So if Clemson wins out and if Iowa wins ..I'm not seeing any reason Iowa shouldn't be ranked second. The other playoff teams will all have 2 losses if Clemson wins.

Am I right or am I missing something here?

Maybe it's possible. I also think it's possible if MSU wins out, Clemson loses the 1st game and we win. Our only loss would be to the NC.

Don't they usually rank the two teams that made the national championship game 1 and 2? I could be wrong, but it was my impression that this had been done since the advent of the BCS. Don't get me wrong -- would love to see the Hawks finish at #2 -- right behind MSU. Then, Hawk fans will get to lament into perpetuity that $#@% interception in the end zone in the B1G championship game. . . .

Maybe, but it wouldn't make sense if the team that lost had 2 losses and Iowa only had 1. Especially if that team gets beat soundly. I'm not sure about this though.

IMO the top-4 should remain the top-4 at the end of the playoffs. It doesn't make sense to select who you believe to be the top-4 teams, then set it up so that three of them have to lose a game and therefore drop in the rankings. If they're the top four after 13 games, then they're the top four. The playoffs should just decided what order they're in.

I don't think the CFP rankings put out another poll after the bowl games. Just the AP and Coaches.....though perhaps I'm wrong?

Either way, I think #3 is the highest we could finish, which is still the second-highest finish in the rankings in school history.

TCU finished 3rd in the final AP last year without being in the playoffs. Oregon finished 2nd but I'm not sure that has to be the case.

The final CFP poll is the 12/6 rankings. The CFP does not rank after bowls/playoffs, but the AP and coaches will rank after the bowls/playoffs.

Serious question: Does it really matter?

Before it was mentioned above, I had no idea Oregon finished second last year, and TCU third.

Nor did I care.

I bet their recruits know.

That said, there is no final CFP, and the other polls aren't so kind to Iowa, so no, I don't think there's a path to #2.

If Clemson plays in the championship game, they will not be ranked lower than #2 with only 1 loss.
Iowa's best chance for #2 is for Oklahoma to beat Clemson soundly and then lose to MSU.
At that point, Iowa could easily jump a 2 loss Oklahoma and a Clemson team that didn't make the finals.
The only Group of 5 1 loss teams would be:
MSU
Clemson
Iowa
OSU

With the only loss being to the national champ, its a chance, but big thing is for Big 10 Victories.

We Are gonna beat Stanford so bad the committee will have no choice but to rank us over MSU, who will beat OU in the title game. We will be ranked #1 after all said and done.

I get what you are saying but one of the facts that Iowa likes to trumpet the most is all of our top 10 finishes under Kirk (2002, 2003, 2004, 2009). It would be great if we could add another year to the list. Depending on what happens, we may finish top 10 even with a loss as long as it's a game like MSU where we clearly showed we belonged even if we came up short.
