Sooo, with the trials on the horizon, I see Mr. COX is cutting to 86kg??? Herbert, now Dake and Taylor in the mix, and isn't he a huge 197lber? Interesting and just a different topic since we're still close to our tourney finish...discuss

Wow, that is interesting news. I was thinking he was big for 97 also. I don't see him being in the mix with the top 3, but I could be wrong.

Yikes! Guys a brute at 197, and the rumor (probably why they call it a rumor) was that Cox was contemplating HWT. at Mizzou this last year (those days are gone with Snyder in the mix I would imagine..... though I think Cox has a win over Snyder at 197, but who knows).

There's a ton of seasoned vets at this weight. It's probably the deepest weight class in the US. It was always thought that Cox would go up to Hwt but with the emergence of Snyder Cox best bet is to go down. Physically he is a freak but I don't see him making a deep run at this weight this time around. What stinks is DT and Dake will probably be the 2 and 3 seed. It'd be nice to have them separated but I'm sure we'll be tortured more with Herbert as the 1 seed.

Would much rather see Dake and Taylor meet in the finals. Herbert has been a great wrestler both collegiately and in freestyle, but he is past his prime and I do think that Dake or Taylor would have more success internationally at this point.

Why all the Northwestern "hate"? ;)

No way he makes that cut. Which arm is he going to cut off? He complained about managing his weight for 197. How in the world does he get down to 184? I am calling it BS!

I thought 189.5, could be wrong. I'm not sure either, because isn't Ruth at that weight also? It's stacked, and I know Snyder is the man above, but why not take your chance with him then with many others? I know that Cox wrestled several times at Hwt his sophomore year, and if Snyder would have stayed put at 97, he'd be up there now possibly. And lionlover, Cox already tweeted it, so you know it's true if it's on social media, lol. Regardless, whoever is going to be able to make the trials (not me unfortunately) is going to have a great weight to watch throughout. The entire event should be great, especially since it's in CHA, God's country.

Yep.

So here are your 2016 Olympic Freestyle Weight Classes converted ............................(assuming I didn't screw the math up!)

57kg = 125.663 lbs

65kg = 143.3 lbs

74kg = 163.142 lbs

86kg = 189.598 lbs

97kg = 213.848 lbs

125kg = 275.578 lbs

(Greco weight classes are 59, 66, 75, 85, 98, 130 kg)

I am betting on Herbert to take it and Varner (not sure if he is wrestling) takes Snyder.

Always interesting upset in an olympic year.

Like Dennis's chances too.

Be cool to have Ramos, Dennis and Metcalf as the starting 3. JB is the guy. Herbert, Varner, green and Tarvel round it out. Dennis and green are pretty open classes. I like the Varner/Snyder match up.

Trials should be fun ....

Snyder has Varner's number.

57KG-Ramos or DD
65KG-Metcalf, Green, Streibler
74KG-That fella from Nebraska
86KG-Dake...although it will be interesting to see what Cox can do if he makes it. He and Snyder used to have some tough matches in freestyle.
97KG-Snyder
HWY-Tervel...Going to be cool to see what Gwiz can do

Varner is pretty good. Olympic year.
It gets weird out there.

I'm not so sure that Cox even finishes in the top 5 this year. That's no dis to him, it's just a loaded weight and only two weeks to focus on the weight and freestyle. I don't see him being much of a contender to be honest.

Herbert
Dake
Taylor
Ruth
Reader
Caldwell
Foster
Gavin
Richard Perry
Trotman

I'm not following? You know Ramos and Dennis are at the same weight right?

I'm with ya on Varner. All signs point to Snyder and I've never liked Varner but I just think Varner is wrestling better than last time they went at it and will get his revenge. Cant explain it, just see it coming.

I'll admit, I don't really follow freestyle at all, where's McD?

Like Chopper said, he was injured. Had knee surgery and hasn't qualified for trials. I think we'll see him looking for a coaching job in the near future (just a hunch).

If true, that is pretty stunning. Hard to see him getting to 86kg.
Its not like he was a 125#. He's a 200lb + guy that was making 197 and competing a couple hours after weigh ins. An extra 8lb cut with a day before weigh in doesn't seem that big a deal to me. He'll have plenty of time to rehydrate and a full night's rest to recover before competing. That day before weigh in/limited competition schedule/allowances at many events are reasons a lot of guys compete at lower weights than their collegiate weights when they hit the international circuit... that and World Champs in your way to make team.
*edit* posted this before seeing it was addressed later in the thread

I fully expect Cox to be competitive/look to take the spot if he can make the weight without damaging his body. Day before weigh ins really do help the cause - he will likely be more than 20 pounds heavier than Kyle Dake when they wrestle (it looks like that may be a first round match up). Cox also holds a win over Snyder in free style from a few years ago - he's no slouch in that style either.

Yea, woke up and my memory returned.
Kids, don't mix late night whiskey, old movies and a lap top. EVER.

The USA site still has him at 61.
Which he probably is for non-Olympic events. I don't know all the particulars as far as the 2 additional weight classes (I think its 2 more right????) when the Olympic cycle isn't in play (Worlds the same way?? - I don't honestly know and not important enough to look it up...............).

I like Taylor as much as anyone (see previous threads), but I don't see how in the world he'd be able to beat Cox. Dudley's size gave him problems this year, Cox would ragdoll Dudley.

Other people like Reader, Gavin, and Herbert I see beating Cox.

Cox seems to have managed his weight very well, he often tired late in matches his first two years. You didn't see that this year, he's been prepping for this for awhile. I think he'll be fine at 86kilos. That said, there's a lot of studs in that bracket. Can't wait!

The 1 day weigh-in helps these guys tremendously. Ramos/Dennis are wrestling 125, Metcalf 143, etc. I think Chase Pami was a 157lb runner-up and he was wrestling 143 for a little while as well. I wouldn't think Cox would have a terrible time wringing out the extra weight and replenishing. I also think that his style of wrestling fits freestyle a little better than folkstyle. He conserves energy well until he explodes through big moves, much like the ruskies.

Dake is our brightest young hope besides JB. Kyle walks around at 185. No way he handles the strength of Herbert. Especially, 2 out of 3! Cox is very tough. A bit green right now,lots of upside. He won't be top 3! I like Dennis at 25 also. I also think Retherford wins 65. Zain is a former world cadet champ,I think.

Oh, Zain must have ordered your book How to Beat Logan Stieber.

I definitely see your logic here. Rutheford is like 0 for 100 against Pico. Pico just got what 6th at the us open and got straight smoked by Reece H. Rutheford doesn't even come close to getting a medal.
