It has to be one of the worst jobs anywhere. Lots of travel to places like Iowa City in the Winter, run up and down the floor for a couple of hours and get screamed at for your trouble.
From the web -
NCAA women's basketball referees typically earn between $800 and $3,000 per game. The exact amount depends on the level of competition and the conference.
Explanation
- NCAA referees are paid per game, rather than on a salary.
- The amount they earn can vary significantly based on the number of games they officiate.
- In March Madness, referees earn $1,000 per game in the first rounds, $1,400 for the regional finals, and $2,000 for the Final Four.
- NCAA referees who officiate games in prestigious conferences, such as the Big Ten or SEC, tend to earn more
But if my math is right, there are 162 games (18 teams * 18 games/2).
Increase pay by $1,000 for each game for each ref - $1,000 * 3*162 = $486,000/18 teams = $27,000 per school.
Or, add in all the noncon games and the BTT - call it 400 games. That's a little less than $67,000 per school.
They can pay better if that would attract better officials.
