Switched from LB per KF today. Considered DE possibly DL also. I thought he looked like one of the most promising 2014 recruits; he chose Iowa over Michigan State and Pittsburgh. Opportunity is there going forward with 2 senior TEs on the roster.

Im guessing they want more athleticism at TE. Not really sure but I doubt he plays this year.

Would be a shame if a Power 5 recruit actually panned out. Apparently he doesn't have the small town Iowa intangibles.

Count me surprised bigtime. JO was a prized lb recruit. If it means that our lbs are coming along well and the coaches want to get the best athletes on the field, it portends well.

Fwiw, MSU offered him as a TE. They had zero interest in him as a LB. Outsey was given the choice by the Iowa staff to move to DE or TE, and chose TE. I'm guessing his 4.8 time in the 40 had something to do with the move to another position.... He was a player that moved around alot in high school. He actually lined up as a OT at times. His weight flucuated up and down as well. Kid has potential, it just looks like he wants to be an offensive player. The staff agrees that he would be better off over there.

I was unaware that he was recruited by MSU as a TE. My recollection though is that he was considered quick/fast for his position and that he timed quite well, certainly not 4.8.

He would have to be a 6'7" CFed body type to be effective at TE if he only runs a 4.8. Suspect he is much faster than that.

Don't put so much stock into 40-times. There are other metrics as well ... agility, quickness, explosiveness, etc. A 40-time only tells you straight line speed ... and, even then, we simply don't know how much of the time was due to technique and/or wasted motion. Amari Spievey was timed out of high school with something like a 4.6 40 ... and yet in his last year (and a half) in an Iowa uniform, it really didn't matter how fast the WR was who lined up against him. He locked them down! But, by his 40-time, I guess he may not have been fast enough to play a "speed position" for a Power 5 team?

Anyhow, as for Outsey to TE ... it seems like it could be a good fit. He played some TE in high school ... and, by working at OLB ... he already knows how TEs like to do things (and how they'd approach an OLB). There's also A LOT of opportunity at the position ... and even more so given that Wisnieski is likely not yet 100% after coming off the ACL injury.

Prolly helps that he is familiar with Coach L Woods as well. Woods helped coach him last year and is the new TE coach...

The reason given for the move was how he is growing and the growth potential. Sounds like his body can be transformed easily.

Cant get too big at LB today or you can't get on field.

Yes - the decision to move to TE was Outsey's

The decision to move because he was never going to be a B1G LB. Kirk said as much. But yeah, Outsey "chose" TE over DE. Outsey was on board, but typically the conductor of these trains are the coaches!

Well this sucks. We need more talented LB's.
The Hawks currently have Bower and Jewell who both have had starts. They also have Niemann and Perry who have both seen a decent bit of positional action and quite a lot of action on special teams. Mends is a guy who already has a year in the program, made a lot of noise this past spring, and is definitely an "up and comer." In addition to all those guys - we also have a number of new true freshman who could prove to be impressive players ... namely Hockaday, Jinning, and Garbutt. Heck, I wouldn't sleep on Sobotka - he was quite a gamer in high school and was an impressive multi-sport athlete.

The main thing that impeded Iowa's LBs last year was inexperience and tentative play. It sounds like Coach Reid has taken the bull by the horns and is redirecting them accordingly.

I like the move. They needed more TEs especially since Duzey and Krieger-Coble are seniors. I wouldn't be surprised if he sees the field this year.

Additionally, given that Iowa used A LOT of 2 TE sets and even occasionally some 3 TE sets ... there will be that much more opportunity. I haven't heard too much about Pekar and the only guy with game experience is Kittle. Wisnieski will likely be good ... but we're not very deep at the spot if we can only count on Wisnieski and Kittle. Past those guys, after this year, we'll only have Pekar, Vejvoda, and now Outsey.
