Iowa Women...To beat SoCar they must____

This is the classic, David against Goliath story. Iowa is much smaller in stature but you can't measure their heart. We'll have to be more efficient at putting the rock in the basket.

They are bigger than Iowa - we'll lose the rebounding battle by a large margin

They are very athletic, we'll need to shoot from beyond the arc, very well.

Hope the Hawks have a miracle night.

I got bad feeling South Carolina is going to feast on boards and 2nd chance points. This contest is an obvious low post mismatch and potential nightmare for Iowa. If they had lines I would bet heavy SC Over 15 ORB, +20 is possible, would not be surprising.

IMO the only way to win is to shoot lights out to keep it close and hope SC chokes late.
Not to mention that Staley will play up the disrespect card BIG time to her players. We've seen all year teams and even some of the coaches complaining that CCs star power gets all the pub. It won't be true in this case because the Cocks get major pub, but it will be a real thing for them to want to show why their girl should be NPOTY and not Clark. As good as they are on defense the heat on CC will be intense. Hope she keeps her cool, and can still play her game.

IMHO it won’t be the rebounding of MC, Stuelke and O’Grady that will determine how many offensive boards they get, but rather it will be whether or not our guards actually decide to block out their assignments.

The Gamecocks are now 36-0 this season & have won 42nd straight dating back to last year's NCAA title run.

They have experience (third straight Final 4), size and depth. They defend and they rebound extremely well. My gosh, they have a 6'7 and a 6'4 girl coming off the bench. Sometimes their 6'7 gal plays alongside 6'5 Boston. With their considerable size, they hit the glass hard, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

The Gamecocks are first in the country in points allowed per game, field goal percentage defense and blocked shots per game. Every team South Carolina has played scored below its average. Now comes the biggest test with Iowa, which leads the nation in scoring (87.6 PPG).

We better stay out of foul trouble. In the regional final, Maryland was called for 26 fouls; USC was called for just 12 fouls. Ironically, in the postgame, Maryland players were asked about the physical play inside; one Maryland player responded, "It's funny how you say that when all the fouls were going one way....Clearly we needed to be more physical, I guess, on the offensive side, because every time they hit us, nothing was called." Another Maryland player said this about the 26-12 foul difference: "So we were the more physical team, apparently."

In the 2nd quarter, two of Maryland's key players had to sit with 2 fouls each. Regarding the 2nd quarter, when USC outscored Maryland 23-9, Brenda Frese said this: "You felt like you were coaching with one arm behind your back," Frese said of the second quarter. "When they were calling so many of them, you were kind of just juggling who you had on the bench and back and forth, and it kind of felt like that all game. You're just trying to see who you could keep in the longest."

So, yes, how the refs call the game will be important. Iowa staying out of foul trouble will be important.

Iowa needs to start the game strong. They trailed 8-0 early vs Louisville and Lisa called a quick time out. Similar to USC, Iowa has experience on its side. The lineup of Clark, Marshall, Warnock, Czinano and Martin has started 90 games together.

South Carolina's Starting 5:

Aliyah Boston.......6'5 senior, 12.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 56% FG
Victaria Saxton....6'2 senior, 5 ppg, 3 rpg, 47% FG
Brea Beal...............6'1 senior, 6 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 43% FG
Zia Cooke..............5'9 senior, 15 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 2 apg, 40% FG
Kierra Fletcher......5'9 senior, 4.6 ppg, 3 rpg, 2 apg, 42.5% FG

4 Key players off the bench:

Kamilla Cardoso.....6'7 junior, 9.7 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 55% FG
Laeticia Amihere....6'4 senior, 7 ppg, 3 rpg, 49% FG
Bree Hall..................6'0 soph, 5 ppg, 2 rpg, 40% FG
Raven Johnson.......5'8 fresh, 4 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 37% FG

Maryland did well against SC until they fell apart in the 2nd quarter. The issues were they couldn’t get a rebound and when they did get the ball they turned it over. So if Iowa can limit the extra possessions and take care of the basketball they might have a shot.

Jolette is our insider that’s going to somehow mix in some old shrimp in the SC team dinner on Thursday night right?

We have a puncher’s chance. Our punch is 3pt shooting. If we’re hot we can stay in the game. If we’re average or worse it will be a loss. We can’t be missing all of the layups like we did this past weekend too. As others said, limit turnovers to below 10. And finally, these last few games exposed our bad defensive rebounding in the zone defense and it will get worse in this game. But it all comes down to shooting.
I didn't realize Jolette Law was on the SC staff, I'd lost track of her after she left Illinois.

If we shoot like we did against Louisville, and then we need to box out & hope the refs call over the back and we get some charging calls to go our way. Do not shy to fall down and make it look terrible so the refs have no choice but to call the foul on them. We can do this!!!! I like that we'll be the underdog....just play and give it your all. win or lose, its been a GREAT season

I think they will need to spread the floor to open up backdoor cuts and Czinano has to be willing to take the 15ft jumper. SC can be beaten off the dribble but if their bigs are able to clog up the middle, it will be a long night. Hopefully Caitlin can draw two defenders to open up everyone else to knock down 3's. I think SC will try to guard Caitlin straight up to begin with.

Start the game by driving straight to the basket and hope we can get their Bigs in early foul trouble.

^^ this is one thing I think to try, either drives or quick passes to monica or hannah to get some fouls on their bigs, Take It Up Strong.

I think you push pace when you have the numbers, either fast break or secondary quick treys/shots out of breaks which can make it easier to get offensive rebounds.

Defense maybe try to front and back Boston is it their big center while keeping them at the arc and not letting them drive.

Hands up on defense for 40 minutes to deflect passes.

Watching this game MU vs uSC, what does Iowa need to do to win the game? Rebounding is a must. Defensively?

Maryland is losing ground possession by possession but could come back.

How does Iowa win?

I already replied with some other thoughts but I want to add to not force passes into real tight windows as I would rather have CC, Gabby, Kate, and Warnock shooting treys and other jumpers than make a lot of turnovers.

The gals shoot very well and if they can shoot even better than that then keep moving the ball around, setting screens, make jumpers and eventually you can get the passes into the post.

I would try to get some fouls on their bigs early to see what the refs are calling but we will see about that

And then the refs spent the rest of the game trying to foul out Maryland's roster.

Clark will need to be as focused from the start like she was in the last game.
not crazy like in the first half of the Georgia game.

Keep them off the glass is priority one.
They look beatable but no matter what it’s gonna be tough. In my mind this is the national championship game

With SC's size, I expect we'll have to play some zone to try to clog the lane. Zone makes rebounding difficult. I expect Bluder is going to have a conundrum of playing zone to slow them down offensively or going man to man to try to rebound better but giving up some points as a result.

Yeah, the refs did them no favors. If the refs do this to Iowa then Iowa has no shot. I am sure SC is prepping for Iowa hoping to get Caitlyn and Monica into early foul trouble. Monica is going to have her hands full, we might be seeing a lot of O'Grady.

Start some trash talk about false eyelashes;). But seriously, get out and run. Keep a fast paced game and beat their bigs down the court. A set offense focusing and getting the ball down low after their defense has set up won't end well. If 3's are going down, the Hawks win.

This team needs that Iowa spoiler attitude like we used to have in Football at Kinnick. I can vividly remember those night games against teams like Penn State, Michigan, and Ohio State who were all expecting to get the National Championship crown, but forgot about playing the game. There was that under the lights magic at Kinnick.

Although this in Hawkeye women’s basketball, not football and playing on a BB court in Dallas, we are, however, playing under the lights. And perhaps South Carolina’s undefeated record will fall like the previous football teams I mentioned.

Go Hawks.

Refs did not do MD any favors last night protecting SC for whatever reason.

I really do not think Iowa can overcome the refs, SC height advantage, and physical play to pull the upset off. Hope I am wrong, but it would take just short of miracle for Iowa to win.

We must obviously block out on the defensive end (presenting some semblance of rebounding) and limit their second-chance shot attempts. Not convinced that they have quality 3-point shooters so clog the lane, back off from their guards enticing them to take 3's, especially Beal. Offensively, run at every opportunity in transition beating their bigs up the court. Boston especially labors running the court so an up-tempo pace will limit her minutes.

just hope we aren't intimidated when they have their 6'5 and 6'7 players on the court at the same time

we have to rebound the hell out of the ball and avoid foul trouble.

the last thing we need to see is Caitlin & Monika on the bench with foul trouble

Agree. Sometimes those really tall defenders inside alter shots even when the player shooting isn’t being guarded by them.
