It isn't a quarterback "controversy"

z
That's the hard part. I thought he managed well in the 1st half. The wheels just came off in the 2nd half. The most infuriating throw all day was on the opening drive. He had #21 running wide open and under threw him for a for sure TD. Then they missed a FG. 10-7 at half is what it should have been. Maybe 17-7 or 13-7 if we stay with the fake punt? The complexion of the game may change in the 2nd half if so
I just have no confidence that Cade will ever make a sick ass TD pass. His WRs have to have a 5 yard cushion for him to have any confidence.

I think I liked last year better so far. Offense was funnier, defense seemingly better, and we had Tory Taylor. I appreciate Kaleb and running the ball effectively, so that's nice and all. However with the fight against apathy for Iowa FB and CFB in general, the memes and oddities of 2023, plus Tory, was more satisfying.
The way we were trolling the college football universe was hilarious and very much satisfying. People were just losing their minds over how we were playing.

It was fun.

The throw he made last year on the first play of the first game, was the last one I remember.

I agree it's frustrating, but it can't be the case that Lester is jumping up and down saying "WE MUST SWITCH to Sullivan" can it?

I think its conceivable Cade may still be unanimously seen internally as our best chance to win.
Doesn't make any difference what Lester wants, Kirk makes all the calls on offense. The OC is merely a token position because everybody else has one. A 3 year old kid could be OC at Iowa.

it could be that Sullivan is just as bad. It's not like he was a hot free agent. Lester is cooking with the groceries that KF and his staff bought.

Sadly, that would track.

We all said there’s no way Padilla could be worse than Petras. He was.

We all said there’s no way Lainez could be worse than Hill. He was.

Our QB recruiting/evaluations have been just god awful lately.

I have heard Lainez isn't a P5 QB from people who would know. the only reason he is on the roster is inabilty to replace him this year and they needed bodies. He will not be here next year if possible.

I've also read the freshman they brought in this year, Resar, is not a D1 QB. Good athlete but he has to change positions if he wants to stay at Iowa.

I like pissed off Torbs. If he really is the best QB they have it is malpractice on a whole new malpractices level.
But..it's only been 4 years to figure it out. Be patient. He is "improving". He is only a 6th year P5 QB
it's possible that any qb with intel from stallions was going to do pretty well at mich. entirely possible this is as good as he ever was.

I’m NOT an expert by any stretch…but I do have an idea of how it should look when someone throws a football.

Resar needs a complete overhaul of his throwing motion.

It's borderline malpractice.

My TwT column this week:

A QB controversy? We haven't seen that since CJB. I think that was the straw that broke the camels back for KF and he said "never again". We can see the incompetence in the QB position, but apparently KZF can't. It's really a shame.

Kirk Ferentz is predictable and like clockwork when it comes to his "golden goose" at the QB position, in the now & recently past (at least) half a decade or so ....

"He looks really good in practice"
"He gives us the best chance to win"
"He's improving"

.... then along comes game day, and said chosen QB looks like a five-alarm dumpster fire with rotten shitty smelling garbage doused in flames. Week after week, after week, after week, etc.

To be fair, Cade and Kirk had help.
Below average WR group.
O Line just can't compete against top quality athletes.
Kaleb is mostly a big-play back, and that just wasn't there against OSU.

Iowa needs to be a run first option team with Sullivan. They won’t be until next year, but they should be starting with Washington. Ferentz is out of his mind here, but we all expected this from him. This is the man who thought Brian Ferentz was a good OC, and he would still have him in that saddle if not for a new, young AD with the balls to tell him no.
BF would have been 100x better in a different program. He knows football. Iowa’s offensive issues have always stemmed from the top and our unwillingness to consistently tweak our culture or philosophy in order to adapt to changing trends. We’re never proactive, always reacting and thus behind the curve.

My TwT column this week:

My opinion is that Cade might be the better quarterback if only a facilitator of great talent around him (like Brock purdy) but given the ball catchers on the roster, Sullivan gives the team a better chance to win. Against good teams, we need the qb mobility to get WRs/TEs open or punish them with scrambles.

Yep. His name is Brian Ferentz.

And if not for the intervention of a first-year AD, he would still be here.

Two things:

1. Kirk cannot evaluate quarterback talent.
2. No quarterback worth a shit is going to sign up to play in this shit offense in which his main responsibilities are handing off and throwing 3-yard outs.

My TwT column this week:

Agree with the theme of the article with the exception of stating McNamara having a bad first half. Other than the horrible miss on a wide open Wetjen I thought he was pretty good considering the duress he was under because the o-line sucked.

Third qtr he sucked and once we were down 21-0 Sullivan should have been brought in.

Brian Ferentz was possibly the worst major program OC in modern history. His predecessor and successor have illustrated his extreme futility, even when accounting for old man Kirk’s philosophical deficiencies. I like Brian, and I wish he were still in the program, but he should not have been the OC and would never have been given such an opportunity if not by his father. Maybe down the line, but not with his resume. He was comically unqualified and it showed.

No one is going to win games with Deacon Hill and Spencer Petras at QB along with FCS caliber WRs. We have walk on WRs that belong in D2 or D3 football. That’s a KF problem. I disagree and don’t think you know what you’re talking about, like most fans. Simple as that.

Anyone with a clue knew he wasn’t a serious QB prospect. Nobody is picking Iowa, especially from that part of the country, to play QB at Iowa if he has any other suitable offers

Well, you clearly demonstrate that you don’t have a god damn clue what you’re talking about if you think Brian Ferentz showed that he could be an OC, and that Iowas problems are all on old Kirk.

Brian was in the role for a long time, he and his staff are the ones that architected this roster. And with virtually the same guys, an OC who isn’t in over his head has the run game doing things and has one of the nations leading rushers.

People forget that Iowas offense was horrible before McNamara went down and just got a bit worse with Hill. McNamara put up less than 500 yards in his first four games. Iowa averaged 21ppg in the opening 4 games with a humiliating shutout at Penn State and racking up points against western Michigan and Utah State.

Let us also remember that he ran off Tyrone Tracy and Charlie Jones, after getting virtually nothing out of them. Both in the NFL right now.

I tend to agree he is best-suited for another position, but he had scholarship offers from North Carolina, Indiana, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Tulane.

based on those offers he's got have solid qb potential. just have to be willing to use him as a dual threat instead

I’m sure he did, but I’m assuming zero of those offers were at QB
