Ivory Kelly-Martin

Great to have you on board Ivory! You made a very wise choice to come to Iowa as we are bringing in some top notch OLs who open big holes for you to run through. This program is going places and you will be a big part of that. Thank you for picking the Hawkeyes!

The first ex Hawk player that came to my mind when watching his highlights was Fred Russell only better. Like Russell he has a burst of quickness, can squeeze through a small hole and has eyes in the back of his head with great awareness of his surroundings. But unlike Russell he also appears to be able to take it the distance and doesn't go down easily. I don't see him as an everydown back but more a change of pace or 3rd down back if he can catch the ball which we didn't see on his highlights.

How does a top RB in all of Illinois only rate a 3 star??
Also, one place says he is 5'11 and 195 and another says he is 5'10 and 175. I am skeptical about him, as in the video he is even or slightly slower than some of the defensive backs. But he does seem to be able to change directions pretty well.
Watched the highlights a second time just to see if I could see what you were seeing. He did get caught a couple times from players having angles on him but he out ran many of those and I didn't see any player catch him from behind.

Agreed. I thought his speed looked like a plus on tape. He outran people with angles many times. I think he has enough speed that he won't get caught from behind regularly in college, although he probably won't out run people angles with as much frequency.

I wonder if Ivory Kelly-Martin will turn out to be an athlete that Iowa will convert to WR to utilize his natural speed in space. Also, since Ivory is in the Chicago Burbs near Naperville, he is probably friends with 2016 Iowa commit Emmanuel Rugamba and Iowa 2017 WR prospect Isiah Robertson. Iowa's Wr corps needs some playmakers to improve the QB efficiency. Iowa can always find LBs and OLs/DLs and RBs but skill positions have been underwhelming at Iowa.

I know, I know. "Iowa is not sexy."and " That's football".

His stats last year didn't show any receiving TD's (maybe that's one of the reasons he changed high schools) but I hope he can catch a ball other than kickoff returns because I agree if he can get into space he could be a difference maker. I don't know if converting him into a WR that catches a couple passes a game is the best way to utilize him though. I'd like to see him touching the ball more frequently with sweeps and screen passes because I think he's elusive enough to get into the secondary often.

Like the way he picks the hole. Big doubt about some RB highlights has been the way they jumped to the outside right away. Garmon and Higdon come to mind. Neither would have been effective in the Iowa system; Ivory-Martin will be a blast!

I thought exact same thing. I was always skeptical of Garmon for this very reason

I have been a season ticket holder for many years as well as attended Nazareth (many years ago) but went to a few games over their last 2 year Championship run. My impressions are he is quick but pretty small - will have to bulk up and mature a bit but could be productive. His line was outstanding, but he made nice moves around them. Rather have than not have. Hope he doesn't get crushed switching to his hometown school.

wou not say a kid that is 5'11 195 is pretty small, especially since the coaches want 5'11 Wadley to play at 190, just my 2 cents on a kids size and his ability to play FB, sorry as a father who was constantlt his son was to small at a small 1A school that a 5'9 Fr in HS was to small it get me worked up,

he ended up quitting and turned his full attention to bowling, to date he has 7 300's, 1 800 and carries a 229 avg, his teammates keep teasing him about turning pro, and he is now 6'0 and he was a RB in HS school and a PG in BB.

size has nothing to do with their ability to play the game, just ask Dwight, Russell even Canzeri were all under 5'10.
