At one point earlier this year, a South Dakota State vs. Iowa basketball game was likely on several brackets in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Basketball Tournament 🏀
Well, that didn't materialize for either program. One and done.
In College Football, we don't want even think about one and done, after what unfolded in 2020.
We are 28 days, 4 weeks from being back in Kinnick Stadium for the kickoff of the 2022 season.
It does start up front for the Iowa Hawkeyes in Kirk Ferentz's 24th season at the helm for this program. Forty years ago he was in his 2nd season as offensive line coach in Iowa City. Twenty years ago, he won his first Big Ten co-champion title and became AP National Coach of the Year for his team's 8-0 performance.
It would be putting it mild, that I am excited for the 2022 Big Ten season for the Hawkeyes. The home slate is outstanding and for the first time, since 2017, Iowa plays Ohio State in B1G play.
Scott wrote Brian "Ferentz’s January notes often go unused or ignored in game preparation. An opponent may look different, its personnel may have changed, or injuries may prevent Iowa’s offense from exploiting a perceived weakness. It happened in real time for Ferentz in June. Within a day of this breakdown, wide receiver Charlie Jones left for Purdue. It already has altered the approach for the season opener against South Dakota State."

In 2017, when he became OC after five seasons as OL coach, Iowa was coming off an 8-5 season, and he had to break-in a new starting QB. He pulled off two B1G wins in his first road opener at Iowa State, winning 44-41 in OT. Then, a huge 55-24 win against Ohio State.
The 2017 was, like Greg Davis final season as OC, the Hawks finished 8-5 overall, but fell to 4-5 in Big Ten, after finishing 6-3 with a senior starter at QB.
Since 2018, Iowa in the Big Ten:
The Ken O'Keefe and Greg Davis days are done. Veteran coaches, who clearly were Kirk Ferentz's choices for OC/QB coaches back in the day.
Iowa has become younger in the offensive coaching room. TE coach Abdul Hodge is the newest position coach. OL coach George Barnett and RB coach Ladell Betts are entering year 2. The veteran assistant now for Brian is WR Kelton Copeland.
Time for Brian Ferentz to break out with a two QBs with experience, a young, but potentially better OL room, enough veterans in the receiver and running back rooms, but still a young offensive team, lead by senior TE Sam LaPorta and QB Spencer Petras entering his third season as QB1.
Sophomore WR Keagan Johnson is right, it is on the players to go out there and execute on what the coaches put them out there to perform.
"Make it happen" is the next step for the Hawkeyes. We are 4 weeks out!
From 2017-2020, OC Brian Ferentz had two solid WRs, tough injuries did creep up at times for both.
In 2021, and heading into 2022, Iowa has two sophomores taking over hopefully in leading the WR room, along with fifth year senior Nico Ragaini.
Iowa’s roster is trending upward, in many ways. Depth is always a concern at Wisconsin or Iowa. #1 in 2022, Iowa needs to take care of business first and foremost, at Kinnick.
Iowa is 46-21 at home the past ten years, but from 2001 to 2010, the Hawks were 54-12 at home under Kirk Ferentz.
Too many Homecoming losses lately for the Hawks. The past three seasons though Iowa is 6-1, 3-1 and 6-1, so maybe the next 10 is beginning to trend upward.
In 2006, Iowa came up short at Kinnick, in the Kirk Ferentz's biggest home game to date vs. #1 Ohio State, since last year's #3 v #4 game vs. Penn State.
In 2022, the schedule is fantastic, but the B1G game with Ohio State this go around is in Columbus. Hopefully, Iowa does better than 38-17 and is ranked higher than #13, at kickoff.
It's Great to be a Hawkeye, indeed. Let's make it count in 2022!
