******UCLA vs Iowa Game Thread******

but had they gotten this call right, the game is still tied, it's Iowa's ball with 3.8 seconds left. Best case, they win in regulation. Worse case the game goes to OT.
I understand. Terrible non call. It hurt, but it’s not devastating to their season. Iowa wins their last 2 and at least 2 in the BTT, I bet they’ll get to a 5 or 6 seed, which will be a nice position to start the tournament. They can still control their destiny. And they know they can hang with anyone. USC, OSU, UCLA. For a team that was reeling a month ago, they’ve rebounded well.

You called it. Foul on Lucy after she's tripped by the UCLA screener and falls into the UCLA dribbler with 3.8 left. Helluva way to gift the game to UCLA. I posted it yesterday: If Iowa gets just a fair shake from the refs, they win. They didn't, and they didn't. Pretty simple.
Why is this a pattern though? I have been a Hawkeye fan for many years and it’s this SAME thing every year. When do you start saying hey maybe I will look into this a little?

Said the same thing to the wife during. KF took some really bad shots, and honestly Hannah was overwhelmed. Thought AOG handled her business. Still can't comprehend our more athletic 6'4" girl sitting on the bench the whole game, but hey, I'm not coaching the team...
For me the biggest failure of the game was how long it took to switch to a zone so as to not let betts basically play 5th grade ball where an early bloomer is just bigger than everyone else and can score at will one on one by the basket. By the time we made the switch the lead was gone.

I saw a UCONN fan goading Iowa fans on Twitter. They are still bitter 😂 was that the fan base Fran that attacked Gabbie Marshall to the point she had to delete her account… I don’t have near the “searching chops” that you do, but I’m pretty sure it was 🤷‍♂️

i can't remember the details but social media gets crazy, especially when "fans" go after players

It's interesting that Jan was clearly less forgiving about losing this game. She expected to win and in the postgame she explained why they didn't help that cause.

Hopefully they get the issues fixed and keep improving.

I think the only way to fix officiating is with better officials. The only way to get better officials is with training and money.

B1G women's BB has become BIG. Fix it!

Right now demand >>>>>>>> supply

I don't know many people who are interested in doing the job, even at the pee wee level. Hell, I have seen volunteer home plate umps, in little league games, getting screamed at because of their strike zone.

Maybe higher pay will help, but now a days, if you make a bad call that costs a team, someone is gonna find where you live and work and make life hell. Remember what Kentucky fans did to that one official after an NCAA Tournament loss? They all went to his business page and gave him 1 star reviews and wrote ridiculous comments.

gosh, you learn that at basketball camp at a very YOUNG age

at this level, you'd think they'd be automatic in using their left hand on a left handed lay up

It drives me nuts to watch players including W players do this. Syd and Kylie usually use their left hand on the left side and I've notice a couple times when Kylie has had a run out, she veers to the right side so she can shoot it on the right side with her natural hand.

Just rewatched Lucy’s foul. Horrendous call. Not even house league refs should make that call. Clear trip by UCLA player. My guess is Beth gets a call by Tuesday from league office saying, oops, we messed the call up but the loss still stands.

The way the rest of the game was called how could you expect anything else but this call.

Who didn't think after Lucy tied it up the officials would affect the end of the game.

Good. That’s how she should look at it. And how the team should look at it. Be pissed.

My point is that it doesn’t kill them, so just keep looking forward. They’ve proven they can do it if they keep their focus.

Against better teams you just have smaller margins of error. Bad shots, bad possessions against UCLA can’t happen. At least they need to be limited, and not at crucial times.

Bingo…thought we had a better than punchers chance. I don’t know if they’re gonna get it figured out this year or not. But boy if they do it might be a breathtaking ride.

CC routinely uses her right and I’d say she’s one of the most skilled basketball players in the history of the game. In fact, I’ve seen rival critics. Try to use it as an example against her.

i have made this observation before. It is one of the few things I am knowledgeable enough on to criticize when it comes to CC. And with that being said, it does not matter 99.9% of the time for her.

It has to be one of the worst jobs anywhere. Lots of travel to places like Iowa City in the Winter, run up and down the floor for a couple of hours and get screamed at for your trouble.

From the web -

NCAA women's basketball referees typically earn between $800 and $3,000 per game. The exact amount depends on the level of competition and the conference.

Explanation

  • NCAA referees are paid per game, rather than on a salary.
  • The amount they earn can vary significantly based on the number of games they officiate.
  • In March Madness, referees earn $1,000 per game in the first rounds, $1,400 for the regional finals, and $2,000 for the Final Four.
  • NCAA referees who officiate games in prestigious conferences, such as the Big Ten or SEC, tend to earn more

But if my math is right, there are 162 games (18 teams * 18 games/2).

Increase pay by $1,000 for each game for each ref - $1,000 * 3*162 = $486,000/18 teams = $27,000 per school.

Or, add in all the noncon games and the BTT - call it 400 games. That's a little less than $67,000 per school.

They can pay better if that would attract better officials.

Honest question, should they allow full replay challenge in last 2 minutes? If they replay it, clearly a trip/illegal screen called. You’d get maybe 1 challenge per 1 games since most not close enough to matter.

Rewatch:
If Lucy Olsen is even half on her game throughout (or especially in the 1st and 4th quarter), Hawkeyes win this one without any drama. Just wasn't her day. Certainly there are other factors involved, but Olsen has games where she makes at least five more from the same shot selection. Difference of 10-15 points. That's really close to having this team winning elite basketball games.

UCLA made critical shots in the 4th. Iowa didn't.

They can review who touched the ball last on out of bounds plays and they can review the damn clock to see it there is 1.2 or 1.1 left, so yeah, what's another 1 minute delay in my life.

While this is a true statement, you could say that about most games. If only so and so had done this. The thing is we WERE in a position to win the game late, and had numerous really bad calls (that foul on Olsen being the capper). There were others. Just a very poorly officiated game. (Whats new right)...

and this is a just a side gig for these officials. they have full time jobs somewhere else in the country.

I know the games are long enough anyway so I shouldn't be wanting more delay. But, they could have the challenges in the last minute or two and compensate for that by either stopping the TOs in the last minute to get the ball in forecourt, or keep that and make the TOs 30 seconds, or no seconds at all. Where there's a will...................

i still don't get why 6'4 Ava Heiden didn't get 1 minute of playing time

Not sure, but my belief is, she would have been abused. She’s athletic, but not very physical. Betts was going to get her average, we needed to keep everyone else down & score. We came up short on the last

The officials for the game were:
  • Felicia Grinter
  • Julie Krommenhoek
  • Michael McConnell

Has any women's official gotten well known because of their calls or antics? Example: TV Teddy (Ted Valentine). There are so many more examples on the men's side, of course.

Whatever happened to the officials for the 2023 National Championship game? They were awful but I couldn't tell you their names. I think they were all female, though LOL

Do you remember the official that correctly called the moving screen against UConn last year? Well I bet UConn fans remember :D

Well she certainly abused Stuelke, theres no doubt about that, and frankly I think Heiden is way more "physical" that AOG who is probably a great young lady, (and smart as hell, she's an engineering major), but she soft as milk toast. Did she have a rebound yesterday? I'd say the main reason "the others" got theirs in the 2nd half was because we started double and triple teaming Betts on the block when she caught the ball which led to kick out to open shooters. Jan went to this because we could not defend Betts in the 1st half. She'd have had 20 in the first in she hadn't sat out the last 6 minutes of the half with her 2nd foul.

Well, I’m gonna say it like this… I’m super impressed with Jan despite her critics. And if she didn’t play her, there’s a reason why 🤷‍♂️ that’s all I need.

I’m going to add… It’s pretty rare for me to wonder why a coach didn’t play someone. I’m very much in the camp. This is who we’re playing with. Let’s get after it.

As crazy as it sounds, I'm not trying to be critical of Jan for the most part. (Yes I know its her decision). I think she's done a pretty decent job overall in her new role. The Heiden thing just bugs me. She's the highest rated post we've ever recruited. You can see things WHEN she plays. I've said all year she should have been playing more to be prepared for EXACTLY a game like yesterday, and yes, I'll die on that hill. Her not being prepped to lend a hand for games like this one was a screw up.....

I get it, but I’ve not been in that camp. We started playing better as a team when our rotation got shorted. I’m not sure that is even debatable.

I agree with that. BUT, we have no idea how we be playing had Heiden been moved into AOG's role. Addie's been scoring 10 or 12 points, but she has a total non factor on the glass, (total), and a sub par defender. Heiden played about 8 minutes a couple of games ago when the bigs got in foul trouble and had 6 points and some boards. Is what it is, and the coaches decided. Just think they left some fuel in the tank on that decision.

Iowa and coaches did everything right but put the ball through the basket when it mattered. You have to make 4th quarter chances. They did that vs. USC.

* Though I'm definitely not on board with the final inbound strategy with 4 seconds to shoot.

Yep, but when she got the ball, she had no other option. 5 guards on the floor might have been better. No guarantees.
I felt she could have passed to Stuelke under the basket. But I could be wrong, perhaps Betts was close to the passing lane, one hesitation and the path was gone.
