ISU Press Conference: Opening Statements from DSJ, Zadick, and Metcalf

We need to get used to it, not that it will be easy, no doubt. And guess what, when Dresser and crew turn around ISU, and they will, some or all of these guys of these will be moving on to take top asst jobs or even head jobs elsewhere. It's going to happen, count on it

Edit: I should have said, "maybe they will be heading back to Iowa". That is a distinct possibility, without a doubt!!!
I heard from a guy on here our coaching positions are full until someone retires. Even if Gable himself wants on the staff because we don't know if he can recruit anymore.

Gable would not even be Gable in 2017. You can no longer out-train every other school in the country.

You certainly are short changing Coach Gable with the above comment. Gable was also the master of psychology and was incredibly innovative. If he was still coach I believe Hawks would either be competing for or winning the National Title each year. That's not a knock on coach Brands but rather a compliment on how Great a Coach that Gable was.

This may be a dumb question, but was there some kind of falling out between Metcalf and the Brands/Iowa? Just wondering...

He was in an interim position for a year and per U of I policy, the position was then posted. M* was hired instead of Zadick. Zadick did not choose to "leave" he just wasn't offered he position. Maybe just semantics for some but not for others.

Mike was already on staff for many years prior to that. He was S&C coach, then promoted to volunteer and then to full time paid assistant. He was officially interim which is a procedural holding status for someone who is going to get the job. Instead of the standard 1 year or less as interim he held that title for 2 years and was not retained afterwards. Maybe the hunting thing was an issue, maybe it wasn't, but he was on the staff for some 10 years then was not welcomed back. Spinning it as anything other than a firing is ignorant.

All that said, it was good to see him get another chance at VT and now ISU. My point isn't that he's a bad guy or a bad coach but he wasn't "lost" by Iowa to VT or ISU.

I really like Metcalf now. Great wrestler. ISU is going to get some great recruits because of him.

You really are a needy, attention seeking soul............

Watching that was a tad awkward. Dont get me wrong, I totally understand why these guys would accept this opportunity. That being said, they all seemed just a little embarrassed to be wearing those hideous colors.....and with good reason.

Sorry ISU fans, this forum is for fans of teams that score more than 1 team point, doesn't finish dead last, and certainly not for fans of teams who can't score more team points than utah valley state.

Sure are a lot of threads pertaining to that 1 point team.

I agree with your assessment of Coach Gable. But I don't think he could dominate today as he did.

I lived in Hillcrest in the early '80s back when every wrestler had to live in the dorm their first two years. Some stayed all four. Those guys told me many times they felt like they trained day and night and over and above what any other school even dreamed of doing. They knew they had that on their side every time they went on the mat. And most said they did it because they did not want to let Gable and their fellow teammates down.

No disrespect. It was just a different time.

My only point is that it wasn't Zadick's choice to leave. Maybe I should have just said. My bad

More Clone fans on here than on their site all season. Looks like they are back on the bandwagon. Must have been tough kissing old man Downey's ass the whole year thinking the son might have been your only AA. The Hawkeye West Wrestling club will be pretty good here in a few years...a lot better than the softies they have been.

Will let you keep your colors and perhaps even the robes but just remember that Hawks have been sent into to clean up the turdburger that program has become.

My take on this thread is ugly ass shirts, Nearing the time for widespread to disappear from the site. I touched on this before and Goblin said as well. Of all the wrestlers that VT had under dresser, ISU has had and in general around this country it absolutely is a huge feather in the cap of the Brands staff that they hire 3 of his guys.

Seems like a lot of people are nervous about St. John, Zaddick, and Metcalf being at ISU for recruiting reasons..... Let's not forget that we have a couple NCAA Champions, and an Olympic Gold Medalist and a Bronze Olympic Medalist on our staff.

ISU may get better but trust me when I say that the Iowa Hawkeyes are going to be just fine.

The only other "Gable" out there is Sanderson IMO. The two are gifted coaches that others can't match. If Gable were still coaching he would still be winning. I think we all would enjoy an NCAA team race between a Gable coached team and a Sanderson coached team. That would be fun to watch.

As I was watching this press conference, I tried to think of it from an ISU fan point of view. I think there is no doubt that the staff is a huge upgrade, but at the same time, you have to proceed with a bit of caution on whether it is just a stepping stone opportunity for the assistants from a long-term perspective ...

... BUT, the neutralizing factor is that they are making top dollar, so that always bodes well for retention.

That was a good press conference and I wish Zadick, Metcalf and DSJ the best of luck in their new roles. But Dresser seems like a used car salesman. He almost seems creepy to me for some reason.

Call him whatever, but there's some really successful used car salesman out there that get their job done and make good money.

You forgot some World Titles too. ;)

Well Sioux Cy - u are not Kwood's Dad nor mine so knock it off you condescending (laughable as a Clone) prick. Second, if you dispute your lack of like numbers here cause they don't include the little brother website then get your ass back there and shut up until you have a program that gets better than 1 point, and doesn't lose in football by 39, and loses to both Hawk basketball teams. Would reference baseball but forgot you can't field a team. Good luck in cross country u dick.

"Winners focus on winning. Losers focus on winners!"

I'm sick and tired of this board worrying more about Iowa St, PSU, Okie St , OSU, etc...

We have something damn special happening in Iowa City with the recruits and the talent that's already in the room. Next year, I believe we'll have 5 AAs and the following year we'll be competing for a national title. This board is less Iowa Hawkeyes and more overall college wrestling. If I could have one wish for HAWKEYE wrestling is we open up the check book and make David Taylor an offer he can't refuse to be an assistant coach.
It seem funny that you say lets just get back to only Hawkeye wrestling not overall college wrestling, then you say let bring a PSU wrestler to right the ship. Just thought that was funny.

Psychological warfare with bucks behind it. Checks can be written but the performance is the issue at hand. Dressers second fiddle is entirely that.
Go Current Hawkeye bunch
