Iowa State Tournament this Weekend Wrestlers to Watch?

Someone to keep an eye on..mentioned a couple times on this board

3A-182 - Max Lyon (49-0) placed 6th and scored 10.50 team points.
Champ. Round 1 - Max Lyon (Epworth-Western Dubuque) 49-0 won by fall over Damon Deyo (Lewis Central) 25-11 (Fall 1:34)
Quarterfinal - Max Lyon (Epworth-Western Dubuque) 49-0 won by tech fall over Duncan Lee (Newton) 45-6 (TF-1.5 3:12 (16-0))

They switched it - Cook won by fall

Quarterfinal - Sam Cook (Fort Dodge) 43-0 won by fall over Devan Mann (Marshalltown) 39-8 (Fall 1:45)

Did he get thrown to his back?

Oh geez. How can they so consistently mess up? Any time a big name guy loses, you have to automatically assume they got it wrong.

Seems like they had the wrong guy associated to the wraps, as they had the score 0-2... I'm assuming it was really 2-0 and Cook turned him for the fall.

Man...he only has 5:14 left of wrestling for my prediction to hold true.

Yep Quarterfinal - Donovan Doyle (Iowa City-West) 54-1 won by decision over Justin Guilliams (Clinton) 44-3 (Dec 6-2)
That'll be a nice little championship match between Cook and Doyle, oh wait that's the semies..............................................................

Sounds like Bennett should've won his match with Biscoglia, but they ruled time had run out before a late escape.

Another unfortunate case of what is most likely the two best wrestlers at that weight/class meeting several rounds before the finals. #IAHSAAseeding

1A semi results:

Both West bros into the finals:
120 Drew West vs - Alex Thomsen

Semifinal - Carter Happel (Lisbon) 51-0 won by fall over Tanner Hoyer (Alburnett) 41-13 (Fall 1:02)

I wouldn't be against seeding completely but every year there are so many kids from certain parts of the state that come in with great records and based on their performance it is clear they faced less than stellar competition. This makes seeding quite a challenge. At the end of the day a tough matchup in the quarterfinal round or semi round should potentially only cost a kid 3rd instead of 2nd and I'm not sure "this should be a finals match" is all that important. The way it is now there are great match ups every round which makes for quite the tournament.

I assume Devan Mann is related to Mike Mann, a stud 190-pounder for ISU back in the late 70's, also from Marshalltown. Maybe a grandson?

EDIT: Looks like Mike is head coach at Marshalltown, which I assume many of you knew. Must be family. Mike was a beast, and although he was a Clone, a great sport and a guy I always rooted for. Definitely good blood lines there.

Mike Mann had the privilege of losing twice to Hawkeyes in the NCAA finals, to Ed Banach and Pete Bush. I believe each match was the first loss for Mann after three victories against Banach and even more against Bush.

Ryan Leisure from Clear Lake. 2A 138. Got 2nd as a freshman and first last year. Going for title #2. I would be surprised if anybody is able to give him a match in the semis or finals. I heard 2nd hand that his dad has lined up guys guys like Kendrick Maple to drill with out of season here and there.

Also saw a story early this season that he hopes to get a chance to wrestle at ISU.

BTW: I predicted Johnson from Osage @ 160 would breeze thru the weight... what do I know?

Champ. Round 1 - Max Lyon (Epworth-Western Dubuque) 50-0 won by fall over Damon Deyo (Lewis Central) 25-12 (Fall 1:34)
Quarterfinal - Max Lyon (Epworth-Western Dubuque) 50-0 won by tech fall over Duncan Lee (Newton) 47-6 (TF-1.5 3:12 (16-0))
Semifinal - Max Lyon (Epworth-Western Dubuque) 50-0 won by fall over Isaac Bartel (Mason City) 33-5 (Fall 2:15)

You're looking good on that prediction

Upset alert:
Semifinal - Matthew Randone (Assumption-Davenport) 41-8 won by decision over Aden Reeves (Albia) 35-2 (Dec 6-5)
**We'll see if they got it right

1a semis are just starting on channel 440 on dish network if you got it. 2a and 3a was just on and they are tape delaying 1a.

Down goes #1 Reeves for 2A Albia at 106. A Frosh thought might have a chance for 4X. Tough kid from my part of Iowa back in the day.

I was kind of surprised at this one. Let up at the end but he didn't look as dominant as I've seen in a few of his matches. Probably the most impressive guys I have seen so far in the whole tournament are Teske, Brands, and Happel...Happel only because he pinned his guy before I could get done peeing. Brands has just got to a whole new level and I really can't imagine many hanging with him from here on out. If he can translate that to freestyle, wow...

The team races are still up for grabs, though the front-runners are pretty established.

1A- Alburnett and Lisbon are separated by 1.5 points.
2A- Creston/Orient-Macksburg has an 8 point lead on Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, though the Cowboys will have their opportunities to catch them.
3A- Southeast Polk has a 6 point lead on Fort Dodge in this two-team race. Dual champ Valley has recovered some, but is pretty firmly entrenched in 3rd.

Both SEP and FD have 3 in the Finals including a head-to-head matchup between Nathan Lendt (SEP) and Tristan Lara (FD). The difference, though, will most likely come down to what the two teams do in the Consolation Round, where the Rams have the advantage with more wrestlers.

If he can translate that to 157-174 in an iowa singlet, even better.

Went to take a leak before Happel's match, came back to see him running off the mat. That was quick

Sounds like someone NEEDS a catheter. I might have a "slightly" used one that I'd sell cheap. That would save me the time of putting it on Craigslist.:D
