Iowa vs Rutgers

He isn't ranked because the one opportunity he has had to get ranked he lost the match. Stoll has to actually beat a ranked guy to get ranked. This Thursday gives him that opportunity. He's not gonna get ranked because he beat ISU and SDSU guy, needs to build the resume a little more.
This. Also I watched some of his matches last year at Midlands, he looked lost. He got launched a couple of times.
He does look much improved but he has a very limited college resume.

Was there any notification of this besides Ironside on the radio? I am a season ticket holder and didn't get an email or anything.
I have heard it from a few avenues. Disappointing that not everyone knows.

Yup, I saw when online ordering my Rose Bowl tickets that the Rutgers time had changed from 5 to 7. Otherwise I'd have been at Carver at 4:30 Thursday, using a couple of hours of vacation in order to make it. So happy I don't have to use that vacation... but yeah, communication could improve.

I think this is a much-improved Rutgers team. Iowa will win, but this may be second-best team they've met so far this season, and maybe the best Rutgers team ever. Rutgers isn't a top 5 team, but they may be top ten, with some solid lower weights and HWT. I saw them wrestle at the NE Duals in November, and they seemed in-shape and fundamentally sound, even if they lack the talent of a Gilman, Clark, or Brooks.

Ashnault may hammer Ryan. Perotti could major Rhodes. This will be a good test to see how Stoll is developing. Competitive performances from the Hawks at 141 and 165 would a good sign going into Midlands.

I've been waiting for an email as well because I've heard about the change from three different (but unofficial) sources, so I was planning on calling the ticket office tomorrow. I hate the Thursday night meets too. They used to always be against UNI, but that has changed(obviously) since they haven't been scheduled for a few years. The basketball game will hurt attendance, but the 5 PM time would have also. I'll be getting 4-5 hours sleep by the time I get home on a work night. I've missed 5 meets since CHA opened, and 3 of them were Thursday nights because my sons had meets the same time.

I'm looking forward to this dual. We've got two great match-ups at 157 and 285 that will put Cooper and Stoll on the radar if they win, and we've got nothing to lose at 141 and 165. Looking for bonus points from everyone else.
+1, I agree about nothing to lose. Would love to see them wrestle with this mentality.

Don't sleep on Giraldo at 133 - he is a dark horse. If you don't believe me go watch his match against Brewer from this year. 3 take downs like it's nothing in the first 2 minutes then makes a mistake in fighting off a takedown and goes to his back. Garrett was kept to a decision and his points also came from one mistake Giraldo made. I don't think he will beat Clark, but I think this match will be better than some realize. An upset is not 100% unthinkable.

I've known Giraldo since he was a kid. He absolutely has two speeds. When he's on he can wrestle with the best of them. But a lot of times he asleep on his feet. He could win, he could get majored.

He won't be asleep on Thur. Everyone wants to beat Iowa, especially in Carver.

Anthony Giraldo has almost zero chance against Clark. His best win this season is Joey Palmer and I don't believe in "I kept it close" moral victories. Maybe he shocks the world, but his results do nothing to suggest that he'll do any better than simply keeping it close.

I didn't say I thought he would win over Clark, only that he could make things interesting. And the example against Brewer wasn't "I kept it close" it was "I mauled the returning national champ on my feet for over two minutes before getting pinned". Clark is notably weaker on his feet than Brewer, so I wouldn't at all be surprised if he gave up a few TDs along the way. Mat wrestling will be a whole other ball game that should definitely favor Clark, though. Again, I am not predicting the upset to happen, just stating that I think the match will be more exciting than a lot think.

I don't disagree with you. Just throwing out my two cents

Appreciate the information. I didn't know any of this.

Yes, we will be missing this dual also due to the fact that we have high school wrestling duals and our youth program is being introduced. I do understand the timing. Due to dead week, starting on Saturday, they had to get the dual in before Friday night......and the women are hosting ISU on Friday......so had to do it on Thursday.

Good stuff ITT from the Hawkeyes. Looking forward to a good match tomorrow,, and always learn a lot from your board. I'm glad that my Knights are doing well in at least one sport, so let's hope we keep it close.

As an aside, congrats on the football season--must be nice to have had such a good season that you feel disappointment that you're going to the Rose Bowl. Great comeback season and glad Ferentz is loved again.

Appreciate your post. The hard part about the title game is how close they came and how crushing the loss was for this team, CJ seemed to take it especially hard. That guy is a warrior. Thanks again and good luck the rest of the season!

Giraldo has looked good on his feet, but as mentioned Clark has been establishing himself as a beast on top. Giraldo is kinda of a lanky kid and Clark's inside wrist control set ups should lead to some 4 point back points if/when he gets on top. I'm sure Brands is pounding into his head to keep his feet moving and get off first. He can win the scrambles, but if he lets Girado get off his leg attacks first, he's going to have to play the catch up game, ala Alex Meyer.

Make no bones about it Rutgers is pretty tough dual team. If Iowa wants to let the country no that they are for real, a convincing win against the Scarlet Knights will go a long way towards that.

I'll be real impressed if Stoll gets an upset over Billy Smith. Smith is an experienced solid wrestler and he's pretty big. Sammy's gonna need some technical offensive firepower to get the win here.

Pretty sure these services rank other RS frosh that haven't beaten anyone ranked.
Never ever ever ever has that happened at Flo.

Stoll lost to Gage Hutchison and Jacob Henderson last year. A win over Brooks Black doesn't overcome that with such a limited resume. This year his wins are over Medley, Quean Smith and Macki.

He wrestles in the Big 10, if he's a top 20 guy (which I suspect he will be that at a minimum) he will have many opportunities and will be up there eventually. Micah Jordan was #20 prior to CKLV. It can be tricky in month 1 for a Freshman.

CP, Honest question here....

I see McKenna was ranked in your September 23 rankings prior to wrestling a match. I agree with a lot of your rankings criteria, just wondering how he was ranked so soon as a Freshman?

It was prior to wrestling a match for Stanford, but not prior to wrestling a college match.
He wrestled and defeated d1 competition at Midlands where he knocked off Josh Dziewa (top 10 guy all last year), Steven Rodrigues (top 10 some, but ranked all year), Jordan Laster (round of 12) and Timmy Box. He had one loss to Shy Brown. That was enough to earn a rather modest pre-season ranking. It wasn't until he defeated Henderson at the Hokie Open that he jumped high into the rankings.

I don't know this is the reason, but a Junior level World Silver medal probably helped. He also had a ridiculous high school career. This probably wouldn't get him ranked at any other weight, but 141 is kinda goofy.

Freestyle accolades would never factor in. Nor would any high school rankings/accomplishments.

Kyle Snyder was a Junior World Champ and had an impeccable HS Career and was UR to start last year, then about a week in he had a few ranked wins and was top 10.

Perfect, makes total sense.

It would be interesting to see how the heavyweights were ranked last year after the top guy lost about 3 weeks in a row.

Howdy, HAWKEYE FANS ! Awesome football season you guys had ! I'm looking forward to tonight's match to see how far RU has closed the gap from last year's match. At 141 Ashnault is wrestling the best of his career, I expect bonus points for RU here. At 157 Lewis and Van Brill both traveling to Iowa I hear, and if Lewis goes I expect 3 more RU points. At 165 Anthony Perrotti also wrestling at Peak Form, and I expect 4 points here, as well as Heavyweight , where Billy Smith is wrestling well. That makes RU winning at least 4 matches. Hopefully around 15 points scored for RU. RU is coming off a free weekend after beating Cornell and George Mason at Madison Sq Garden the previous week. Those travelling to MSG for the end of year NCAA tourny will like the venue but not the hotel prices, lol.
RU faces Nebraska 2 Nebraska 2 days later at home, tough stretch. RU just had it's best recruiting season ever for wrestling, ranking 5 by Win Magazine.

PS- I'm looking forward to the Brands special video on Flo Wrestling. When RU faced Iowa at home last season, I had the pleasure of sitting next to the Iowa bench and got the whole Brands brothers show all night long, lol.

Did I read this as Stoll getting majored correctly?

Smith recently beat the Cornell Heavy #20 Sweany 8-1, and Oklahoma's heavy #44 Lawson. He lost to quicker heavy's #6 Blaize Cabell of NIowa, 9-3, and Oregon St's Dhesie ranked around 5. Unless your Heavy is very quick , and I know little about him, other than he had a very respectable loss to Ok St #3 Mardseon 4-2 and a pin against the ISU Heavy ranked around 50, I expect, or should I say HOPE, lol, a possible 4 point win.

Smith is a senior who has wrestled pretty well the last 2 years, I don't expect him to get rattled at your place, and with his recent good showings, I'd be surprised if it was closer than 4 points.

Be prepared to be extremely surprised

I'll be watching ! lol. I just watched some youtube of your guy, if Smith loses to him, I will be surprised. But you never know, Smith has some lackluster showings here and there, and by the time the Heavyweight match comes around the match will be over so not a lot riding on the match.

Stoll may not beat Smith, but I'd bet the farm Smith doesn't major him. IMO, a Stoll win is much more likely than a Smith major.

Good luck to the Knights from tomorrow on, except when they run into any Hawks at Big Tens and/or Nationals. By the way, is Rutgers heading to Midlands? Can't keep all of that straight.

YES, Rutgers will be at The Midlands, and I'm happy to see it will be broadcast on FREE BTN (already have a Flo subscription).

HS Football just finished up here in NJ, now onto to HS Wrestling. In NJ our HS powerhouses are Blair Academy and Bergen Catholic, both Non Public. A lot of great Christmas Tourny's to look forward to. Beast of the East probably the best, followed by Ironman in Ohio.

Great -- best of luck to the Knights at Midlands, except when they run into Hawks. It's great to see a strong program developing out there, adding to the power of the Big Ten.

Nice video on Stoll ! Now I'm nervous ! lol. Hey, I think RU is going to win 157 , I'm hearing our Richie Lewis is on for tonight, and he's had a nice season until he got banged up 2 weeks ago.
Hope this is accurate :

I'm hopeful that Cooper still gets the win at 157. He hung right with highly-ranked Jack of SDSU in their last dual meet. Kid has a lot of talent, and I have faith he's going to put together a solid season.
