Irish Whiskey

Not a huge fan. Sometimes a shot of Jameson. Or, Jameson with cranberry.

What's your go to?

I have two full size five level bookcases full of various liquors, liqueurs and mixers in my home “full bar” and probably easily have 50-70 whiskeys of types with about half in rotation and half in permanent replacement cycle.

For Irish whiskey, I only have two in permanent replacement cycle which are Power’s Gold Label as a “daily drinker” and Redbreast 18. In rotation I’ve only currently got Power’s Three Swallows and Jameson Stout. Irish whiskeys are definitely my least favorite major category unless you count Indian and Chinese whiskies.

In my permanent replacement cycle I have:

Bourbon and American corn whiskies: Old Crow, Mellow Corn (a cheap but fantastic shooter and mixer that is not technically a bourbon as it uses reused barrels to cut down on the vanillin’s that overpower the corn flavor which is why I had to change this category from just bourbon), George Dickel White Corn Whiskey, King’s Family American Blended, Wild Turkey 101, Maker’s Mark 46, Jack Daniels Bottled in Bond, Jack Daniels Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve, Eagle Rare, Eight Shires Colonial Bourbon, St Augustine Distillery Double Cask, DV8 5 Grain Bourbon, E.H. Taylor Small Batch, Bulleit Frontier, Knob Creek 12 year, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Henry McKenna 10 Year Single Barrel, and George Dickel 15 Year Single Barrel. I used to keep Stagg Jr on permanent rotation but I’ve had some difficulty finding it recently.

Scotch: Johnnie Walker Swing, The Black Grouse/Famous Grouse Smoky Black, Monkey Shoulder, Talisker 10, Glenmorangie 10 year, Auchentoshan American Oak, Chivas Regal 13 Sherry Cask, Ardberg An Oa, The Glenrothes 12 year, Glenfiddich 12 year, Highland Park Viking Honor 12 year, Johnnie Walker Green, The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 year, Oban 14 year, Springbank 15 year, Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or/Glenmorangie The Nectar 16 Year, Auchentoshan 18 year, Highland Park Viking Pride 18 year, Johnnie Walker Blue and Chivas Regal 25 year. If you know your Scotches you’ll see that I have a nice collection of blended scotches plus single malts from every region including my favorite Speyside as well as Highlands, Lowlands, Campbelton, Orkney, Skye and Islay.

Rye Whiskies: Bulleit Rye, High West Double Rye, Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye, Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye, and Wild Buck American Rye.

Japanese: Suntory Toki, Akashi White Oak, Kanekou Okinawa, Nikka Coffey Grain, Suntory Hibiki Japanese Harmony, Nikka Yoichi, Yamato Mizunara Oak Cask Takeda Shingen (for the neat bottle more so than the whiskey), Yamazaki 12 year and Suntory Hibiki 17 year. There’s not too many Japanese whiskies of worth near the bottom shelf, the only three I consider both good and reasonably priced are Toki, Akashi White Oak and Nikka Coffey. But on the high end they have some amazing whiskies.

Canadian: Forty Creek Confederation Oak, Crown Royal XO, JP Wiser’s 18 year, and Crown Royal 18 year.

Impressive. Ever try courage and conviction American single malt?

I haven’t come across it. The part of Virginia it’s located in is not anywhere I usually go when visiting Virginia. I usually go to 1) The Tidewater area as I’m a Bill and Mary grad plus that’s the area with the most to do anyways, 2) Shenandoah Valley to Fredericksburg as I have extended family in the greater Front Royal area plus it’s a lovely area with a ton of wineries, cideries, breweries and three distilleries including two that make pretty good bourbons in Copper Fox (which also has a location in Williamsburg) and River Hill. Copper Fox makes one pretty unique bourbon as they mature it in chestnut wood but I don’t include it in my permanent rotation although right now it’s on my visitor list.
