Iowa's Super Bowl???

Your question of when has Iowa last won an outright conference title wouldn’t be so pathetic if isu has ever been able to win one of their own.
Ya, just to be clear, I haven't been the one touting the ISU/Iowa game is not important and the only thing ISU cares about is conference championships. :) Care about both.

One finer point, ISU has had to play EVERY team in the conference EVERY year. . Iowa does not play Ohio State/Michigan EVERY year. For Iowa to win a conference championship, the stars need to align, good team, no injuries and a FAVORABLE schedule.

I cannot find an Iowa outright conference championship when they played Ohio State and Michigan in the same year. A good example is the 2002 team that shared the title with but did not play Ohio State, and then got lit up in the orange bowl by USC.

So isu fan finds the best tactic to slam Iowa is to squawk about something isu has never accomplished themselves. Still wonder why you are laughed at?

No disputing that Iowa gets a favorable schedule some years. I do have to ask what Iowa St.'s excuse is then for 2010 and prior? You've only played EVERY team the last 7 years and for however many years played in the worst division in major college football while not playing 3 teams in conference EVERY year. Heck, in 2009 Iowa St. didn't play Texas, Texas Tech, or Oklahoma, 3 of the 4 top teams in the Big 12 South and only 2 ranked teams in the South.

So the favorable schedule argument is completely valid, but as an Iowa St. fan you can't really bring it up for any discussions on seasons before 2010 because you look like a fool.

Listen you loser big brother. Little brother is finally grown up and thinks you should go down to hell. You are a narcissistic loser who lives in the past. Get over yourself. Although we would prefer we never see your loser face again but since the politicians are forcing us to play you we hope this game ends swiftly with no injuries and hopefully the generally despicable behavior in Iowa City is kept to minimum. Hawks win 73-3.

Where did this idea originate? For years and years I have heard Iowa fans refer to this game as Iowa State's Super Bowl. That the Clones circle this game on their calendar and get up for this one like no other on their schedule. And they usually do as the effort and results of this game fly in the face of what happens to them in the rest of their season. Their fans rejoice and the season is a success as long as they can win this game.

So now I hear all this talk from ISU fans about this being Iowa's Super Bowl. How f'ing dumb is that? To me, and most every other Iowa fan I know, this game is one of the least favorite games on the schedule. It's a no-win situation. We should win this game every year, and if we don't the rest of the country laughs because we didn't beat one of the worst programs in CFB history.

Where did this "Iowa's Super Bowl" mantra from ISU fans come from? Is this a lame attempt to project their own feelings back on Iowa? Is this supposed to be some sort of excuse for when the Clones lose to Iowa? That we somehow tried harder in this game. That our fans somehow want this one more? We want to win because we don't want to feel embarrassed, that's about it.

Hey Clones, this game is so insignificant to Iowa fans that a large portion of our fan base loathes even having to play you Clowns. Because of you we don't get to enjoy playing other P5 schools that would enhance and increase our SOS. Because of you we don't get to play a series against Notre Dame at Soldier Field. Because of you we are stuck with a lackluster non-conference schedule. You are big pimple on our schedule EVERY SINGLE YEAR. A zit we pop but you just keep coming back EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Just go away. We don't want to see you anymore.

If that is a "Super Bowl" game you guys are F'ed in the head.

Iowa fans tore down the goal post after the win in '77 after the series started up again...

odd that idiot big brother is carrying the goal posts up the stands. not sure what they were trying to accomplish there lol. i guess they didnt have a way to get it out shoot. the goal posts from danny macarney first win in ames in the donut bowl is at the bottom of lake laverne unless they pulled it out since then. now that is a real accomplishment. i guess engineers generally have better plans.

Ya, before the big 12 we played oklahoma, nebraska every year.

Im merely pointing out the irony that many think iowa is perennial conf champ contenders and the reality is they are not like an oklahoma, ohio st, alabama, etc. ;)

Eh I think more are pointing out that Iowa has a better chance to win the Big 10 most years than Iowa St. does the Big 12 most years, going forward and in the past.

Iowa St. had the exact same advantages for years that Iowa has now, and never took advantage of it. No sane fan thinks Iowa is close to Oklahoma, Ohio St., Bama, etc. but universally every college football fan thinks Iowa is closer to them than Iowa St. and it isn't even a question.

The best thing about this game is that it will be over after Saturday. And thinking Hawk fans will move on to much more relevant games coming up, starting in 2 weeks with the wisky matchup.

Doc - I couldn't agree more. Like I said above, this game brings me zero enjoyment even in victory just a sense of relief. Get it over with and hopefully win and move on. ISU will chirp the rest of the year on the game win or lose. If they win, imagine how bad they would have won if their game wasn't canceled. If they lose, the first game was canceled and it's our Super Bowl. I would be willing to bet, in the week leading up to their Okie game, there will be more posts on Iowa than Okie on CF.

Every year ISU sees Iowa as the Super Bowl. That's their big game, in week two or three. Except for rare seasons, very rare, bloody rare, don't even heat it rare, they have zero chance at a conference title. The last year they won a conference football title the Titanic hit an iceberg.
The truth is, ISU has no rivalry in the Big XII. Their only rival is Iowa. As for Iowa we have; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Illinois with the amount of Chicago kids that go to Iowa.

No matter how you slice and dice it this is a big game for both programs ... for the coaches, the players, and the fans. As a fan of 40 years ... I look least forward to this game ... simply because I get agitated by ISU fans if the Cyclones win.

I think ISU fans in general have a higher hate for Iowa ... The majority of my die-hard Cyclone friends "hate" Iowa ... Me? I'm a die hard Hawk ... I don't like ISU ... but I don't have the hate many of their fans have for the Hawks ...

It's a rivalry game ... it's a Super Bowl for the state ...

So, your evidence that this is Iowa's Super Bowl is fans tearing down the goalposts 41 years ago? It was a huge win that day because fans had zero expectations then and that was the high-water mark for ISU football for anyone breathing today. Earl Bruce had you guys respectable before he left for greener pastures. No Iowa fan has thought of ISU as the most important game on the schedule since you guys became "Finer with Criner." If I was picking the 50 biggest Hawkeye wins in my lifetime, there would not be a single ISU game on that list.

Well said.

It even has a pretty cool, and natural, origin story.

---

Before the 1959 match-up between the two schools, which took place in Ames, Iowa, field testing showed that the telephones the two schools used to communicate with their coaches in the coaches box were wired so that either school could hear what was happening on the other sideline. The problem was fixed before the game,[1]but neither of the two coaches knew that.

Northwestern Bell Telephone Company of Ames then decided to have a trophy made to commemorate the incident, and thus the Telephone Trophy was born.[3][4]

Of course the ISU game is important to Iowa. And of course Iowa wants to win it. This also applies to every other game on the schedule. An added emphasis "Super Bowl" type game for Iowa involves the likes of Wisconsin or Ohio State. Why? Because beating them represents a great accomplishment. It's a boost for the season. ISU folks will twist and turn this game in every way possible to make it look like it's huge for us. But you're missing the main ingredient: You're not a superior opponent.

Excellent summation, although I’d rather have a zit on my forehead than these guys on our schedule every year.

Well said. Fry was the one who circled this game and did everything he could to beat ISU. Maybe that's where the Superbowl thing started?

Not sure about "Super Bowl", but Fry has stated how this game was very important to him. He wanted to win and win big to keep ISU down. Not a bad strategy. Not as if there are lots of in state D1 caliber recruits to share. It's important to be seen as the big dog in the state to make it easier to grab those recruits.

KF has stated no game is more important than others and it keeps Iowa consistent I suppose. This probably why you see Iowa pull off an Ohio State win only to follow up with a loss to Purdue two weeks later.

Not sure how Campbell handles Iowa week, but my guess is he's more KF like than Fry/McCarney like. Just a hunch.

It's OK with us if you want to choose to not get excited for this game. In fact, you might as well all stay home instead of actually attending the game.

Ya, I think most ISU fans agree with hayden fry and kirk ferentz that this is a big game for 1) state bragging rights and 2) instate recruiting.

Trust me, its a bigger deal for ISU if we beat an Oklahoma, Texas or Nebraska (big 8), etc or a team ranked in Top 10. But we do take delight in beating Iowa and wiping that arrogant smirk off your face ;)

big brother is very narcissistic and generally likes living in the past.
and meanwhile waves to the kids in the hospital and gets all warm and fuzzy and then turns around and gets as drunk and disorderly as possible right in front of the kids for all to see.
they will smile and wave and then teach all the kids of future generations through their miserable examples how to behave when they grow up.
way to show a good example iowa city you are truly the cornerstone of the state of iowa.
just joking you arent.
and then iowa city has the arrogance to say that we big brother dont want to play little brother but little brother wants to play us so we have to because the politicians force our hand.
let me take that smug look off your face big brother. we dont want anything to do with you and would be elated with joy if we never had to see or speak with you ever again.

Iowa is to ISU as ISU is to UNI. Bottom line. Except, of course, for that fact that they've beaten you a few times. We're #1 in the state and always will be.

Probably a bigger game for ISU this year, especially if you don't reschedule the cancelled game. ISU has a tough schedule. If you don't beat Iowa can you get 6 wins?

This coming from a fan of a team that played in the pillow fight known as the big 12 north? Did ISU play every team then?

Lol. Yes...In 1979.

Fry's teams pretty much slept walked through Iowa State from 1983 on. Rest assured, Iowa State quickly became an opponent Fry didn't worry about.

To their credit, Iowa State finally surpassed Rick Stanzi in number of bowl wins. So, yay them for that.

And In 7 short years, post-Stanzi Iowa is already 33% of the way to equaling Stanzi-Iowa.

Our super bowl is Wisconsin, and rightfully so as its chief rival in the West. We’re 1-4 post 2009.
