Iowa Spring Football Depth Charts (Deacon QB2; Marco QB3) + KF Press Conference

Could you imagine, albeit really difficult, Deacon having a 1st team All B1G season?

Just imagine Deacon becoming a serviceable Big Ten quarterback. As things stand he likely becomes the next man in behind Cade. If we bring in someone else in the portal so much the better. But we have to get the quarterbacks we have fully integrated into the new system.

I did a search of message boards at Utah State and Central Michigan. If the fans are to be believed, it sounds like the two QB’s who transferred out, Petras and Labas, have had impressive springs and are expected to be QB1 to start fall practice.

Labas tossed three 3 TD’s in Central Michigan’s spring game. Petras appears to be ahead of Copper Legas, who looked decent against Iowa last year.

Well sure...then again, Hill set the bar so low it wouldn't take alot to say he improved alot.
I’m a glass half full guy, but for me to even think “That is a Division I, II, or III quarterback” would be a significant improvement.

I still find it troubling in that mic'd up video that Lester is harping about footwork.

My gosh, there's so many things he has to fix and he has to fix our QBs' footwork? 3 of our 4 QBs are in at least their 2nd year. Why didn't Brian fix this last season? ;)

I must of not seen the same QB you watched last year. No side vision, fumbled a ton and most of the time missed wide open receivers. He could play for the Dallas Cowboys and still not complete 50% of his passes and still would have 4 turn overs per game. What does that say about his back ups?

He had no real foot “work” last season. Deacon’s feet were cemented to the turf.

At QB at the end of the day it only matters what we see on the field in the fall. The reports of Labas and Petras looking good this spring only confirms the total neglect of the offense over the last few years as Kirk moved Brian from his natural niche of coaching the o line to position him for succeeding him. We can't do anything now except fix it. And this spring that means working with a flawed Hill and a young wet behind the ears QB in Lainez to develop some depth. It may not look pretty but embrace the change.

I will believe Labas when I see it.

We knew what we had with Spencer. He was streaky. He sure as hell would have been better than Deac out there last fall if he could have played.

That is pretty much how I see it. I think honestly we will see improvement in the offense for several years to come. New OC is working with what he has right now and as the young guys are around longer (if they stay) and he brings in more of his own choosing, we will see the QB position steadily improve for a few years anyway. That alone should help with wr recruiting. Plus I think Tim understands that until this point KF has won a lot of games with nothing more then defense, ball and top control. It has worked. But we have to have the ability to strike fast as well and that has been absent. We still need to keep turn overs low and not do things to beat ourselves, but we also need to be able to drive down the field in under 2 min and score if need be. Or chew clock and drive down the field if need be. So I am just in wait and see mode, with a pretty good feeling that in about year 3 of Lester, we should really be clicking in all 3 phases. That being able to drive the field fast is what involves plays that burn a defense for being to aggressive and like I said that part has been absent.

and one of the reasons KF played Deacon was because of his so called ball security

We have never really been known for offense. That side of the ball is like a neglected rice paddy. We have not cared for it. We have let weeds infiltrate and rodents cause damage. It still produced rice but as time goes on there is less of it and the quality slowly diminishes.

It’s not easy to quickly transform the rice paddy.

A new OC can only do so much. We need much better talent. We need to adopt a more aggressive mindset. We have to be dominant blockers again. We need more dynamic skill players, especially QB. KF neglected the offense for too long and while I am hopeful, I am not optimistic.

Oh we have talent. We will probably never see an Iowa qb run the ball 20 times a game. We will probably never see them gain more then 5-7 yards at a time. BUT we do not need them to. Yeah we need them to take the easy 5 yards when it is there though. Last year Copeland (I think) said Wetjen might be the fastest player on the team. Cooper was on the team last year too ya know. Brown is a high rated WR that if nothing else sounds like he feels it is time to step up. We are not looking to be a shootout team, we are looking to be able to score 25-28 points a game and be able to do it against pretty much elite defense's. (Michigan scored 26 on us and PSU 31. If we could have put up 21 in either of those games, it completely changes the dynamics of the game.) So no, we do not need an Oregon style offense who puts up 60 points every week (we will see how that works out for them here pretty soon lol) or a full tilt most talented qb in the B10, We do need a better line and better qb play and for the gosh darn wr's to not drop the dang ball!!!!!! Maybe even be able to catch the un perfectly thrown ones.

Graduate senior quarterback Spencer Petras, a transfer from Iowa, led Utah State as he was 26-of-34 passing for 295 yards with two touchdowns, while fellow graduate senior Cooper Legas was 16-of-22 passing for 115 yards. Junior Bryson Barnes, a transfer from Utah, was 7-of-10 for 95 yards and sophomore McCae Hillstead was 6-of-10 from 45 yards.

was Marco really THAT bad?
At a certain point it felt like Kirk fell completely into coaching scared, and could only see how things could get worse - doesn't make sense to me, but then we've all spent 6 months trying to figure out how things looked in practice that they looked at the QB position and decided Hill was the least bad option.

I would say Lester is drilling the footwork, not harping on it. Footwork is a fundamental that even in the NFL continues to get drilled every day

Not surprised. History has proven this program's valuation of quarterbacks on the roster is flawed. There is an alternate universe where CJ Beathard and Ricky Stanzi never got in the game.

Just making the point that while our qb scouting of late has been flawed for sure, they also certainly had some hits as well.

I would argue that Iowa went from 2008-2019 with a steady stream of above average to good qb play; 4 guys that got drafted (including Rudock). Last 3 years have obviously not been good.
