Iowa State media

I can understand the reaction of Hawk fans -- seriously. There's a lot of over-slobbering happening at this point. The Heisman thing is ridiculous at this point -- with Davis and Wallace it was not, by the way. But as a former writer, I can recognize a great story when I see one (sometimes) and this is one.

There's a Bleacher Report feature story about it that quotes a guy who knows a little about playing linebacker:

"I can't even imagine doing what he's doing," says Iowa star linebacker Josey Jewell. "You can't just walk in and play this position. There are things you only learn from being out there, getting [repetitions] and doing it. There's nothing easy about doing what he's doing."
Josey is very comfortable with who he is and has no problem giving praise to someone that deserves it

And there in a nutshell is the difference between an Iowa player and a clone (like Lazard).

Sports fanatics on 1460 in Des Moines to a Cyclone fan suggesting Lanning for Heisman: "No way in hell"

Lanning has played LB for all of 5 games and he is an NFL prospect at the position. Turns out he is a pretty good all around football player and will only get better with more experience at the position. Has to be a bit of a bitter pill that he is considered better than Jewel in such a short time.

It's kind of funny that with Iowa and their multi million dollar coach are getting press for " the wave" while Iowa State is getting press for one of the greatest upsets in college football.

He's not considered better than Jewell. So there's that. I see Jewell on the NFL prospect lists but not Lanning.

Jewell is a top 10 inside linebacker on every 2018 draft ranking...3-4 round. Lanning is a cute story but he's not getting drafted.

The only one who considers him better than Jewell is you. That's it. Well and maybe Lanning's mom.

Clones only follow Iowa State football and are completely clueless that other teams exist. Worst college football fans in the country.

So you're saying a football win is more important than cheering up children with cancer. Those sure weren't the Iowa values I grew up with.

Good god. That is embarrassing and those voters should be identified and publicly ridiculed.

Give the kid break, he stayed at ISU when he lost his QB position and most other kids would have transferred. Experience at QB gives him great insight at LB, playing from the other side. Great kid, great attitude, amazing accomplishment, and nice to see him get some props.

First off, I love watching Iowa kids succeed in college football, no matter where they play. Lanning, no exception. On top of that, he seems like a really good kid. With that being said, I can't remember the last time I've seen one win make the local media slobber this much.

To be fair it’s not just the local media. He had a 7 minute segment on sports center this morning.

Its a neat story, but thats not the issue with Iowa fans. Its knowing that some clone fans would be on here making ridiculous comments like some of the ones posted above. Like that he's considered better then a guy who was voted a 1st team preaseason AA, and to every major defensive watch list. Not to mention he's one of the leading tacklers in college football again this year and has been honored several times in the first five weeks as a top national defender. Wonder why people here think that Cyclone and delusion are two words for the same puff of hot air?

That was dumb. Jewell is clearly a better linebacker.

However, Lanning has clearly outplayed expectations, including the people on this board's expectations for him. Jewell is #4 in the country in tackles. Lanning is #6. He's getting it done, and when you consider the last time he played linebacker was 8th grade, it's a tremendous accomplishment.

Masterful troll workings. It'd be like saying Iowa basketball has much more extensive success than ISU.....errr

That kind of reminds me of listening to Hawk Talk a couple of years ago and a guy called in and said I think we really should be talking about Weisman for Heisman.
Dolph laughed and said no, are you kidding?
The caller said no, his name rhymes and he is a good football player, so he should have a chance.
Dolph basically laughed him off the air

Some fans are delusional in every fan base. Iowa State winning caused a lot of people to lose their minds. I had a friend bragging to me about how many top 25 votes Iowa State got vs Iowa. Congrats.

Oh, it's nothing against Joel. He's clearly a great kid who stayed and battled when 99% of other kids would have just gave up and transferred somewhere else. I never root for anything ISU for obvious reasons, but it's hard not to like this kid and root for him. That being said, people giving him votes in a Heisman watch list should be embarrassed of themselves and never allowed to vote on the matter again. He's a decent linebacker who happened to take a few snaps on offense in a major upset; no more, no less.

This is a dumb post even for you. It might be time for you to get out of Texas, for your own good. Can you afford Arkansas?

I was talking with the head FB coach at my town's high school this week and he's a diehard, Cyclones are the best, Iowa's the worst type of fan. However, he said that he couldn't believe that anyone's even mentioning Lanning as an NFL prospect, because he can't diagnose plays and misses way too many tackles. The only reason he gets as many tackles as he does is because he's not very good and smart teams go at an opposing defense's weak spots, giving him more chances to make tackles.

Honestly, I haven't watched much of ISU's games since the Iowa game. Only saw highlights of Oklahoma, couple series against Texas. He has definitely outperformed expectations on this board, but when we played each other, I did not think he played all that well. Sounds like he has picked up his game since then.

No clearly to it, so Making that type of statement is dumb.....but you are used to it

LOL! He is not very good so he gets so many tackles by being in position to make them. You are sharp as a tack.

If Josey Jewell had to play some QB this year we'd be slobbering all over it demanding national recognition ourselves.

Heisman/reality...absurd today. But if you think about it, this is a MLB playing QB and not just a token play or two, but important piecof a for-the-school historic game.

That's Chuck Bednarik type stuff, only better. I'd have to think nobody has done anything even remotely close to it in 50+ years.

And just think if he does it the rest of the season, leading ISU to say a 7-5 though...

Heisman talk is silly at this point, but that doesn't diminish what he did, which in a lot of ways was modern day historic.

I will speak for myself, absolutely no slobbering......please don't base your post's premise on how other posters would respond.

The win was great in the short term for ISU. But with good openings that will be out there after the season, Campbell is gone. Hell Chizik turned 5 wins in 2 years to Auburn. After a couple of Rhodes' wins he could have gone a lot of places but he was an Ankeny/Ames guy. Campbell is gone.

Why are you stupid? Nobody in the world, other than you, thinks he's better than Jewell.

I'll bet you $500 to your $50.

Agree. His 5th career game was better than his 2nd.
