Observers note that during his first term, Trump said he wanted “the kind of generals that Hitler had,” apparently unaware that Hitler’s generals tried to kill him and instead imagining they were all fiercely loyal. They also note that authoritarian leader Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union purged his officer corps to make sure it was commanded by those loyal to him.

Good read. Some people will get caught up trying to make 1:1 comparisons even though parallels are all over the place. The closest comparison in my opinion is Putin. A democratically elected autocrat surrounded by corruption, oligarchs, and blind loyalty lest ye be ejected. However, calling Trump a Putin doesn't really deliver well.

There are enough similarities between Trump and Stalin or Hitler to use them as comparisons. They both had internal and external enemies that they used to fear monger and control people. I feel like the Nazis draw closer comparison in the fear propaganda from internal forces, while the fear driven from Stalin was probably fear of Stalin foremost and needing to catch up to the west secondarily. The Nazis mostly had loyalty minus some people that ended up scheming on the backend, and I believe we saw a little of that in Trump one as leaks started happening and a few turned on him.

The Hitler and Nazi comparison maybe fits as well because of the mysticism around the power structure which in the Trump machine it consist of unfounded conspiracies and oddly religious people. Stalin put heavy restrictions on that sort of behavior.

One thing they all have in common is paranoia.

How is what Trump is doing any different than what Biden was doing when he went full woke in the military. The majority of the country didn't support promoting people just because they were black or LGBTQ.
