I am not very knowledgeable about recruiting so please give an analysis of how the 2 classes compare. Seems like ISU has improved . Is this correct? TIA

ISU did have a great year recruiting.

They got Ian Parker and Gavin Dewitt for 125/133. Iowa landed two better wrestlers in Jack Wagner and Brock Rathbun for 125/133.

ISU also got Kanen Storr who is a great recruit, but Iowa got Carter Happel who is better 141.

ISU got Trey Meyer who is a great recruit but Kaleb Young will be better at 174 IMO.

ISU got a great 285 in Gannon Gremmel but Iowa has Aaron Bradley coming in who will also be a better 285.

Both schools did get Monster recruits in Sammy Colbray ISU and Alex Marinelli Iowa, but I believe Iowa got a better one who will score more points in his career.

In conclusion ISU had there best year in recruiting since Jackson took over, but Iowa pretty much one upped them on every front.

I'm a hawk through and through but I don't think your even close on this one.
Throw Dewitt out. Wagner and Rathbum better then Ian Parker? no chance http://www.flowrestling.org/rankings/high-school/weight/126

Happpel has had rough year. Kanen Storr literally wrestles everywhere and has been impressive. http://www.flowrestling.org/rankings/high-school/weight/138

Young over Meyer absolutely. I think he ends up at 174 and has a great career.

Bradley over Gremmel at this point? interesting. I would have loved to have Gremmel.

Marinelli is light years ahead of Colbray. I don't think Colbray finds a lot of success in college. If you've ever watched paint dry it's comparable to watching him.

did you really just throw flo rankings at me to prove that Parker and Storr are better then Wagner and Happel. Wow.

Just a point of reference. You said with authority that was the case which it's not. There's a case where you could see Happel better then Storr. Wagner better then Parker? no. Bradley better then anyone? How could anyone possibly know that. I sure hope so. We didn't get any of the three Iowa HWTS this year so I hope your expertise is right.

Granted it was 2 years ago and in freestyle but Wagner TF Parker in the first period. Is Wagner better still? I believe so but you are making it sound like there in no way Wagner could beat Parker, but I'm telling you it has happened and will happen again.

Not sure but one of the last times we saw Bradley wrestle was at the Dapper Dan where he beat Brooks Black. He will now have a year and a half to get back into wrestling form. At that time yes I believe with the coaches and training partners in the Iowa room ( Stoll, Telford, Berhow) you will see Bradley and better wrestler then Gremmel.

geez, ed. what's wrong with flo rankings?
I didn't say there is anything wrong with ur rankings. They are great rankings, but thats what they are rankings. There is a reason they get changed every week because any given match a higher ranked guy can be beat.

PS I love Flo! Keep up the good work!

yeah, three years ago. Why don't we just slide him above Black in the rankings right now. We have no idea what to expect. I hope we can get another HWT in the room in the next class or two.

What I'm saying is our recruiting class is okay. That only ones I think were big hits in 2016 will be Mar. and Young. You made it out to be that our recruits are head and shoulders above theirs which is not the case.

Parker has placed at about every big national tournament out there. He has improved leaps and bounds since then. He got 4th at Junior Nationals where he beat a pretty good kid named Austin Gomez. Zero chance he can even make that a match a few years ago.

Your making me defend ISU which I don't like. I guess Nebraska week has just got the best of me. You know the whole "we're the best ever every year."

geez, ed. what's wrong with flo rankings?
umm see Jimmy Gulbon's preseason rank
Ranked #1
wins vs top 10 ranked wrestlers at the weight .... 0
college tournament wins... 0
loses in march last year... 5
different wrestlers to beat him in March last year ...5
other ranking services ranking him in the top 3 ...0
non aas to beat him in the big ten tourny last year ..2 (also lost to the guy that got 7th)
so is it safe to say flo had a tiny reach to get him to 1...
fyi cp said on flo radio that he ranked him there cause he "liked" him, and because of psu's ability to figure things out in March.. they must have forgotten to "figure" stuff out the last two March's for him..
So what is wrong with flo rankings you ask?
here is the short answer .. You guys have a hard time deciding if you are ranking, predicting, or a combination of the two

friendly discussion is what this boards for. Unfortunatly sometimes posters take it way beyond that. I hear what ur saying and understand why ur saying it. I'm just gonna agree to disagree. Hopefully in the end I'm right lol! Go Hawks!

We're talking about rankings right? For a second there I thought u were mad about something that matters. These attacks at Willie and CP on this board need to stop. Just makes us look bad.

a question was asked ... I answered it.. not a personal attack... and if you don't think rankings matter, maybe you should go watch the world championships sometime... He asked what is wrong with flo rankings? I assume he wanted an answer

I hope your right too! I'm just ready for a win on Friday. It's tough to live in this ugly red state with this game coming up Friday. I'm with you on Flo too. They rock and occupy a good hour of my day.

I watch the world championships. How does that make Flo high school rankings matter any more to anybody? Whether you're all in on the Flo rankings or totally dismiss them, what is the correlation with their meaning or lack there of to you and the world championships?

ask me again in 4 or 5 years I will have an answer, I know I. st. has a pretty good class coming in. if iowas is better that's good.

ISU has definitely elevated their recruiting. Got some really good guys. But when you start as low as ISU was recently... there's only one way to go. I hope very soon Iowa fans can once again get excited for the Iowa/ISU dual.

You literally just made that up.

Not an ideal game plan when the podcast remains up and available for you or anyone who cares to hear how you completely made this up.

Busted. 141 is definitely the hardest weight to rank but jimmy g had no business being there. Let's hope our senior has something to say about it when the time comes.

Hr must be rocking If the flo guys are checking out our board.

If your reading this sign a contract with Iowa and not ok state so we can view all matches:)

Jmho... ISU has turned things up a notch, getting some promising talent (Colbray), but Iowa still comfortably leads them.

I tend to look more at top #1 or 2 at their weight class and top 10 or 20 p4p, as I think those tend to yield more team points at ncaa tournament.

Not to hijack the thread, and beating ISU is nice, but the real target is PSU. For many years now, they've been landing the bluest of the blue chip prospects... Megaludis, Guilibon, Retherford, Taylor, Ruth, and more recently Nickal, Nolf, Neville, Joseph. Now they just got Hall (probably #1 p4P)

Iowa has a potential superstar in Alex Marinelli in that elite group. Kemerer and Mejia are a couple of others. But overall, Iowa has some catching up to do in the recruiting process vs PSU.

Call me crazy but I want that dual to be a big deal. When I was a kid and even older that was the biggest thing on iptv. I would much rather have a sell out crowd vs isu then penn state. There is a lot of parity now. I'd much rather have our rivals be uni or isu then tosu or penn state.

Don't forget Suriano and Manville. Man, that PSU lineup is scary..

Ha! I remember listening to that podcast and when I read silicone's post, I was thinking I don't remember CP saying that, but thought maybe I missed it as I was listening to it while I was driving. I was going to listen to again, but I guess I don't have to. Lots of parity at 141 and likely will be a weight where the rankings shift drastically week to week. If Brody can hold the weight, he will certainly be a factor come March

You're crazy.;)

I, too, remember the days of packed houses for Iowa-ISU. While those big meets from the 70's and 80's were extremely exciting, I'd still rather see the Hawks dominate ISU annually. If I had to choose our top rivals, I'd choose ISU. That said, PSU, tOSU, Okie State and Minnesota aren't going anywhere. Well, Minnesota does seem to have left the picture for now, but they haven't fallen nearly as far as ISU has and will be tough again soon, I'm sure -- especially with Early in the lineup. . . . plug for Papa Bear. . . .

The point is that a stronger ISU just makes in-state recruiting that much tougher for Iowa, and we need every top Iowa stud we can get to compliment national recruiting to keep pace with the likes of PSU, tOSU, Okie State, and eventually, MN. Yes, a strong ISU makes for a more entertaining dual meet, and yes, a strong ISU is probably good for the sport in general, but a strong ISU also just makes it that much tougher for the Hawks to get back on top of the heap.

Kind of disagree WDM, Iowa has owned this state in recruiting for a long time, and I don't recall a lot of head to head battles that we lost with ISU. They may get some guys that don't want to leave the state and have more money to offer from time to time, but overall that hasn't been an issue. There is a reason Cael bailed on his school...............................................

The better ISU is, the better the national perspective for the state of Iowa in terms of College Wrestling, IMO (and UNI as well). And we know we have annual meetings with them, which used to be a big deal, even though we won most of the time, they were hotly contested and well attended. Some great battles at NCAA's as well. Something to really look forward to. I'd prefer to get back to those times and let the chips fall where they may with the rest of the country.

Iowa has to do better in recruiting period, and the State of Iowa has to produce more Brands, Juergens, Ironside's, Alger's, etc. That would go a long way to scoring more points at the NCAA's.

Totally see your point, sloe, but I still think a strong ISU would detract some from Iowa's recruiting success. I do agree that the quality of Iowa high school wrestling needs a resurgence, as it's the lifeblood of the Iowa program.

Huh?
Flo high school rankings prevent a blind draw at the world championships? Reaching just a bit there.
One of these days I'll take the time out to teach you the differences between seeding and ranking as well as high school wrestling and the world championships. Not today though.

ed - i was just joking. but the rankings cited (Storr, Parker etc) were HS rankings. so i thought you were taking issue with the hs ones. sure, hs rankings don't much matter when the kid is a soph or jr etc in college, but as they stand now based on performance, i think they're pretty much in the right ballpark.

as far as Gulibon - i don't think any ranker - CP or Hipps or anyone else - felt very strongly about anyone they put preseason #1.

as far as streaming all the Hawk matches on FLO - show me where to sign!
