Let that sink in a little. Folks are going to have to accept the fact that Meyer isn't a flashy wrestler. If matches lasted 3:00, he'd probably be unranked. Fortunate for him, there three periods. He grinds down his opponents, much like a number of guys have for the Hawks since the 70's, on their way to national championships. Darryl Weber comes to mind as a tough kid who could grind out wins. He managed to win a national championship that way despite not necessarily being the most naturally gifted guy in his weight class.

Not happy with development? Let's see. . . .

Gilman -- way better than when he started; not even close.

Clark -- bigger, stronger, and at least as good as when he started.

Grothus -- hard to tell, given the weight cut, the rust, and the injuries, but he looks to be gaining momentum.

Sorensen -- offense a little limited, but the kid's undefeated as a sophomore; hard to argue too much with that.

Cooper -- I'd say he's markedly better than last fall, actually. Still has some head-scratcher moments, but he looks better to me.

Rhoads -- a grinder who gives great effort; hard to comment much here.

Meyer -- first year in the lineup and he's ranked top 10 and will probably be the #1 seed at Big Tens.

Brooks -- definitely better, and healthy this year for a change; I still see him as a threat for high AA honors.

Burak -- infinitely better and stronger than when he started.

Stoll -- looking like a solid AA with a puncher's chance at high AA as a freshman, coming off a less-than-stellar RS year.

Actually taking an objective look and breaking down each weight, I see some pretty darn good development here. The problem at Iowa isn't development. It's landing the blue-chippers -- something that's turning around with commitments from the likes of Marinelli, Young, Mejia, Happel, and Renteria, and with a guy like Kemerer already in the mix as a freshman, not to mention upcoming commitments from Berge and Lee. (alright -- just having some fun there, but ya gotta dream)

Also, let's not forget that Iowa has won a number of team titles after coming into Nationals as an underdog. Shoot -- in 1997, when they set the scoring record of 170, I don't even think they were the favorite. I think Okie State was. Let that little nugget simmer a little.

The fact is that Iowa has underperformed at Nationals for several years now. Lots of factors at play, including injury, but mainly due to just flat-out laying an egg. This group seems focused and hungry to me -- something I really haven't seen much since Metcalf's last year. I like the leadership on this team. I don't expect this bunch to lay an egg in MSG. I think they'll bring it big-time, and I think any team that beats them will have wrestled one heck of a tournament to accomplish that.

I think the problem is both recruiting and developing. Probably the sting of last year's Senior class is still in my head. And with Cael sitting in the middle of what is currently the hotbed of HS wrestling, accumulating recruits like Jabba the Hutt, the future looks really dim to me.

It takes a special kind of fan to complain after beating a team by 20 points worse than PSU did. And to complain about Meyer beating a kid that beat Bo Nickal.

And when I say special I don't mean it in a good way.

If you can't enjoy and appreciate this team you have some issues. We may not win Big Tens or NCAAs but we are having a great season and guys have overall been way more aggressive that in the past few years. We are progressing towards where we need to be. And I honestly think we can beat PSU head to head in 9 of the 10 weights. So I am not really sure how we can't beat them in March.

Brody looked confident and looked ready to roll!
I think the rust is wearing off and the WD 40 is doing it's thing. Game On!
Meyer is Meyer I guess
Sorenson is boring
Burak is turning it on late in the season. Never seen him this offensive.
I think we get a win at NCAAs with Rhodes.

Love the effort tonight. To be fair about 74...Nickel lost that match when he tried to throw. I believe he win 9 out of 10x vs Jackson. The semis at 74 are going to be interesting. Meyer/Jackson and Nickel/Brunson?

Watching Meyer last night reminded me of Borschel's comeback at NCAA several years back in..... I think quarterfinals against WV??

Anyways..........

Meyer has a 6 pack of comebacks like that a year. That's just Meyer. Thrill a minute.

Down, down, down.............UP, UP, UP...........YES!!!

Some people like roller coaster rides......others don't. I used to jump out of perfectly good airplanes........now I prefer a good pair of walking shoes on Terra Firma.

Ahh, yes. . . . Borschel's semifinal win over Henrich of VA. One of the great comebacks of all time.

If you're curious, you can check it out here. Just ignore the Dennis-Ness match up above or risk vomiting your breakfast.

Why do you guys keep comparing this result with PSU. Penn State wrestled them on the road in the second part of a 2 match road trip while Iowa wrestled them at home on senior night. Big difference.

Who are these "Penn State faithful" of whom you speak? All I see on this board are Iowa fans, along with a few reasonable visitors.

Why can't you guys have a thread without mentioning, comparing, criticizing Penn State? I honestly don't come over to argue or even post, just to read, however when I see almost as much PSU talk here as I do on BlueWhite, it's hard not to get sucked in.

Stay Classy? You're a pretty well known troll. It's people like you, Lemon Pie, Tbar, etc that have killed other boards spewing your nonstop drivel. If only we could get so lucky and you would actually stay out of here. But we both know that's not going to happen.

My apologies for my fellow hawk fans. The Hawks aren't even close to the PSU wrestlers and they are grasping to find ways to put the Hawks on the same level as Carl and the fun boys. We really would like to experience the dynasty that is Pennsylvania State wrestling sometime in our lifetime. We are also very jealous watching a team revolutionize wrestling and do things that haven't been done in 6 million years of wrestling. I really do appreciate penn state fans coming to an Iowa board and educating us on wrestling and the greatness that is penn state. Thank you to you and your brethren for sharing your vast wrestling knowledge and again my apologies for Iowa fans discussing Iowa wrestling on an Iowa board.
