Jess Settles complained about the food available at CHA. The complaints were kidding but on the square. CHA has poor amenities.

The food sources seem more like nostalgia or tradition. A coldish hot dog and a warmish Coke. CHA too new to be a classic but no longer suits is purpose.

Because CHA's design (and even location) is conceptually dated, even significant upgrades would only make it marginally better. It would be throwing good money after bad.

The 5 year plan should be to fill that f*cker in and replace it with an approx 10,000 seat basketball dedicated arena closer to the heart of campus. If done right, it could instantly become one of the gems of the league. See e.g., Texas.

Simple question--why does Carver work for women's games but is not so great (recently) for men's?

Obviously because of the tremendous success the women’s program has had the last few years.

It can also be true that Carver is not conducive to creating a great atmosphere when you only have an above average team. It would be nice to have an arena that still provides a great atmosphere even if your team is not one of the top 5-10 in the country like our women’s basketball teams of late and our wrestling program.

I’m not a structural engineer by trade, but it’s in a bowl, in the ground.. why not excavate the lower half and completely revamp it.. have mid point concessions.. build seating closer to the floor, install suites.. keep the upper half of course
Or just fill it in like an old in ground swimming pool….🤪

What is the root cause?

Location - Nope. There are numerous arenas on the edge of campus that fill up and are electric. Hilton Col. comes to mind.

Student seating isn't very good - Nope. Look at where students sit at Mackey.

Food sucks - Nope. Not enough food stations. Doesn't help but that's not it.

Younger families spend there money on other entertainment - A contributor

TV coverage is available for all games and start times aren't always conducive to attending - A contributor

Climate change - has to be a part of the problem, everything negative that happens today is because of climate change.

Men's basketball has lost it's lustre - Ah, a Big part of it. When the Hawks use to win and were true contenders, CHA was filled. If you win, they will come.

For me at almost 6' 5", the seats aren't as comfortable as my recliner and an 85" screen.

only one word necessary, parking

I think you are trying to hard to find only one or two reasons why the men get crappy attendance.

I think it's all of those, except maybe climate change and the food. And, forget the reasons why people don't go to the games - you have to have a REASON TO GO, and there really aren't many reason to go to a men's noncon game. It's just not as much fun as a sports bar or a family room or doing almost anything else.

Yep. But a couple of other thoughts come to mind as well.

Money

And

Where would you put it?
If money was not a problem, I would put it down near Hancher, I don't know what that old brick building is south of Hancher, but it doesn't look like it's in use. That should be a decent amount of room, with multiple access points to the Hancher parking lot, but parking is still the biggest issue.

The problem with Carver isn’t Carver. Stale product is stale. That is the problem. Many people don’t want to watch a bunch of not-athletic guys chuck up threes while not playing d. If they are having an off shooting night, the product is unwatchable. Not spending time and money to see that.

Aside from the seating, the design, the fanbase, the food, the complete joke of a noncon schedule, and the coach, the mens program is doing great.

They just built a new wrestling facility that attaches to Carver via a tunnel. Carver, sadly, ain't being replaced anytime soon.

I have trouble spending money for me and my family to drive over from DSM in the middle of the week to watch Iowa play Eastern Turd University. It’s also difficult to get too emotionally invested when the absolute peak of this program is getting to the round of 32. Even that is very unlikely to happen this year.

How Fran expects anyone to show up at Carver with Iowa’s non conference home schedule is beyond me (excluding Iowa State).
Frankly, if the students didn't show up when we had the (almost) two time college basketball POY and the quality of the other players McCaffery has put on the floor over the years, if that's not enough to get them off their phones and out of their dorm rooms, I think it's a lost cause. Getting to the Sweet Sixteen isn't going to sway those kids. We're not the only big time school that is struggling with attendance. If you watch any amount of college basketball, you will see a lot of half full arenas.

Simple answer - the men didn't just have the best basketball player of all time.
Was at a recent women's game and would guess actual attendance at 5-6k not bad for non conf but no where near the last few seasons. I expect them to have their own challenges of filling to anywhere near capacity going forward.

Smaller venue, better location, better amenities and get the students near the floor. Boom!

It won't necessarily increase MBB attendance, but a menu upgrade would be nice...other Universities take a little more pride in theirs:

  • Pulled pork mac and cheese: A dish at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Apple fritter pulled pork sandwich: A local dish at the University of Washington
  • Sushi: A fan favorite at Stanford
  • Personal pizzas: A fan favorite at Stanford
  • New England clam chowder: A popular food at Boston College
  • Chicken Fiesta Salads: A popular food at BYU

At what game this season did the Iowa women only have 5-6 thousand? That had to be their exhibition. I have been to all of their games and the crowds have much, much bigger than that.

Maybe I missed some other talk but the food I heard him complaining about was the free food given to the press/ announcers.

Xtreme Arena in Coralville--basketball capacity 5,100--is calling.
