Where did this idea originate? For years and years I have heard Iowa fans refer to this game as Iowa State's Super Bowl. That the Clones circle this game on their calendar and get up for this one like no other on their schedule. And they usually do as the effort and results of this game fly in the face of what happens to them in the rest of their season. Their fans rejoice and the season is a success as long as they can win this game.

So now I hear all this talk from ISU fans about this being Iowa's Super Bowl. How f'ing dumb is that? To me, and most every other Iowa fan I know, this game is one of the least favorite games on the schedule. It's a no-win situation. We should win this game every year, and if we don't the rest of the country laughs because we didn't beat one of the worst programs in CFB history.

Where did this "Iowa's Super Bowl" mantra from ISU fans come from? Is this a lame attempt to project their own feelings back on Iowa? Is this supposed to be some sort of excuse for when the Clones lose to Iowa? That we somehow tried harder in this game. That our fans somehow want this one more? We want to win because we don't want to feel embarrassed, that's about it.

Hey Clones, this game is so insignificant to Iowa fans that a large portion of our fan base loathes even having to play you Clowns. Because of you we don't get to enjoy playing other P5 schools that would enhance and increase our SOS. Because of you we don't get to play a series against Notre Dame at Soldier Field. Because of you we are stuck with a lackluster non-conference schedule. You are big pimple on our schedule EVERY SINGLE YEAR. A zit we pop but you just keep coming back EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Just go away. We don't want to see you anymore.

If that is a "Super Bowl" game you guys are F'ed in the head.

To me this is not just another game. Purdue and Northwestern are just another game. I wouldn't say it's Iowa's Super Bowl. The bowl game is our superbowl. ISU would understand if they went to more bowl games.

Every B1G game is more important than this game. Yes, even against Rutgers when the Hawks play them.
The goal of the season is to get to the B1G champ game. The result of the game against isu has no bearing on that.

'clone fan is gonna be 'clone fan. It matters not what they "think"

Agree completely. I certainly want to win, and bragging rights are nice, but seasons are remembered by how we succeed (or not) in the conference. A win vs ISU won't count any more toward that goal than the win over NIU.

Iowa State doesn't have an original thought in their bones. ANF/AHF, Kids Captain to name a few.

A bird for a mascot even though a bird has nothing to do with a Cyclone. Herky predates Cy by 6 years, FYI. 1948 Herky. 1954 Cy.

So try again Clones.

Yeah, the Cyclones are nothing but a mimic. If you've had a little brother or small children you know that the younger brother always imitates his older sibling. It's cute to watch as a parent. Eventually it gets very annoying to older brother and results in a beatdown. So many similarities to how the Clones act.

This game was considered ISU's Super Bowl because they didn't have a chance to beat the B12 contenders, and the Iowa has was really important. The players were pumped, and often played one of the best games, if not THE best game of the season, against the Hawks.

After 2017, we can put that to rest IMO. ISU is going to go into every game on their schedule believing they have a chance to win - and they should.

This is a big game for the Hawks, but it's not the Super Bowl.

ISU fans saying that are merely trolling. It’s, “I know you are but what am I,” in regard to the truth. They’re children who like to think that beating them represents an accomplishment of some acclaim. They know inside that it doesn’t and it never has. Beating ISU doesn’t advance our program, like a “Super Bowl” would. It only allows us some relief from those idiots and their ignorance. Beating Ohio State...Wisconsin...that’s a SB scenario for us. It means something.

To his credit, I really think Campbell takes a less Super Bowl approach to the game than his predecessors did (McCarney being #1 and Rhoads being #1a). I think he looks at the game more along the lines Kirk does - important rivalry yes, but not something you base the season off of. How long he keeps that approach is yet to be determined. With an AD like Pollard, it probably won't last long.

Their fans still treat it as a Super Bowl since they have no other rivalries and can only think about getting out from under Big Brother's shadow in the near future. We have some of those fans as well, but not near as prevalent.

Every year ISU sees Iowa as the Super Bowl. That's their big game, in week two or three. Except for rare seasons, very rare, bloody rare, don't even heat it rare, they have zero chance at a conference title. The last year they won a conference football title the Titanic hit an iceberg.

Guess you're too young to remember when ISU came out in jerseys that said "beat Iowa." I think that was Duncan.

If this game is our "Super Bowl," and not theirs, then why are they buying billboards in Eastern Iowa when they win? I've never heard of any Iowa billboards going up in Ames following our victories.

Earl Bruce, 1977. A couple of years before he left Ames to become head coach at Ohio State.

The last time ISU had a chance at a conference football title was under Bruce. 1976-1978 the Clones beat Nebraska once or twice, not Oklahoma. They were a very good football team. If Bruce had turned down the offer from Ohio State, his alma mater (snowballs' chance in hell) he just might have gone on to take the Cyclones to an Orange Bowl. Maybe not.

That was 40 years ago.

Ya, I love how Iowa fans love to say this is ISU's super bowl, a protective mechanism to rationalize if ISU does win the game. (10-10 over the last 20 years)

The reality is, Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz will both tell you this game is very important for state bragging rights and recruiting reasons. And it's a "trophy game" as well.

I know Iowa fans say we just compete for conference championships year in/year out and this game is not that important.

I have a question, when is the last time Iowa won an outright conference championship? Not a B1G West division title. All this talk of conference championships, it sounds like you're an Oklahoma, Alabama, or Ohio State? :)

Fixed your time frame to a more current one. To answer your last question...much more recently than 106 years ago.

It may be a years less than ISU. Perhaps even several decades less. Perhaps a more flattering comparison is out there? Top 20 finishes? Top 10 finishes? Bowl appearances? I guess water and enrollment are out there.

Both teams get up for this game, but only one team truly circles this game on the calendar and has a TOE countdown clock and it isn't the one in black and gold

You're probably right. At least until Hayden found his footing at Iowa. After that, it was cruise control set at stomp speed.

It's loser talk.

"We lost because the other team played so hard...like it was their Superbowl!! (Sniffle)"

Fry just had to show up most years to beat Iowa St by a million.

The Super Bowl thing takes place when Iowa would go on to have good years and Iowa St. would be a 3 win team. Its a rivalry game and it does mean something to the state but it is not our most important game. The other reason why this is happening is because Iowa State fans NEVER shut up about this game if they win. I haven't said boo to an Iowa St. fan after the current win streak. In fact I said Iowa St. looked way better even in a loss than most years while being sincere.

The super bowl thing also goes from the billboards in CR and the countdown clock until Iowa St plays Iowa in your facilities.

Also, does Iowa St. have any more rivalry trophies? We have 4, which is a little much, but 4.

ISU wanted a rivalry with Nebraska, but it never happened. Not from Nebraska's point of view. The Huskers were all about Oklahoma, then Missouri and Colorado, later Kansas State. Iowa State was a game on the schedule like Kansas or Oklahoma State.

No doubt the clones miss the Nebraska game. It was a rivalry to them at least. Probably cost them some money too. That's okay though, Iowa State vs. West Virginia, let loose the dogs!

The Iowa State dream is to beat Iowa then win as many conference games as they can.

"Hayden's Super Bowl". That might be the funniest thing I have seen yet. It was a guaranteed opportunity to have the second team in midway through the 3rd quarter and the third team in during the fourth quarter. Or kind of like two years ago.

Indeed. And give him a chance to ponder some things he'd been planning for Bo and Earle.

Your question of when has Iowa last won an outright conference title wouldn’t be so pathetic if isu has ever been able to win one of their own.

All I know is Cyclone fans and CF would be extinct without the Iowa game. There are more posts on CF after a Hawk loss than a Clone win. Now that is pathetic. I guess I look at this way. If we win I simply breathe a sigh of relief. No joy or celebration. Just a simple thank God I don't have to deal with Clone fans for another 365 days.

This is exactly how I feel. The good(ish?) news is that Iowa St. isn't helpless anymore so a loss wouldn't be quite so damaging other than listening to ISU fans on repeat for 365 days.

Yeah, that was the first game of the resumption of playing them. My bad. And bad to resume, IMO. So what if was 40 years ago.
