Jewell doesn't make Butkus Award finalists list

Did it hurt him how well the defense played at Northwestern without him? The defense gave up 10 points in regulation in a loss.

Looking at that list and seeing two Big Ten linebackers, will he even be first team all-conference? This list just shows that it has more to do with the name on your jersey than your performance on the field. Pathetic.

Chad Greenway and Pat Angerer have spoke their disbelief on social media good for them because I doubt any the staff members will because they know it's because of record

While I agree its f***ing joke, i think a few games really looked bad. Barkley going for over 300 didnt help same with Montgomery making so many guys miss. Might not have Jewell on the back, but it sticks out

He was a Butkus finalist last year while earning 2nd team All B1G honors. Will probably earn First Team All B1G honors this year, with the possibility of earning B1G Defensive Player of the Year Award or could go to Josh Jackson and not being a finalist for Butkus award this year. WTH?!!!

Makes absolutely no sense in the decisions by the Butkis committee. What a travesty.

Reminds me of the case of Tim McGarigle, about a decade back. McGarigle put up otherworldly production for Northwestern ... but was barely on the radar of folks on the awards circuit.

In addition to big numbers, folks want to see eye popping measurables too. In the eyes of folks who evaluate things for the awards circuit, Jewell's production is likely viewed as a product of Iowa's system. Furthermore, it would be hard for him to shake the stereotype of being a slow dude who overachieves. In their eyes, he's a nice story ... but he's not necessarily the "real deal."

It makes sense to me. The team needs to be very good or else the player’s overall value comes into question. Dez doesn’t win the Thorpe if Iowa is sitting at 6-5.

Last time I checked football was a team sport. I don't think one linebacker, no matter how talented, can make up for how bad the other areas of the team might be. If you want to make the award go to the best linebacker on a team in the top 15 then go ahead. Don't call it an award for the best linebacker in the country and leave Jewell off of it.

I mostly agree and I think it’s criminal he’s not a finalist. But individual awards have always gone to players on good teams. Think about the Heisman. I can understand the media not wanting to celebrate great players on boring, mediocre teams.

Iowa is a boring, pedestrian team this year.

Don't get me wrong, I do understand that most of the players that win these awards are on a good team. It just feels like a robbery for Jewell not to be on this list.

For one of the few times you posted, Ghost I can't agree with that at all. JJ was a pre-season 1st team AA. He has been on every defensive watch list, a finalist for the Bednarick, and another one I forgot. Mid -season AA. Several times BIG defensive player of the week, and at least once or twice was the national defensive player of the week. Its not possible to say he was not on everyones radar. He is the ONLY returning finalist from last years top five, and he missed a game and a half, and still crushed all of these finalists in every category.Ridiculous ommission now matter how you look at the numbers.

I haven't watched the other guys play so I can't say one way or the other. Stats never tell the whole story. Maybe Jewell's stats were higher because Iowa's defense was on the field so much? Or maybe when those other guys made plays they changed the outcome of the game? I don't know, but it definitely helps to be surrounded with other good defenders who take care of their assignments as well as an offense that doesn't force defenders to play for 40 minutes in a single game. But without a doubt, he's one of the great Hawkeye linebackers of all time. We're going to miss him next year more than we can even imagine right now.

Which? Or both? Mightve been both. But i think it was stats thing. He had a ton of tackles both games
Of course its a stats thing, and I get that he's on the field a lot in some games because our offense has been missing a bunch this season. That doesn't change the fact that he makes plays all over the field, including passes defended, which was not in the stats provided. I just don't see how the guy can be a first team AA pre-season, and mid season, be a finalist for every other defensive award, and the only returner from last years top five and be left off. Makes no sense. The only logical explanation is what other posters have said that its because Iowais not a top team. Thats not what these awards are supposed to be for according to their own paramaters.

Like it or not the Trump card regarding anything NCAA is winning football games. People laugh about the amount of shady stuff Saban does..... because he wins games.

Yeah this is an absolute joke the nearest guy with in tackles is 21 behind this is a joke unbelievable yeah but you know the good news for Josey is the fact that he'll probably go very high in the draft
