Iowa trying to make their 7th NCAA tourney in the last 9 years

Nice stat Jon mentioned after the MN win just now...I don't take it for granted after the end of the Alford era, Lickliter disaster and Fran digging us out of a crater. Yes it sucks when we go 1 and done or lose as a high seed before 2nd weekend but this is impressive.

I get why they don't count 2020, but for a team like Iowa who was a lock to make it they may as well include it in stats like these. That would make it 8/10 and 5 straight.

Have the Iowa men’s/women basketball teams been using this ball at all this year in prep for the March tournaments?

Should have made it in 2013 as well. Screw job against Sparty in BIG tourney away
That's a clear example of why the NET is significantly better than RPI. Iowa's RPI is basically the only reason it was kept out (and given a 3 seed in the NIT no less). They likely only have 2 losses outside of Q1 that season (VA Tech and Nebraska both on road). They likely have 3 or 4 Q1 wins as well even without the Michigan State screwjob.

I'm so glad we have gone away from that terrible system.

Agreed completely.

Iowa men and women use the Nike Elite, I believe. Minnesota used the same today.

Do NOT get me started on that game, perhaps one of the few games I've watched (Iowa or non Iowa) where bias was VERY evident and you really had to wonder if money was on that game by Teddy V. Throw in the Outback Bowl vs. FL as well...

Wouldn't it be ironic that this could be the year to finally claw back to the Sweet 16? If we get seeded in Des Moines and avoid the 8/9 line there's a chance, especially after having the NPOY in Garza and Keegs and this was going to be a 'fringe' year...would be so IOWA but I would thoroughly enjoy it. Just want to soak in the M-Th experience after Iowa wins two games for the first time since Tom Davis (can't believe I just typed that!)

People on here who make it a point to bitch about the refs and anti-Iowa bias at every turn irritate the shit out of me. With that said, I walked out of that MSU game steaming mad.

Ironically, Keith Appling ,the MSU guard in this game pled guilty to 2nd degree murder yesterday in a Michigan courtroom.
MSU got away with a lot on the court that day but Appling did not get away with murder in that court. Appling and another Sparty star were accused of rape in their frosh season but Izzo went to bat for them and they skated...Izzo must be so proud.

That is kind of impressive actually.

Just wish we could do something when we get there.

Just look at our defense for your answer on why we haven't done anything.

I realize most Iowa fans simply want to make a Sweet 16. However, over the last 20 seasons, KenPom has shown that your defense needs to be ranked at least the following to achieve higher goals:

70: to make a Final 4
22: to win a National Championship

And speaking of Final Fours and National Championships, just go back 2 seasons to the 2021 NCAA Tournament, where we were a #2 seed and were thinking Final 4 because we essentially had 4 NBA players on that team: Luka, Joe, Keegan and Kris. Unfortunately we only advanced to the round of 32 (we scored 80 vs Oregon but gave up 95). And that 2021 team's defense ranking was just #75, which, again, is not good enough for a Final 4 (you need to be 70 or better).

Our offense is as good as ever this year (currently #6 in the nation). Many thought Iowa's defense would be better this year with JBo gone and with him being replaced by Ahron Ulis in the starting lineup. Last year's defense finished ranked #80. This year? We currently are #142. Iowa is DEAD LAST in the B1G in defense. Sound familiar?

Of the 20 national champions tracked by KenPom:

* the lowest any National Champion finished in Offensive Efficiency was 39th (2014 UConn)

*
the lowest any finished in Defensive Efficiency was 22nd (2021 Baylor).

Based on this, Purdue looks like the only true national title contender from the B1G.

The B1G teams ranked by defense (per KenPom):

Defense..Offense...Team
Rank
........Rank........Rank
2.................132............16.....Rutgers
16.................76...........30....Michigan State
17.................49...........20.....Illinois
23..................7..............4.....Purdue
25................98...........47.....Northwestern
27.................42...........25.....Maryland
29...............146...........71.....Wisconsin
37..................18...........19.....Indiana
59...............179..........102....Nebraska
68................46...........53.....Michigan
94................27............51.....Ohio State
115................21...........55.....Penn State
137............299..........224....Minnesota
142..............6..........34....Iowa

Without even watching I remember Dev getting clotheslined on a 3 and no call and Sparty getting 2 pts when the shot clock had expired.
And that was all in the first half...see video above. Nix got away with an obvious 5-step travel that resulted in an "and 1" and White was called for a ticky tack shooting foul with 30 seconds left.

It is very impressive. A small run would be wonderful.

NCAA Tourney Appearances in the Fran era:

2014- First Four; L Tennessee
2015- 2nd Rd; W Davidson, L Gonzaga
2016- 2nd Rd; W Temple, L Villanova
2019- 2nd Rd; W Cincinnati, L Tennessee
2020- *Covid year, would've made tourney
2021- 2nd Rd; W Grand Canyon, L Oregon
2022- 1st Rd; L Richmond

Counting the covid year as a tournament team, if Iowa makes the NCAA Tournament this year, it will have matched the longest string of "tournament eligible/selected" teams in program history.

Since the expanded era of the NCAA Tournament, Iowa has had two different 5-year runs with NCAA Tournament teams, first from 1979-1983 then quickly again from 1985-1989. Of course, Iowa saw a bit more success in both those runs, making 4 Sweet 16s, 2 Elite 8s, and a Final Four appearance in 1980.
