1. Iowa's OLine play needs a lot of work. Welsh had some major whiffs, and CJ was sacked way too many times against such a poor defense. Thank goodness CJ doesn't get happy feet after getting drilled like Jake did last year, or we might not have won this game.

2. Purdue did not fear King at all, and actually threw at him. Prior to this game, it seemed like teams shied away from King's side of the field. This week, they attacked him, and King got burned quite a few times. That Yancey WR made him look like more like a 6th round draft pick.

3. We had another dominant first half where we could run at will...then we took the foot off the gas let them back into it. I'm pretty sure Daniels got dinged up after his second touchdown, and Wadley did too. Teams are adjusting to what we do at halftime.

4. Old Kirk is creeping back. We got the ball back leading 20-10 before halftime with 20 seconds left to play, two timeouts, and the ball at the 35. Rather than wing it down the field and let our HUGE legged kicker attempt a field goal, we took a knee. This is something we would have done last year...but i thought we had new Kirk at the helm. Close games are won and lost by 3 or 7 points that we left on the field there.

5. Our DL was majorly gassed and not real athletic. Purdue's QB had all day long to pick apart our defense, and we never really even hit the QB. Virtually no blitzing and no raider package. Very little substitution til the 4th quarter when the game was pretty much out of reach. Thus, on 3rd and 4th and long, they had all day to find open WRs and convert.

6. CJ is definitely a gamer. His legs alone kept us alive in this game when no WRs could get open. Having a QB who can scramble for 5 yards rather than take a sack is priceless and something we havent had since Brad Banks.

7. Koehn has missed more extra points than most kickers in the CIML. I mean seriously. The guy has all the talent in the world, but must have a mental issue. The special teams coach needs to work with him asap on his mental game. We are going to need every single point in the Big 10 championship game.

8. Krieger-Kobel is a stud! He has more yards after catch than anyone since Clark. He makes CJ look good, snagging closely contended passes, breaking tackles, and gaining major YAC.

what a buffoon. Enlightening stuff like this:

"Teams are adjusting to Iowa at halftime"

How exactly did we take our foot off the gas? Was this demonstrated in the play calling?

I would have liked to see Iowa take a shot before half, but i can understand how pressing in the cold and wind might sway the decision. Without the turnover in the first half, the game never gets close.

For as many plays as King might have missed, he also almost had three picks. He was looking to make a play, and he has shown he can do that, but sometimes that aggression can bite back. He's doing fine-- I hope Armstrong throws his way.

The other negative things are a concern going into these next games, and I certainly hope they are working on them. Nothing wrong with noting some weaknesses. If Iowa can win the turnover ratio, play clean, and play well in all phases, they can get to 12-0 Friday.

If you have to put your screen name in the thread title then you either are trolling too hard or truly have insecurity issues. Either case is pathetic at best.

[Reminds me of George Costanza referring to himself in the third person... after he stole the idea from Jimmy!]

Left points on the field? Took our foot off the gas? Are you serious?

Purdue has coaches and players too, but we won the game by 20. Yet, the coaches f'ed up.

In defense of "iowalaw" .....I think that is a fair assessment. No team in the country goes without constructive criticism....even by their own fans.
If there is NO room for improvement....please explain.

A turnover could have easily given Purdue 3 or 7 points. You can't bitch about the Oline (point #1) and then turn around and claim IA could have easily moved the ball 40+ yards in less than a minute. Quit being a troll.

The wind played a huge factor at the end of the first half. It was affecting CJB's passing and it would have required Iowa getting to at least the 25 yard line to have a realistic chance for a FG. I had no problem with KF electing to take a knee and go into halftime up 10 points.

There is no time for excruses.

Would everyone honestly be happier if we dominated the whole game? Never being challenged? I admit that some of our flaws are concerning down the road, but I don't think it's all bad to have a team challenge us and give our team some things to work on for next game. If we never get challenged, we might not be prepared for a better team down the road

Ol'Hawktimus believes that you are reading into everything a bit too simply. King was the victim of soft coverage at times. He did get a bit burnt the longer play on the sideline, but I didn't recall any other plays.

Taking a knee was the right call. We needed 35 yards in 20 seconds with no timeout. Definitely not worth it passing into the wind. My bigger issue was not going for 2 when we scored the last touchdown. Yes highly unlikely they score 3 touchdowns but not impossible, why not go for 2?

Even for this witless poseur poster, points 1-4 are breathtakingly obtuse.

A charitable critic of this legal beagle, taking into consideration that some are less cerebrally equipped than others, might forgive him for not grasping the subtleties of elite offensive line play or the transcendent value of King's defensive élan, but as every Iowa farm boy knows, even cows understand a cold hard wind.

revkev thinks...that Indiana, Purdue and Minnesota are pretty good teams...they are not pushovers...thus, those games were a struggle to win...and, Iowa is 11-0 but I doubt many on this board think Iowa is a dominant team...it is not... Just win, baby.

I would absolutely love to see Iowa crush Nebraska...revkev wonders why the point spread is Iowa -1 to -2...to win...hmmmmm....

He was limping. Waved the coaches off more than once. It was clear he was to play soft coverage.

I'm always amazed at the consistent belief that the team has to win every drive....and not just the ball game.

I enjoy reading your posts and thoughts. Please argue 1 single point as outlined and described by "iowalaw" and tell him/her why any of the viewpoint is wrong.

(Pass protection has been the weaker of the two jobs by the OL throughout the year. Not much we can do though when they send more than we can block. Coaches do recognize that and look for the screens, TE tosses and other plays to use the D's aggressiveness against them. I just think we took a little longer on Saturday to do that. Against Pitt, they saw that was gonna be a problem and went to the screens and dump passes to Canzeri early and often.)

2. Purdue did not fear King at all, and actually threw at him. Prior to this game, it seemed like teams shied away from King's side of the field. This week, they attacked him, and King got burned quite a few times. That Yancey WR made him look like more like a 6th round draft pick.
(Good, maybe he'll stick around for another year and help us have a repeat season of success in 2016)

(Bwuah?......Really? Teams? Plural?........you, uh, you wanna re-think that? P.S. first time in school history scoring over 30 pts in 5 straight games. Scored 40 in each of the past two. Sounds like they've got our sh** figured out, man.)

4. Old Kirk is creeping back. We got the ball back leading 20-10 before halftime with 20 seconds left to play, two timeouts, and the ball at the 35. (No.)

(I think the coaches will admit that they may need to look at rotating guys a bit more to keep them fresh, because it was becoming evident that our DL was wearing down and just standing and hand-fighting, or going for broke and giving up the edge rather than trying to drive their guy back and collapse the pocket. They'll definitely need to have a better gameplan than bau against Nebraska and going forward because the competition only ramps up from here.
But, to say they didn't blitz and didn't utilize the raider means that you probably didn't watch the game, or at least watched it that closely. Could they do it more? Maybe. Depends on whether they feel it could be effective or not. I wouldn't be opposed to Iowa constantly rushing 5 on Friday.
F*** it, what's one less guy in coverage if we can't cover 5 with 8. Maybe we can get more pressure with 5 instead of 4. Who knows...)

6. CJ is definitely a gamer. His legs alone kept us alive in this game when no WRs could get open. Having a QB who can scramble for 5 yards rather than take a sack is priceless and something we havent had since Brad Banks.

(Most all his kicks are sky-rockets and usually strong drifting right. The first was blocked, so see below, but he's missed a few just pushing the damn ball hard right. It's like a golfer who can crush the ball, but doesn't get all the way through. So while he hits it 325 yds, it also ends up 2 fareways off to the right.......o_O)

8. Krieger-Coble is a stud! He has more yards after catch than anyone since Clark. He makes CJ look good, snagging closely contended passes, breaking tackles, and gaining major YAC.
(He is making me eat crow for sure. I've been leery of him ever since the infamous onside kick against Central Michigan that he dove away from....But the past is in the past and he's having a terrific senior season. I just hope some other guys round into form by their senior seasons like he did.)

Okay, I'll give a quick criticism of the team. Can we please change the way we block on all PATs? It apparently is not illegal for the defenders to jump right over our blockers, because that's basically what happened on the blocked PAT. If it is illegal, the refs aren't calling it, and I've lost track of how many times the middle defenders just leap right over our front three guys who drop low (obviously to get leverage- low man wins...). Teams have decided they're not even gonna deal with that, and just go right over the top.

Time to fix that.....

It's possible they wanted Koehn to go out and actually make an extra point to give him some confidence going into the next game.

It's also possible that they didn't put much thought into it and just went for 1 by default.

Did you actually watch the game? We got up 20-0 and protected the lead. Old Kirk. Quit trying to score, prevent defense, prevent offense. Been watching it for years.

We played relatively soft coverage most of the game, and the defense forced three 4th downs on Purdue's touchdown drives. Our offense stalled in the middle of the game largely because of sacks and the fumble resulting in a turnover. We didn't have a single drive (to my knowledge) that didn't have at least 1 passing attempt.

It's easy to look at the results (Iowa giving up 13 unanswered points) and say that the coaches "let up off the gas" but in order to make that old cliche true you need to actually look at the play calling and compare whether we were more or less aggressive.

Critiquing play calling should go beyond "good result, good play call; bad result, bad play call" because there is much more nuance to the game than that.

I opened this thread knowing the dumpster fire this thread would be. Any time iowalaw posts something it's usually garbage and it's entertaining reading the other posters light his post on fire.

Betting spreads are designed to get people to bet. Nothing more. Read into it however you like though.

I'm not sure why people are getting all defensive. It's just constructive criticism. It's not like he's saying Iowa is a terrible team.
