Nunge can't take a medical redshirt since he redshirted last year.
He can always petition for a hardship. The NCAA may not accept it though. He has a good case having only played in 4.5 games before the injury. But who knows with the NCAA. If he hires a lawyer they will probably cave like they do with petitions for immediate eligibility after transferring. This is correct,.. I forgot his elective redshirt...
Sucks for Nunge. I don't think it's a blow to this team. Fran will be forced to not have two centers on the floor for 40 minutes.
Fran seems to be mum on a lot of things lol. That’s terrible.
Bobby asked Fran in the post game about the injuries. Fran said something to the effect, “they’re fine, Nunge will have an MRI on Monday.” You could tell by Fran’s tone that it didn’t sound good.
The combo Kriener + Garza looked better than Nunge + Garza. If Pemsl regains his Freshman form, then we are okay. Losing Nunge forces Fran to go smaller and play fewer guys, which means they play better defense, and are less stagnant on offense. This is bad break for Nunge in his basketball life--but he's really a very smart young man who is going to be very successful in life. I don't think it will hurt the team record this year. If Pmac is he player the board says he is, then he will make an impact.
It is not PC I guess, but women have a higher rate of torn ACL's and MCL's because they tend to have wider hips which puts a higher stress angle on their knees.I tore my ACL when I was 40 and asked the doctor 50 questions about the cause. He said nobody really knows. Kids can tear them when they are in high school with little wear and tear on their bodies. Specifically girls basketball and volleyball players have a very high rate of ACL tears.
I was jogging down the court after making a basket and looked like Nunge did last night. I thought someone tripped me because my knee just buckled under me. I am not a physical therapist or doctor, but do not think bulking up increases your odds. It's just a random wear-tear issue that affects people differently from what I was told. 5 years later tore my rotator cuff--same explanation from the doctor.
There is no strong scientific evidence that weight is linked to ACL tears, and it is especially unlikely to be a factor for elite athletes in their early 20s.Stinks for Nunge and everyone feels bad for his situation. Wonder if the added weight contributed to this?

Liked Nunge a lot, and he was starting to come along. Odd how the injury happened; just came down awkwardly on his leg. My heart goes out to Jack. Imagine Kriener starts, with Cordell playing a lot more. If PMac doesn't play, we are really weak in bigs all of a sudden. Maybe move Wieskamp over a bit. I've been waiting for Riley Till to be an offensive player since his soph year in high school; he plays good defense, but he is just not a scorer, and never was much of a scorer, even on the Iowa championship teams with Pemsl..
What do you think of Cordell starting and Ryan off the pine? Seems to make more sense because Ryan can play two positions while Cordell is strictly a 4 and will never be a 5. Just food for thought. Interesting to see which way it goes.
I think once Patrick is healthy, you move to an 8 man rotation. This year will be a year to get new comers acclimated with the big ten and players find there roles. I do not see Bohannon playing very much the rest of the year. It will be a rebuilding year and we will be setting ourselves up for next year.

Pretty tough to get a sixth year... but I will keep my fingers crossed for him...

I'm not sure I agree about Cordell being strictly a 4.
He's a wide body. That said, I agree with Kriener off the bench.
I think he wants to be a physician so he may not want to stay in school that long.
If he's planning on becoming a physician he'd best drop any thoughts about minimizing his time in school...
I think he's referring to undergrad. It's unlikely he would play basketball and attend medical school concurrently even if he went to Iowa for medical school.
Especially since Cordell spend a good part of the 2nd half playing the 5. Pemsl is now 6'9" and nearly back to 250lbs. He's good at getting position down low. Struggles a bit shooting over longer guys, but can be crafty and being left handed often helps against teams early in the year but come BigTen he's got to develop a counter move an be able to finish over his left shoulder too.
Biggest problem is depth. We have one starting C, a returning from injury PF, and a backup PF/C moving forward for bodies that should be getting playing time. One more injury to a big and we have to completely change our playing style. At least Iowa has a senior that has played a lot that can take his place. Add that to Pemsl returning, I don't see much effect at all it would have in Iowa's success this year. Not trying to diminish Jack, but I don't think the season rested in him.
