Iowa State media

It's this months feel good story. Not worth the time of effort getting too worked up over it. They will fall back into obscurity soon enough.

Plus, I'd say one of their reporters for the Register or Ames Tib probably account for at least 1/2 of those votes, probably more.

After the iowa game I said isu would make a bowl it seems that with park out they are a better team I wouldn't be shocked to see 8 wins

If Josey Jewell had to play some QB this year we'd be slobbering all over it demanding national recognition ourselves.

Heisman/reality...absurd today. But if you think about it, this is a MLB playing QB and not just a token play or two, but important pieces of a for-the-school historic game.

That's Chuck Bednarik type stuff, only better. I'd have to think nobody has done anything even remotely close to it in 50+ years.

And just think if he does it the rest of the season, leading ISU to say a 7-5 though...

Heisman talk is silly at this point, but that doesn't diminish what he did, which in a lot of ways was modern day historic.

As a Cyclone fan, I am more than amazed at how well Lanning has transitioned into the LB role. Way better than I predicted. Making a lot of tackles while still learning the position.

I would tend to agree about it being amazing that an LB would play QB.... except he was the starting QB all last year, so more neat than impressive. Probably more impressive that he moved to LB this year even though your QB should be one of the more athletic people on the field and having an off season to prepare helps.

I wouldn't classify a former kickers twitter account as "Iowa State Media". I'm guessing one of those votes is from Randy Pete.

That said, what Lanning did is extremely impressive. Playing both ways in college football deserves recognition, especially when it was in a critical upset that shakes up the national landscape.

All of this attention ISU getting is good for Iowa, considering we beat them a couple of weeks ago.

8 wins? Really? They need 5 wins to reach that, with games against TCU and Oklahoma State still, as well as West Virginia.

Beating Oklahoma is a great win, and to just get to bowl eligibility they needed to upset someone...but now the conference is on notice. Wins against Kansas and Baylor are a must, should beat Texas tech to get to 6. That leaves West Virginia, k-state, TCU and Oklahoma State. I can see a path to 6-7 wins, 8 would require another major upset.

Doesn't bother me. Kid played two ways in a historic victory. Good for him. Heisman is a neat trophy for whoever gets it, but is it really that big of a deal? And we're only halfway through the season anyway, so don't let it get to you, man.

Wasn't there a Holy Cross player who was invited to NYC because he was playing two ways? In the 80s?

Yeah but they have a Heisman candidate on their team so anything is possible

Holy Cross's Gordie Lockbaum.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordie_Lockbaum
In Lockbaum's junior season of 1986, he rushed for 827 yards on 144 carries, caught 57 passes for 860 yards, and scored 22 touchdowns on offense; on defense he had 46 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one interception; on special teams he returned 21 kickoffs for 452 yards.[4] In a game against Dartmouth he scored six touchdowns,[5] and in a game against Army he was on the field for 143 of 171 total plays.[6] He was named WTBS college football player of the year,[4] New Jersey Sports Writers Association college player of the year,[7] and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.[8]

In his senior season of 1987, he rushed for 403 yards on 85 carries, and caught 77 passes for 1152 yards, amassing 2041 all-purpose yards and again scoring 22 touchdowns,[9] while continuing to play defense and special teams. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting,[10] second in the Maxwell Award voting,[3] and was runner-up for the inaugural Walter Payton Award (Division I-AA player of the year).[11] After the conclusion of the regular season, Lockbaum was selected for three all-star games; the Senior Bowl, the East–West Shrine Game, and the Blue–Gray Football Classic. He appeared in all three games, seeing the most action in the Shrine Game, where he played five positions (cornerback, free safety, strong safety, fullback, and wide receiver).[12]

Lockbaum was a two-time First Team All-America selection (1986 and 1987) as a defensive back. He still holds several Holy Cross offensive records, including most touchdowns in a season and most points in a season (22 and 132, respectively, accomplished in both 1986 and 1987).[13] Lockbaum was inducted into the Glassboro High School Hall of Fame in 1989,[2] the Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1993,[14] the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001,[3] and the ECAC Hall of Fame in 2017.[15]

Lockbaum twice had 2000+ total yards while playing full time on defense.

Lanning has a grand total of 61 yards this year.

It has only been a year since we have seen a guy play both sides. Peppers played 15 different positions for Michigan on both offense and defense. He also finished 5th for the Heisman.

Stuffed the ballot box did they?

This,

Mahoney is Iowa State, all day every day. He lives to go on Twitter and argue with Iowa fans about how great Iowa State is.

All your points are outstanding, although I would disagree that 7-5 would add anything. If the team were to somehow win 8 or 9 games, though, and he continues to have the kind of season he's having, he would be a very strong candidate -- he would be the guy everybody WANTED to win it because of the all-around athlete thing and the story of his change, yada, yada, yada, yada. A lot of voters would love to give the Heisman to somebody other than a QB or RB.

But ISU isn't going to win 8 or 9 games, so forgiddaboutit.

Lanning has been a great story no doubt, but Heisman trophy candidate is laughable. He played terrible against Iowa and was a big reason why Iowa was able to pull that game out. I know he has gotten better and kudos to him, but the media is just lapping up the story and not the actual on field results.

Rather see Lanning win it than another Alabama running back. At least he's doing something notable on the football stage.

First off, I love watching Iowa kids succeed in college football, no matter where they play. Lanning, no exception. On top of that, he seems like a really good kid. With that being said, I can't remember the last time I've seen one win make the local media slobber this much.

Maybe, but mostly it just shows how thin ISU's roster is. He's a decent linebacker, (not great), and he's a serviceable QB who was replaced by a decent QB. Kudos to Lanning for his efforts no doubt, but if he was on the kind of team where guys win national awards he wouldn't be playing two or three positions. I said when they made him their starting MLB, that if Weigers was our starting MLB this year, I'd have to seriously wonder what the hell happened to Iowa's recruiting.

Teams have to attack one player to test them Bower got it last week and held up pretty good. What I've seen of the Iowa States games teams are going after him and for the most part he has done pretty good and should have quite a few tackles.Probably the best LB they've had since Klein.

Heisman is for the best...

Lanning played because ISU has so many bad players they are desperate to get anyone even mediocre on the field. He wouldn't even be on the roster at a top 20 program, let alone be playing.

Jewell is a way better player, and he’s not getting any heisman votes. Lanning for heisman is a joke.

But Jewell doesn't get the sympathy vote for playing "two ways" and doesn't have a whopping 61 yards rushing.

What this tells me is that the Heisman is now a two person race..........

Barkley has a large lead on Luke Folk but Folk can still make a case if he leads WSU to the playoffs and Penn State starts to falter when they hit the meat of their schedule.

Mayfield is done because he is a douche, but also this stain of the ISU game is gonna be hard to overlook. Jackson can't do enough on his own to keep Louisville in the hunt. The rest are just there for recognition.

in my life I have seen institutional generated heisman hype on Dwayne Crutchfield, Blaise Bryant, Chris Pederson, Troy Davis, Seneca Wallace, and it seems like I am forgetting another 90s QB. Some of those guys were good, others pretty blah except in teh preseason mind of the ISU sid.

Thus, this is nothing and doesn't appear to be ISU generated. Pretty cool story in my opinion. The kid is a football player.

Sage Rosenfels?

Come on the kid had a great weekend and even went home and talked to the youth football kids about his journey. I think its a pretty cool story when you think about it. It shows up every single whiney spoiled little brat who said, "I'm not playing my position, Im gonna transfer or quit." He made a position change and embraced it. He worked hard at it and now the kid who replaced him is going through some issues and he got the call back to QB.

I think its freaking awesome and I dislike the cyclones. I root for them when they are not playing Iowa, but their fans drive me crazy.

But this Lanning story is pretty freaking awesome! Kudos to the young man for sticking it out. There are about 800 College basketball players and several football players who could learn some thing from this. When you don't get your way, don't quit and transfer. Suck it up and get better.

I can understand the reaction of Hawk fans -- seriously. There's a lot of over-slobbering happening at this point. The Heisman thing is ridiculous at this point -- with Davis and Wallace it was not, by the way. But as a former writer, I can recognize a great story when I see one (sometimes) and this is one.

There's a Bleacher Report feature story about it that quotes a guy who knows a little about playing linebacker:

"I can't even imagine doing what he's doing," says Iowa star linebacker Josey Jewell. "You can't just walk in and play this position. There are things you only learn from being out there, getting [repetitions] and doing it. There's nothing easy about doing what he's doing."
