Quite interesting to see who ISU goes after and ends up hiring. On the one hand, top 5ish roster returning and rare chance to succeed short term in a power 5 conference (few if any coaching searches have offered such a talented roster) makes one think they have the pick of the litter. On the other hand, recruiting to Ames, living in Ames, playing Kansas/Texas/OSU et. al. night in night out, makes one think it is hard to see a top coach staying there long term and they get a runt.

Perfect fit for a young phenom climber to come in for a short successful stint and move on to greener long term pastures. Yet is that what is best for ISU? Would they be better off finding somebody with a reasonable prospect of long tenure? Fred have any well regarded assistants ala Morgan to give a shot? Also seems a situation that will be a hard trigger to pull for a coach with options. Might be a better idea to give an older coach another chance and a place to make a long ride into the sunset ala Orr.

Fascinating situation. Pollard has to be ready for this search, not like its a big surprise.

I just hope Pollard doesn't figure out Speraw would be awesome hire. Assume he won't, cause Pollard. but the guy has the experience to give next year a chance to soar, along with state ties and recruiting connections to stay awhile.

PS also hope Ben Jacobson recently told his secretary to take a message.

If Hoiberg leaves...and I'm still not convinced he will...that TJ guy will take his place.

I think TJ will step in. I have a hard time believing Hoiberg would have brought TJ all the way back out here if he thought TJ would be out of a job in a few months. I think Hoiberg and Pollard have had TJ in mind the whole time. It's almost too late in the offseason to get anyone else IMO.

Lots of Cyclones think it'll be another favorite ISU son, Jeff Hornacek. I don't really see that one.

Jacobson's style of play would drive ISU fans mad. That one ain't happening.

Four things.

  1. Who is this TJ?
  2. Words can barely express how happy I am to have needed to ask that question. It is a Hawkeye website after all, despite LC and his minions, and not knowing anything about TJ on the day Hoiberg quasi-officially leaves shows a complete lack of caring for or interest in ISU.
  3. Sounds like TJ is an assistant, will no doubt recognize him from Carver and tv. Players fairly certain to be on board with a move like that, sigh, Clones look to be awesome next year.
  4. Homage. Rooted against Hoiberg for what seemed like 10 years when he was in high school and college, and now for what seems like 10 years as ISU coach. In all that time he's really never been anything but all stud in all ways. Rooting against him all that time and not seeing something to dislike is pretty remarkable Delighted he is going to the Bulls.

I really didn't need the rest of it, but the bolded part tells me you're a total idiot. Seriously, DO NOT start threads when you're this uninformed. And I'm a Hawkeye fan...

Don't know why still some don't believe he may bolt. 3 big indicators he will. Pollard hired a firm to help in hiring a new coach. Articles from Chicago papers and ESPN basically saying working out the details of contract. Finally he even interviewed for Orlando job according to their paper. He Is good as gone.

You're just happy Fred is leaving because he was kicking Iowa's @$$.

According to an article I read TJ is not qualified to be the head coach at ISU. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Hornacek, but he doesn't have the charisma of Fred.

I hear that DJ Ötzi is a done deal. No coaching experience but he's been highly successful in Germany....here he is singing "Sweet Caroline".....

It's cautious optimism.

In the short term it might make sense for ISU to hire this Dewey Ocksenberger fellow as he is already on the staff. In the long run though, I think they would be much better off going with someone with some experience. It worked out well for them with Hoyburger, to hire a guy with no coaching experience but I think that was a very unique situation which is unlikely to be repeated. Maybe they are trying to save some money by promoting an assistant, I don't know. Guess that is a definite possibility. can't believe the athletic dept is going to sell many football tickets this season except for the Iowa game.

ISU will sell more tickets for the UNI game than the Iowa game. Always does, and this year should be even more so.

In terms of hiring the coach, the cynics would say that Jamie is trying to save money because he's going to have to buy out Rhoads' contract.

Whoever gets the job at State is going to be really pleased with the water.

LC, you don't think the Iowa game will be a sellout?

I think it will be a sellout, sure. But the biggest crowds in ISU history are for UNI, not Iowa. Plus, this year the Panther fans will be especially fired up because they'll be sure they're going to win, and Hawkeye fans, meanwhile, aren't exactly foaming at the mouth with enthusiasm for football, as you may have noticed from the posts on the board.

I don't know what season ticket sales at ISU are doing. I assume they aren't going particularly well, because the AD hasn't sent out press releases about sales. They have been at record highs the past two years, so even if the team hadn't sucked so badly last year, there probably would have been some dropoff. The south endzone project will offset some of that, as people are curious to experience the new configuration, but the last two seasons were 3-9 and 2-10, which isn't the way to pack the stadium.

LC - Are you sure about that??? UNI always bigger than Iowa???

Are the biggest crowds for UNI? Yes, as your post shows.
Does UNI always outdraw Iowa? No.
I would suggest a small wager on which game has the bigger attendance this year, but if both are listed as sellouts, as was the case in '13, that would be difficult to resolve.

Sept. 10, 2011 "Don't let anymore people in or we have no chance!"

I think they had to have made some assurances to TJ to get him back. So if I had to bet, I would say him. But with the roster they have coming back you would have to think some pretty talented coaches would listen to ISU. Especially since they can also pay 2.5 million plus

So, who is TJ? I still haven't figured it out.

TJ Otzelberger[1] was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Thomas L. and Jackie A. Otzelberger. He attended Thomas More High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was a three-year starter on the varsity basketball team.[2] He played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and was team captain for two years.[2] On June 1, 2013, he married Alison Lacey,[1][3] former ISU Women's Basketball standout, former WNBA player,[4] and former coach[5] of the Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball Team.

He was an assistant at Chipola College, then came to Ames to be an assistant and head recruiter for Greg McDermott at Iowa State, and remained in the same position when Fred Hoiberg replaced McDermott, and later was elevated to associate head coach. Otzelberger left in 2013 to join the staff at Washington, worked there for two seasons, and returned to ISU a month or two ago.

Wow, did anyone else catch this today?!?!?

"Otzelberger could well be Pollard's top choice to be the Cyclones' head coach and that would make sense. They have a high level of familiarity with one another from Otzelberger's previous stint at Iowa State and he, of course, just returned to the program just a few weeks ago. They are both native Wisconsinites as well and a successful run as ISU's head coach could position Otzelberger well to be a candidate for the Wisconsin coaching job when it opens up - especially if Pollard fills the Wisconsin AD job when it opens up. Both Ryan and Barry Alvarez are pushing retirement so it's a master plan that would make sense for both Otzelberger and Pollard." Paul Clark, Cyclone Report. Here's the whole article:

https://iowastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1771122

The MASTER PLAN!!!!! Cyclones! You are being had! Stone stepping Badgers are marching through you to Madison!

I would think Pollard would more likely be on the list of ADs on the hot seat than on ADs due to be promoted. His football team is abysmal and he just lost his stud wrestling coach and basketball coach.

I guess that depends on your definition of always. the IA & UNI games are tied for # 1. You conviently cut your response off before the next largest crowd with Iowa.. I don;t care who has the largest crowd this year, just questioning your previous statement.

The sports talk guys in Arizona brought the rumor up about Jeff Horn leaving the Suns for ISU and basically started laughing. I don't think he is going anywhere.

I would doubt Jamie Pollard was feeling much like negotiations in getting TJ back to Iowa State. Pollard had just suffered a heart attack and was still in the hospital. I heard TJ say in an interview that his wife was wanting to come back to Iowa and he figured he should come, too. His wife is also the one who wanted to move to Washington. She was a former ISU point guard who played for a Washington WNBA team and liked it there.

Since moving to Washington, they are also the proud parents of twins.

I said in a subsequent post that I was wrong to say "always."

So why would TJ have come back when everyone in the basketball community knew Fred was gone?

Because there was an opening when the coach who took over TJ's recruiting position when to coach at his alma mater mid season. From what I read it sounded like his wife was wanting to come back even before the opening became available, but I guess it really doesn't matter.

Yes I know. But why would you take a position when you know the head coach is leaving . If isu hired a new coach there is no guarantees the new coach would retainTJ . So why would he move to Ames knowing in two months he might have to move again
