Iowa Women...To beat SoCar they must____

This team needs that Iowa spoiler attitude like we used to have in Football at Kinnick. I can vividly remember those night games against teams like Penn State, Michigan, and Ohio State who were all expecting to get the National Championship crown, but forgot about playing the game. There was that under the lights magic at Kinnick.

Although this in Hawkeye women’s basketball, not football and playing on a BB court in Dallas, we are, however, playing under the lights. And perhaps South Carolina’s undefeated record will fall like the previous football teams I mentioned.

Go Hawks.
Didn't Wisconsin take down an undefeated Kentucky to get to the national title game a few years ago?

The talent discrepancy between the two teams was deeper than it is between USC and Iowa. Iowa's a dog for a reason, but they definitely have a puncher's chance.

Ticket prices are crazy and on kcrg they showed that Iowas allotment is only 500 basically reserved the teams family and a select few.

Unfortunately, I think the best 2 teams remaining are playing Friday night.

Hopefully we don't see Kim Mulkey in the final.

CC has more star power by herself than all 4 of the remaining men's teams combined.

I guess it's good for CBB that there's only one quasi-blue blood in the FF, but the Iowa fan base is bigger than FAU, San Diego State, and Miami's combined.

And Iowa is an average P5 program.
That’s what’s so neat about it. If it was a bunch of blue bloods left in the men’s FF I would expect that. The fact that it’s schools that few picked and have rarely been to the FF says volumes about the Iowa fan base and the CC effect.

Get 1 of the bigs in foul trouble, let them take 3s if it means we can get some rebounds on defense, and I would try to slow the game down.

South Carolina leads the nation in bench scoring. I'm sure Bluder intents to go with a much deeper rotation. Also, as mention by others, if SC's big players get in deep, better to give them two than foul. If you give up position, nothing you can do anyway, foolish to foul.

She hasn't used her bench very much all year and I don't see that changing this game. I could see O'Grady, Molly and Affolter playing a minute here and there, but other than that, I don't see anyone else. She hasn't trusted her bench all year. I didn't list Stuelke because she is basically a 6th starter.

Nate Silver of 538 gives Iowa a 20% chance of beating USC.

Chance of winning National Championship:
65% South Carolina
15% LSU
12% Iowa
8% Virginia Tech

Start some trash talk about false eyelashes;). But seriously, get out and run. Keep a fast paced game and beat their bigs down the court. A set offense focusing and getting the ball down low after their defense has set up won't end well. If 3's are going down, the Hawks win.
I believe that’s the key to beating USC, turn it into a track meet. Up and down. Taller they are, the more weight they have. If Iowa gets down by 5-10. Keep the pace up. Something is bound to happen for good or bad.

USC will be as physical on CC as the stripes will allow. Which means she’ll get mugged while they are only sacrificing a few early fouls, if they are actually called, to get her off balance/timing and into her head. The other 4 on the court need to be HUUUUGE early on until they can get into a rhythm. Shoot lights out and hopefully our bigs step up and somewhat neutralize the paint. Big task, not impossible.

All three of our bigs will have to play a lot of minutes and play well, kinda like the boost Ogundele gave the men against Edey and Purdue in last year's BTT final.

Run, run and run some more.

Shoot lights out...like 1985 Villanova vs. Ewing and Georgetown level.

That's the blueprint.
D+50/50 balls, Attitude huh. And no cheap fouls.. Lady Hawks have attitude. The coach and staff has it already. Marshall bombs away, no hesitation. Stretch floor. Hawks waay tough!

We must obviously block out on the defensive end (presenting some semblance of rebounding) and limit their second-chance shot attempts. Not convinced that they have quality 3-point shooters so clog the lane, back off from their guards enticing them to take 3's, especially Beal. Offensively, run at every opportunity in transition beating their bigs up the court. Boston especially labors running the court so an up-tempo pace will limit her minutes.

From what little I have seen of SCar they are taller and can out jump the hawks so blocking out, as you mentioned, means really carving out space to get rebounds

To win, Iowa needs 3 things, in my opinion:

1. A monster game from Caitlin
2. Hit a lot of threes
3. Only lose the rebounding battle by 10ish.
Agree, BUT the last one is not probable and will be the hardest by far to obtain. They blister pretty much everybody on the boards. Not only is Boston 6'5" and huge, but the gal who spells her Cardoza is an athletic 6'7" and she just jumps over people. She'll be an AA next year as a starter. They also block like 20% of their opponents shots in the paint. This will be another rough game for Monica, and she'll have to hang tough...

Keep them off the glass is priority one.
They look beatable but no matter what it’s gonna be tough. In my mind this is the national championship game
That one sounds like great advice, BUT if you've watched them play absolutely impossible. We are not going to keep them off the glass. Not a chance in hell. We're going to have to push the pace and score, even on makes or what defensive boards we can grab, and then push. Create open three attempts, and drives in transition and try to draw fouls that way.

This will be the most watched womens game in history. NO ONE in the media will be missing this game. I scanned through numerous sports talk show the last couple of days and EVERY show was talking about Clarks Elite 8 game and Iowa's chances against SC. Korny and Wilbon, The Mike Greenburg show Get Up, All of ESPN shows. Win or lose, go in blazin ladies......

Biggest challenge is going to be matching SC’s physicality without fouling. When you’re smaller, the pushing back “looks” more noticeable even though it’s just countering the larger opponent. Refs will not give IA any breaks in this department.

Other big thing is going to be CC keeping her cool. She’s gonna be getting mugged the whole game and I doubt much if any of it will be called. CC does tend to get knocked off her game and lose focus when that happens.

If the Hawks shoot well and the game is called fairly, I would give Iowa about 10-20% chance of winning.

agreed.
If the refs actually call some fouls on SC we might have a punchers chance here.
It's weird actually talking about a F4 matchup lol. Have never done it in my long career of watching Hawk basketball.
If I had to wait for Fran I'd be pushing up daisies.

Almost forgot about the phony eyelashes! Does anyone on this team wear a sleeve on one leg and roll their pants up to their crotch? Angel Reese from LSU does this and it drives the wife bonkers - really comical!

Ya I don’t understand why they do this. Maybe she has bad spider/varicose veins on the one leg? 😂

I've wondered about rules for hair and nails. Saw a girl on the bench of LSU's opponent after the game (feathered suit game I think) with what I assumed were fake long nails, not sure if she played. Would it be a foul to hit an opponent with your pony tail?

We can learn a lot from the Maryland / SC game, where SC won by 11 points. SC currently is favored over Iowa by 12.

Maryland overall shot better from the field than SC (50% to 46%). Maryland shot better from three (7 of 14 for 50% vs 6-15 for 40% for SC).

2 key areas where Maryland lost the game and where Iowa must do better:

(1) Foul trouble. Maryland was called for 26 fouls to just 12 for SC. The impact on the game was huge:

* 2 key Maryland players sat during the 2nd quarter, where USC outscored MD 23-9.

* SC outscored MD by 6 at the FT line (16-26 for SC and 10-15 for MD).

Iowa simply cannot afford to get into foul trouble like Maryland did.

(2) Iowa cannot give up offensive rebounds like Maryland did vs SC and what Iowa did vs Colorado (had 21 offensive rebounds).

In the MD/SC game, look at how all of those offensive rebounds resulted in 12 more shot attempts than what MD had:

Offensive rebounds:
25
: SC
7: MD

Shot Attempts:
70
: SC.....(made 32 of them for 46%)
58: MD....(made 29 of them for 50%)

To win this game, Iowa needs their entire team to help CC in any way possible. Keep doing what they're doing but even better. That's all they have to do.

Honestly, we don't match USC at all outside of CC. They're deep, very deep, very very deep, big, and extremely talented. Our girls will have to play the game of their lives and CC just has to play the way she always does and we've got a chance. Somehow, I still feel like Iowa will be in this game until the end.

This IS the national championship game.

Boxing out, out-jumping, and out-hustling your opponent is certainly one way to compete in the rebounding battle.

But the other way is to make rebounds less statistically relevant by simply shooting an absurd percentage from the field.

They're going to get their share of offensive rebounds off their own misses. But if we don't miss, they can't get DEFENSIVE rebounds. That also keeps them from executing their transition game.

As several of us have already stated, it may take 70+ percent shooting overall...but it's possible. And frankly, its not only our best chance to win, but really probably our only chance to win.

Not sure how many times an Iowa women's team has shot 70% from the field in a game. That seems like a tall order.

To me, they need to:

* Shoot close to 50% overall and 40% from 3
* Limit SC's offensive rebounds to 15 for the game
* Keep the starting 5 out of foul trouble. If Lisa has to sit CC, Monika, etc. because of fouls, we're in big, big trouble.

Well, you don't get many offensive rebounds if you are shooting well! :)
