Iowa women #2 in the nation

Prediction: The selection committee makes us a 2 seed, but screws us over by putting us in South Carolina's bracket.
There's no way we'll be the #8 overall. #4 overall (still playing SC) is a high probability. 6 seed is the lowest we can fall according to anyone who knows anything about NET/the committee/bracketology/etc.

The cream rises to the top.

It'd be hard to deny them #1 seed at this point.

Having said that, I think this ranking is not in line with reality. I dont think the Big Ten is that strong.

I think a 3 seed fits this team.

Hopefully a Sweet Sixteen appearance. They've been elusive.
You'd think so but they Virginia Tech in there now.

What makes you say this when they have 4 of the top 12 teams ranked? Iowa beat a full strength ISU, MD beat Uconn and Notre Dame(who turned around and beat Va Tech). Indiana beat Tenn and UNC.

Iowa women should reach the Elite 8 this year -- losing before that would make this a disappointing season.

While Iowa still has Clark (a generational player), there should be considerable pressure on Bluder to reach a Final 4. Depending on how Iowa does in this year's tournament will determine how aggressive Bluder should be in the portal this off-season to complement Clark.

I think they will put IOWA in a bracket that's the easiest so they get more chances of being on TV. They want viewers and Iowa is the most MUST watch team in the nation and CC is the biggest star in the tournament.

I would like to think that, but the Selection Committee is made up of a group of AD's and assistant AD's whose only concern is picking the best 68 teams. Too bad it isn't up to ESPN.

do we find out if Iowa hosts the 1st 2 rounds on selection sunday? i assume we do, but was wondering about the timing of ticket sales, etc.

When you look at Va Tech, their best win is neutral vs Duke.
Iowa’s 3rd best win last week was neutral vs Ohio State who is better than Duke.

Zero top ten wins.
Iowa went 3-3 vs top ten. (UConn, Ind, Maryland).

tech schedule not as weak as LSU but not top end teams.

Yes, we find out the bracket on Sunday night at 7:00 on ESPN. Season ticket holders have until this Friday to claim their seats. Ticket sales to the general public go on sale this Saturday the 11th. It is presumed that Iowa will be named a hosting site.

It's more than a presumption....

Context can't explain away a 28 point loss.
We have to go all the way back to 2021 to find a similar loss for a team that ended up finishing as the national runner up. Now it wasn't a 28 point loss, only a 27 point loss which they followed up with a loss to a team that went 12-12. In 2022 the runner up lost to the 6th place team from the ACC, an unranked Oregon team. The year before? the runner up lost to an unranked 18-15 team. Not really a lot of context needed. It happens.

Not a troll.

Look at the non conference.

Losses against unranked K-State (Record 16-15 )and unranked NC State (20-11).

Legit #2 ranked teams don't have those losses.
Indiana, predicted a #1 seed, split with Iowa, a legit 1 doesn't have those lose to a lower ranked team.

Maryland, a predicted #1 seed, got beat by Iowa 2 out of 3, a legit 1 doesn't let that happen by a lower ranked team, with tie breaker on a neutral venue.

Head to head matters? Iowa is 3 & 2 against two #1 seeds. Financially speaking, aka paid fans in the seats, Iowa had the highest average attendance & the biggest attendance & media drawing star in all of WBB!

Ponder that selection committee.

It depends on the matchup, as usual.

If we happen to get the top 2 seed, there are still several very good 3 seeds out there we could potentially meet in the Sweet 16 (if we get there and don't go cold like last year).

Even as a 1 we could potentially wind up looking at Arizona matched up in the Sweet 16, and they have been very solid the last few years including a Championship game appearance.

I'm well aware of the results.
Like I said, I give you props for trolling. I also know that even when you are trolling (legitimately) on HROT you don't like taking credit for it, because you have to "stay in character". I get it.

Sorry not sorry though for breaking down that fourth wall......... ;)

Didn't VT lose to NC St.? We had injuries in those games but that is an excuse. Iowa has more wins over top 10 teams than anyone.
NC State was ranked 10th or at least in the top-15 when they played us. To their credit, they matched us FG for FG for awhile in the second half. We just couldn't get a lead. KState was ranked for a short time, too, either before or after our game. Weren't we down a starter for either of those games?

We weren’t down starters. Furthermore the NC state loss was a really bad one in terms of optics. We lost that by playing right into their defense in the same way we did when we got demolished by MD. A lot of ppl laughed at us, during both games. Fortunately we’ve clearly learned the lessons of those losses or we wouldn’t have been able to beat MD again.

Tbh I feel cautiously optimistic heading into the tourney. This team has a higher ceiling than last not in small part due to Stuelke, Affolter and Davis all bringing unique strengths. Furthermore Clark has improved significantly as a floor general and at shooting (didn’t know that was possible tbh). Marshall, Warnock and Martin all seem to be at the top of their games. Warnock was there last year but Martin only came on in the ‘22 B1G tourney. Marshall has been a weak spot this year on offense for sure but she really came thru for us in a big way in every game of the tourney.

On Twitter/Reddit, the consensus seems to be that when 2 other players not named Clark are hitting 3s, we are an extremely dangerous team.

Comparing this year to last year, we seem to have gotten over many humps.

OSU: Last year we went 0-1. They returned everyone and gained the FOY in McMahon. This yr we went 2-0. Sheldon was out our first game but their team is highly athletic. She was in the second for limited minutes and this was the day after she had an EXCELLENT game to defeat IU.

MD: We hadnt beat Maryland since Fall 2019. We went 2-1 this year. They arguably had less talent this yr than last but they have better chemistry this yr. Bluder owned the the loss on a poor game plan (and MD was shooting way over their typical FG%). In other two games we basically led the whole game. Most importantly the final game was only a few days ago and MD was even considered a 1 seed at the time.

Michigan: We split 1-1 last year and went 1-0 this yr. Clark and Co demolished them last yr with B1G POY Naz Hillmon on the floor. This yr they look very different and we still held them in check. Pretty comfortable win actually over a well balanced squad.

IU: IU is significantly better than last year, and they were already rly good (returning their two stars and upgrading at all 3 other positions). We went 3-0 vs them last year (admittedly when their star 5 was injured, but this was the same squad that made the Elite 8 in ‘21). This yr we went 1-1. In the right order. We were in control 95% of the game we won.

ISU: ISU has slumped thru their season but they were ranked when we played and have gotten some quality Ws both this year and last. Last year we lost. This yr they returned everyone and got a major upgrade in the portal. We won comfortably.

Last year we lost to Creighton, a physical, guard heavy team. This yr we improved our posture against similar teams. MD is the best example. Drake, another. ISU to an extent as well (they had a 5 but they didn’t always utilize her like one, and all their other players are Gs).

Our offense and our defense are better, it seems safe to say. We are seeing a lot less of the defensive issues that plagued us last year.

We are by no means a shoe in for a Final 4 or Elite 8 but this roster is battle tested and have learned a lot of lessons together. They are also playing tough, which I couldn’t say last year. The tourney was the best these 5 + role players have ever looked, no exaggeration.

Did you mean to respond to me? I said we were down in that K State game. I was thinking Warnock or Martin but I can't remember. NC St. kind of fell apart down the stretch.

I remember Martin had a shield on for a couple of games. Am thinking Warnock, too, perhaps was out a game or two.

Much thanks for the review, Shikreto! I remember Martin with the face shield and thought Warnock maybe missed a game or two as well. CC's passing is nails and her teammates seem so locked in to their roles; bench players, too. And excellent team summaries. When the brackets are released Sunday, please share Iowa's opponents' strengths & weaknesses all the way to the championship game.
