Jewell doesn't make Butkus Award finalists list

Chris Borland in 2011 posted 143 tackles, 19 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 2 INTs, and 5 FF and was not a Butkus finalist. Two Bama LBs with much less impressive stat lines were finalists. These award lists are often questionable. Jewell definitely should’ve been included

For one of the few times you posted, Ghost I can't agree with that at all. JJ was a pre-season 1st team AA. He has been on every defensive watch list, a finalist for the Bednarick, and another one I forgot. Mid -season AA. Several times BIG defensive player of the week, and at least once or twice was the national defensive player of the week. Its not possible to say he was not on everyones radar. He is the ONLY returning finalist from last years top five, and he missed a game and a half, and still crushed all of these finalists in every category.Ridiculous ommission now matter how you look at the numbers.
I mostly agree with you. I think that Jewell is terrific ... but I also think that Jewell has to battle perception. I think that folks watch some of his misses against Barkley ... and then they just don't see him as being as "explosive" or "athletic" as some of the other candidates.

Also, I'm not saying that the national perception is accurate or fair either.

Part of what helped Jewell last year is that the Hawks finished the regular season with a roar. This season ... not so much!

I'm sure Jewell would have traded any potential award weeks ago for an offense that produces at even a mediocre level because the team would be 10-2 now, and headed for a new year's six bowl game at least. That said, the people who chose the finalists need to find something else to do with their time because they clearly lack the needed wisdom and discernment to do the job.

OK, if the national perception is such, then why was he named a finalist for the Nagurski, and the other one. Why was he named a mid season AA? These guys just blew it, plain and simple.

Josh Jackson a finalist for the Thorpe

And he wasn't on any preseason or midseason watch lists.

For the other posters in this thread (not you, Eppy :) ) is that travesty of justice as well? Maybe Jackson just outperformed the competition he had at corner by the end of the season and maybe Jewell's competition outperformed him -- in terms of impacts on games. Like I said, I haven't seen those finalists play but they are likely a pretty impressive group. Also, they may play in schemes where they are not primarily responsible for tackles. I don't know, but it's because I don't know that I can't say it's a travesty of justice that he didn't make the list. It might be in some way, but how would you know?

ESPN doesn't like Josey either. Watching Purdue-Indiana game. They are talking about PU's MLB being a 3 time captain. Then they list the current 3 time captains in college football.
Like the Butkus finalist list, there seems to be a name missing.......

meh it's an mistake/oversight. Iowa fans need to stop taking everything so personal.

The problem is, when they miss this badly on one it really harms the prestige of these awards if you ask me.

All I can say is in watching that Michigan/OSU game and seeing that Bush kid out of position al game long no way should he been mention in same sentence as Jewell. I believe he miss more tackles than he made and that's a fact
