Jack Nunge Suffers Torn ACL

If it had to happen better now than 2-3 months from now.

He should have sufficient time to be ready for the 2020 opener.

This is correct,.. I forgot his elective redshirt...
He can always petition for a hardship. The NCAA may not accept it though. He has a good case having only played in 4.5 games before the injury. But who knows with the NCAA. If he hires a lawyer they will probably cave like they do with petitions for immediate eligibility after transferring.

That’s terrible.

Bobby asked Fran in the post game about the injuries. Fran said something to the effect, “they’re fine, Nunge will have an MRI on Monday.” You could tell by Fran’s tone that it didn’t sound good.

Sucks for Nunge. I don't think it's a blow to this team. Fran will be forced to not have two centers on the floor for 40 minutes.

The combo Kriener + Garza looked better than Nunge + Garza. If Pemsl regains his Freshman form, then we are okay. Losing Nunge forces Fran to go smaller and play fewer guys, which means they play better defense, and are less stagnant on offense. This is bad break for Nunge in his basketball life--but he's really a very smart young man who is going to be very successful in life. I don't think it will hurt the team record this year. If Pmac is he player the board says he is, then he will make an impact.

Fran seems to be mum on a lot of things lol.

I liked the smaller rotation for sure. I did like Kriener being able to back up Garza as opprosed to playing along side Garza. Pemsl is going to have to step his game up, which he did Sunday in the second half. We’ll see how that goes against better competition.

I tore my ACL when I was 40 and asked the doctor 50 questions about the cause. He said nobody really knows. Kids can tear them when they are in high school with little wear and tear on their bodies. Specifically girls basketball and volleyball players have a very high rate of ACL tears.

I was jogging down the court after making a basket and looked like Nunge did last night. I thought someone tripped me because my knee just buckled under me. I am not a physical therapist or doctor, but do not think bulking up increases your odds. It's just a random wear-tear issue that affects people differently from what I was told. 5 years later tore my rotator cuff--same explanation from the doctor.
It is not PC I guess, but women have a higher rate of torn ACL's and MCL's because they tend to have wider hips which puts a higher stress angle on their knees.

I've been through three ACL tears, all in the span of about 4 and a half years.

For most people, it takes 6-9 months to where you can start to think about getting ready to play, 9-12 months before you can play, and a year or two before you feel normal again (if at all).

Stinks for Nunge and everyone feels bad for his situation. Wonder if the added weight contributed to this?
There is no strong scientific evidence that weight is linked to ACL tears, and it is especially unlikely to be a factor for elite athletes in their early 20s.

That is very sad. I hope he heals up and gets a couple of good seasons playing at Iowa.
That is along with wanting him to be able to resume normal activities.
Good luck to him!

This is a bitter blow to the already depleted roster. Nothing about PMac's situation sounds like he'll return. Nunge gone eliminates two potential player's who at least have height going for them. Obviously PMac's future is not at 4, cuz he's never going to be big enough for inside defending.

I thought Cordell would win the job if his athleticism hasn't been too injury impaired but man do we need him now. Cordell had the skill to be a quality inside forward and it remains to be seen if still has it. Once we get out of the Luka/Ryan/Cordell trio there is no size left on the bench.

Likely right but are there really tons of ‘scientific studies’ on skinny, nearly 7 foot young men adding a lot of weight in one year then playing major college basketball and exerting/torquing the knee the next season? Maybe there is.

As the year goes on and the fire Fran chants grow louder let’s remember Jack, J Bo, and Patrick aren’t around.

I’m projecting the worst for Patrick as it sounds like there are complications that will at best limit his effectiveness this season.

Next year with Garza and J Bo as seniors, CJ and Joe W, Joe T with a year under his belt and an experienced Conner we’ll have enough depth to let the freshman develop before they have to play clutch minutes. With the outside firepower in that group it will be fun to watch them.

Really awful news. Have a successful surgery and complete recover, Jack.

Hawks can't afford anything more. Pemsl needs to be able to give at least 20 min. The smaller lineup is sounding better all the time, but it would sure help if PMac were back. What is the latest on Patrick's health?

Liked Nunge a lot, and he was starting to come along. Odd how the injury happened; just came down awkwardly on his leg. My heart goes out to Jack. Imagine Kriener starts, with Cordell playing a lot more. If PMac doesn't play, we are really weak in bigs all of a sudden. Maybe move Wieskamp over a bit. I've been waiting for Riley Till to be an offensive player since his soph year in high school; he plays good defense, but he is just not a scorer, and never was much of a scorer, even on the Iowa championship teams with Pemsl..

What do you think of Cordell starting and Ryan off the pine? Seems to make more sense because Ryan can play two positions while Cordell is strictly a 4 and will never be a 5. Just food for thought. Interesting to see which way it goes.

I'm not sure I agree about Cordell being strictly a 4.

He's a wide body. That said, I agree with Kriener off the bench.

I think once Patrick is healthy, you move to an 8 man rotation. This year will be a year to get new comers acclimated with the big ten and players find there roles. I do not see Bohannon playing very much the rest of the year. It will be a rebuilding year and we will be setting ourselves up for next year.

You mean a 9 man rotation? We are at 8 now. One could say 9 with Till. But Riley is spot minutes at best. Saved for breathers and foul trouble.

PMac should take the medical redshirt and adjust to the college level. That is if he can play with his condition at all. We'll see how the change in meds goes.

Fingers crossed for all our young men! May they be as healthy as they can be. Soon

This stinks for Jack. From a team perspective, if this means Jacks 18 MPG get split up to give both Garza and Weiskamp 5 more minutes a game, somehow, and put them at 32 MPG both, I feel like that's better for Iowa as a whole. Five more for Kreiner and Pemsl should allow them to get more into the flow as well.

Pretty tough to get a sixth year... but I will keep my fingers crossed for him...

Till is an energy guy to fill in 5 minutes a game at most and give guys a break. That is perfectly fine for a tenth man. He helped in a few big games last year providing guys a few minutes of rest.

Actually that is a good point, I had forgotten that Jack got hurt prior to deciding to redshirt last season. There may very well be a case there.

I think he wants to be a physician so he may not want to stay in school that long.

Especially since Cordell spend a good part of the 2nd half playing the 5. Pemsl is now 6'9" and nearly back to 250lbs. He's good at getting position down low. Struggles a bit shooting over longer guys, but can be crafty and being left handed often helps against teams early in the year but come BigTen he's got to develop a counter move an be able to finish over his left shoulder too.

If he's planning on becoming a physician he'd best drop any thoughts about minimizing his time in school...

I think he's referring to undergrad. It's unlikely he would play basketball and attend medical school concurrently even if he went to Iowa for medical school.

If Cordell is 6'9" Luka and Jack are 7'1" and RK is 7'.

You don't count the 3 inches of hair. More like 6'7" but wide and strong. Crafty moves inside. Was a quality rebounder before the injury. Noticed he's passing a little better this season. I am looking for big things from Cordell.

I like Kreiner at the 4 he can also step out and shoot the 3 plus he is a senior and will bring it every game

I don't know how i missed this. I feel really bad for this kid. Good luck in his rehab, I hope he comes back strong.

At least Iowa has a senior that has played a lot that can take his place. Add that to Pemsl returning, I don't see much effect at all it would have in Iowa's success this year. Not trying to diminish Jack, but I don't think the season rested in him.

Biggest problem is depth. We have one starting C, a returning from injury PF, and a backup PF/C moving forward for bodies that should be getting playing time. One more injury to a big and we have to completely change our playing style.
