Class of 2017 power forward Jack Nunge committed to Iowa today.

Coach Fran McCaffery and staff have landed their second commitment of the weekend. Yesterday, it was Washington D.C. center Luka Garza deciding and today Indiana power forward Jack Nunge joined him, announcing his verbal pledge to the Hawkeyes following his official visit to Iowa City over the weekend.

The 6-foot-9, 185-pound Nunge chose Iowa over scholarship offers from Clemson, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Creighton, Vanderbilt, Toledo, Evansville, and Ball State.

Overall, he is the third commitment for the Hawkeyes in the Class of 2017, joining Garza and Connor McCaffery.

I'm glad Fran doesn't think like some of the idiots on this board that Conner "deserves" a scholarship. Whatever that means.
Conner does deserve a scholarship but Fran is willing to possibly foot the bill himself so that Iowa has another scholarship to give out.

I'm sure that Alford never considered doing that with his own son at UCLA (who also deserved a scholarship). If you can play at the Division I level and other schools are recruiting you then you deserve a scholarship regardless of who your father is.

While I agree that Connor deserves a scholarship when your dad is the coach AND he's a millionaire that makes becoming a walk on, despite being a scholarship level player, a really easy and sensible option especially when it means you get to add 2 skilled big men.

If this works out, Fran will make enough bonus cash to cover his sons tuition and expenses. He will do what is best for his team, his son and himself.

And Nebraska, and Ga Tech, and Clemson...at least according to Rivals.
Those teams have one combined NCAA tournament since 2011 and several losing seasons. If you want to call them comparable to Iowa, be my guest. I sure as hell don't see it though.

Maybe not as good very recently, but if you'd have looked at them 3-4 years ago in comparison to Iowa, they'd be really, really close. Besides, they are all P5 teams. Throw in Creighton, too.

A lot can change and has changed in 4 years of college basketball. Being a P5 team means next to nothing in basketball. You're either a good program or not. Right now, only Vandy (and maybe Creighton) should be in discussion as the same level of program as Iowa.

A guuess. In 2 years

Conner, J.Bo, and Williams points
Weiskamp, Dailey,and Moss, 2 guards
Baer, Pemsl small fowards
Wagner, Cook, Nunge. power forwards
Garza, Kriener posts

Jok, Uhl, and Ellingson graduated/gone

We won't have had a team with this kind of athletic depth in forever. One senior Baer.

All of these guys can play more than 1 position. It should create a ton of competion for minutes and give us a bunch of match up options. If these kids learn how to defend it could be a special ride. The outlook is brilliant for the Hawks if we can peak thru a couple of seasons of clouds and sunshine mix.

No spelling policing please.

So this puts us two over for schollies right? Is some Creaning about to happen? Everyone was in the recent team photo so it doesn't appear someone has left or has told Fran they're leaving. I guess Connor could give back his full ride but still.

Did all of Ferentz's sons walk on to the Iowa Football program? I would not call people idiots for suggesting that a player should receive a scholarship who is deserving of an athletic scholarship. If Fran decides to make another scholarship available by having his son walk on to the Iowa Basketball program, then that is a magnanimous gesture on his part.

To expect him to do this however, takes away from his choice to do so.

I think most folks forget that this isn't Frans decision alone...Connor has a say in it as well. There is something to be said for paying your own way through school and not having to rely on Mommy and Daddy.

Connor has already indicated that he was open to the idea of walking on if the right recruiting opportunity arose,...
And as far as this becoming a Mommy & Daddy paying for college situation, that just wouldn't be the case. If they do this, Connor is simply loaning his scholarship back to his father to be used as a recruiting tool. If Dad then picks up the tuition he is just paying Connor back. Connor has already earned the scholarship, that can't be taken away.....

I agree with you....just putting out there that Connor might have another perspective.

Isn't he being recruit for baseball? Couldn't he get a scholly to play baseball and then walk on the basketball roster? is that allowed in NCAA? Ive heard some people say that baseball is his best sport and he has the possibility to go pro in?

Another option is an Iowa player might be ahead in their school work and might try to graduate transfer out?? Could that be a possibility? Who out of the junior class could do that?

What a fantastic weekend for Hawkeye basketball. Jack and Luka will team up to form the new "twin towers" for the Iowa program. Thank you Jack for staying home to play for the Hawks when so many around the country were trying to secure your talents This is special!.

I found this in the following article. "There isn't an NCAA rule against coaches paying for their child-athlete's education. The McDermotts are doing it. Nebraska associate athletic director Jamie Williams' son Evan is a freshman walk-on quarterback for the Huskers." http://www.cornnation.com/2013/7/3/4490836/should-coaches-children-take-athletic-scholarships

Is it my imagination or did 247sports downgrade the ratings on both Nunge and Garza after they committed to Iowa?

That's true. Evan however would not have been offered a scholarship to Nebraska and I believe he is no longer at NU but is playing now at Wagner. Doug McDermott played his SR year as a walk on so that PG Grant Gibbs could stay on scholarship after being granted a 6th year by the NCAA.

So Iowa is 2 scholarships over for the class of 2017, correct? And, Iowa fans believe that's morally, ethically ok and a good way to run a program?

I am sure that Fran knows something that we don't know. We are 1 over if Connor does not take a scholarship which he indicated that he would do. The other scholarship will come from somewhere which Fran probably already knows about.

Getting both Nunge and Garza is great! Getting 2 out of the 3 big men that you were looking at says something about how far Iowa Basketball has come.
