Iowa LB Nicholas Wilson - DUI, Driving under Suspended License

It's not a great sign. They can invite 105 to camp (I think). If you aren't among that group, that does not bode all that well for your future.

It typically doesn't bode well - but, as others have noted, coming out of bowl prep he was receiving some positive reviews from more experienced guys on the roster.

The problem for Wilson is that he mainly was pegged as a back-up OLB (the LEO). Right now, our top 2 OLBs are automatically going to be Ben Niemann and Bo Bower. Consequently, the new LB recruits would receive preference as it relates to being on the fall-camp roster. It just so happens that we already had 5 more experienced guys who would be guaranteed to be in camp (Ben Niemann, Bo Bower, Josey Jewell, Aaron Mends, and Jack Hockaday). Then, in addition to those guys, we have the TR FR LBs (Jones, Taylor, Wade, Welch, and N. Niemann). Thus, that is already 10 LBs in camp! Any other guy would have to be at a position that lacked depth ... and we essentially have little to no depth backing up Jewell. That presumably landed Garbutt one of the 105 spots.

Thus, from a numbers perspective alone, it likely didn't make sense to have any or many more LBs than those guys.

However, if the what an earlier poster claimed is true about grades ... then that could be another contributing reason why he didn't lock down one of the 105 spots.

To everyone who went about trying to rip my head off, first off I did not admit drinking and driving, that's what Ubers for. But The majority of the nation has drank a beer or a few and drove. Like one poster mentioned, it does not take much at all to get above the .08. What I am trying to point out is that the majority of people want to crucify this KID. Life is 10 percent of what happens to you and 90 percent of how you react to it. This could turn out to be one of the best lessons of his life. As far as the poster who said it will affect your career; if it was a one time offense and you show that you are better from it, it will not have much bearing at all unless you are applying to mothers against drunk driving. There is an egregious amount of professionals in the workplace who have had this lapse in judgement and gotten caught, unless it is an ongoing thing or you have a record, they will 99% of the time work with you. And to the poster who questioned whether I think it is a serious offense; of course I do, and because of mothers against drunk driving the penalties for even someones first are serious.

You probably don't go from being mentioned on the depth chart to not being invited as 1 of the 105 to camp without something amiss with your life.

The only reason why he was on the depth chart in the spring was because Ben Niemann was out with injury. That is not to say that there isn't something wrong possibly up with Mr. Wilson ... clearly, he's not a happy camper, or else he'd have self-policed himself a little more vigilantly. When you have something to lose ... you tend to take care of it a little better.

Fortunately, the coaches don't give up on players - they give them plenty of opportunities to turn things around. Let us not forget that the good Mr. Angerer didn't always make the best decisions in his youth ... and yet the coaches stuck with him and let him turn his ship around. I'm sure that the coaches will afford Wilson the same opportunity ... and I hope that the young man is wise enough to take advantage of it.

I agree he needs help, but if his first two offenses were at the sisters of the poor it still is his 3rd offense. If he's driving on the same road with your family or friends I think you'd agree. It will be interesting to watch the Nebraska legal system address this. I wonder how soon Nebraska puts him in a university car again.

My point is that it wasn't his third at Nebraska, because someone said something akin to why Nebraska didn't let him go after the last. But I don't think he should drive again. Ever. Lost that privilege. Uber for him

IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa football student-athlete Nick Wilson was cited by Iowa City law enforcement officials Saturday evening in Iowa City.

Wilson is a redshirt freshman and a native of Granger, Iowa. He attended West Des Moines Dowling High School and redshirted in 2015. Wilson is not among the 105 team members taking part in preseason camp prior to the start of fall semester classes.

UI athletics department officials are in the process of gathering facts in regards to the incident. Wilson is subject to established university protocol in regards to the UI student life code of conduct and team rules and regulations set for members of the football program.

Not being invited to camp, ouch. That has got to hurt. How players do we even have that miss camp?? Probably Less than a dozen on any given year. And probably only 0-2 scholarship players that are not injured.

I do not know the rules on attending camp, but I would assume you cannot be anywhere near the team or coaches, if not invited. Otherwise you would be considered "at camp" and breaking the rules. Where do they even train, 24 Hour Fitness? That has got to hurt...

This will go one of two ways, he learns his lesson and doubles down on his training (even if at Golds Gym), or the kid falls thru the cracks. Hopefully it is the former.

Yes, S___ happens. And to plenty of people. Not just Angerer, and let's not forget the coaches kid, James Ferentz(twice), there are plenty of others. The key is taking your misfortune and turning things around to head in the right direction. Hopefully young Mr Wilson does just that.

Exactly. There is a lot of high-horsing going on in this thread.

What did you expect from hawkeye report? Bunch of tough guys sitting behind their anonymous keyboards, making six figures, holier than thou.

Yes, dui is a serious offense, and he will be punished. His life, however, certainly should not be ruined because of it.

In a day of age where Uber is a couple taps on a phone away, living in a college town where you can walk basically anywhere, and there are still cabbies by the clubs, it's a friggin stupid decision. I'd have gone with a 6-game suspension but I'm glad he's not on the team anymore. When drunk driving costs the US 10,000 lives and $132 billion a year, it's stupid to think people want to defend the guy.

I'm not picking on Angerer ... he's just a great example AND he also happened to be at LB too.

However, as others have suggested, apparently there were other issues with Wilson because he's now gone.

Are you stupid or just trying to be a troll... It's a serious offense. A good number of employers would let someone go for that offense. By making it seem like a non-nonchalant offense, you are essentially saying it's okay and ignoring the thousands that die from drunk drivers every year.
True, but not where my wife works. They have 2 employees right now going through this. One doesn't have a license nor insurance on the car she drives to work about 40 miles one way, she's here on a green card, recently skipped a mandated UA test, and her boss knows about it all and is ok with it(not sure how many duis she has had). The other is wearing an ankle bracelet I think after her 2nd dui. Both are securely employed. I'm amazed by some of the stories she tells me about that place.

So your wife works for the Nebraska football program?
