I just don't think it's a significant negative. Could be a negative, but not something that couldn't be overcome.

Sort of like Obama being black. People were saying the same thing about being black. And it probably was a negative. (possibility it wasn't, technically) But it didn't prove to be one that couldn't be overcome easily enough with an otherwise good candidate.

Size of effect.
I think there was a tipping point with Obama. It’s a negative until masses actually start to realize that there’s a chance and then in the end I think it became a positive down the stretch. Hard to picture a gay candidate getting to that level of positive down the stretch, but as the father of a gay son, I really hope I’m wrong or that we get there. Not that I think he’d be POTUS, but I’m all for knocking down barriers.

Well, if you were to think about the status of black women in America given a lot of the rhetoric read on the topic of black women, you'd have a hard time believing that a black woman could ever be a powerful billionaire in America.

But then there's Oprah, worth 2.5B.

I think we spend so much time on thinking about some of these social problems that we lose track of what is actually possible.

I think the left struggles with this.

Excellent point there. We have seen gay and even trans candidates elected to national office, so there are possibilities. Would certainly have to be someone with much charisma and likely a big grassroots following for sure.

Spinning off another thread.. curious what people think?

Is a gay candidate electable?

I say no, unfortunately. Still too many people who are repulsed by anything or anyone LGBTQ.

Thoughts?
I voted YES because it could happen sometime in the future. Personnally I think Mayor Pete B. is so much smarter than most all senators and House Reps. He is smarter and very articulate beyond many career civil servant workers.

I am not saying he would win now but someone like him or him in the future.

And If Trump and the Repubs **** this term up really bad then about any Dem will win in 2028

And there could be total dislike of one party by the masses which could open up the Prez office for many different people.

I think a large part of it is matchups. Of course America is “ready” for a female POTUS, or a LGBT POTUS, just like they were “ready” for a POC.

Trump was an “X” factor that emboldened bigotry. Obama would have lost to Trump, I believe.

We've been told here that a big reason Harris lost was due to the Democrats support of LGBTQ rights and policies. If true, and that was a large part of why America elected the first convicted felon president, the answer to the question posed in the OP is clear.
You are picking your words here. No issue with support but the policies were a factor.

Lindsay Graham. End of discussion.

Perhaps, a “reformed “ gay could pull it off? Just for the campaign.

Kamala Harris got 75,017,613 votes. Plenty of Americans voted for a woman.

Trump won by less than 2%.
And Hillary actually got 2% plus more actual votes than Trump. Just the fluke of the electoral college prevented this from already happening.

Oh. Gosh I was “told” the biggest reason was a majority of voters rejected the open borders- and thought the Democratic candidate wouldn’t address it.
That was followed closely by an overall dissatisfaction with economic issues like gas (and EGGS)
Hmm.

You think Graham is electable for president? No way.
I wouldn’t vote for him, but it’s more to do with his political views on some issues over time.
If by chance he was elected though, he might do an okay job. He knows where a whole lot of bodies are buried, politically speaking.

Ignoring the snark in your post, he told people what they wanted to hear even tho it was mostly lies. But, most will never admit it.

Trump was able to collect single issue voters. Angry about abortion. Angry about the border. Angry about losing in 2020. Angry about American moving away from white male dominance. Angry about trans and social issues. Angry about the COVID recovery.

And she still lost by .5% . with some bad policy positions, bad messaging by the party, campaign of 100 days vs 4 years, and lack of ability to speak to the economic issues.

No. He’s gay and gets re-elected ALL THE TIME! Folks won’t say he is, unless he’s not around.

I’m guessing he spews enough of what his constituents believe to continue getting elected. That’s the bottom line. Say the popular thing. And repeat it, brainwashing style.
