IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell and junior defensive back Josh Jackson have been named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) All-America team Monday afternoon.

This is the fourth time in five years Iowa has had an FWAA All-American (King, 2015; Scherff, 2014; Scherff, 2013) and first time in that span that Iowa has had two first-team All-Americans.

Jewell and Jackson become the 24th and 25th consensus All-Americans in Iowa history. This year marks the fifth time in program history that a pair of Hawkeyes earned consensus All-America honors in the same season. Jewell and Jackson join Robert Gallery and Nate Kaeding (2003), Eric Steinbach and Dallas Clark (2002), Chuck Long and Larry Station (1985), and Andre Tippett and Reggie Roby (1981).

Jewell, a native of Decorah, Iowa, was named a Walter Camp Foundation first-team All-American, Associated Press first-team All-American and was recipient of the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Jack Lambert Award. Jewell earned first-team all-conference honors by Big Ten coach and media and Associated Press. He leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally in tackles (125 total, 11.4 per game). Jewell is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. In addition, he was a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Butkus Awards.

Jewell is the third Hawkeye in program history to have three seasons with at least 115 tackles (Larry Station 83, 84, 85; Abdul Hodge 03, 04, 05). Jewell has led the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons (126 in 2015, 124 in 2016).

Jewell has 426 career tackles, fifth all-time in program history.

Jackson, a native of Corinth, Texas, is tied as the national leader with seven interceptions and earned all-conference recognition for the first time and was named a first-team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation and Associated Press. He leads the nation with 25 passes defended and is tied for second in interception return touchdowns (two), and pass break-ups (18). He ranks third in interception return yards (163). Jackson’s seven interceptions rank fourth best for a single season at Iowa, just one from tying Iowa’s single-season record (Desmond King, 2015; Lou King, 1981; Nile Kinnick, 1939).

Jackson tied Iowa’s school record with two interception returns for touchdowns (B.J. Lowery, 2013) at Wisconsin, covering 43 and 52 yards. The previous week, Jackson tied Iowa’s school record with three interceptions in Iowa’s 55-24 win over No. 3 Ohio State. Jackson also had a forced fumble at Wisconsin, and a blocked field goal in a win over North Texas. He has started all 12 games this season and recorded 47 tackles. Jackson is a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award.

Iowa (7-5) is bowl eligible for the 16th time in the last 17 seasons. The Hawkeyes will meet Boston College (7-5) in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27 (4:15 p.m. CT). Tickets are available at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.

Lanning as a 1st team LB. FWAA should lose their status for a year for that one.

Kid did well for a 1st year LB, but common. Guy didn’t even make 1st team all conference. What a joke.
Yep, in his 1st year playing LB since 8th grade. He is on multiple AA teams. That has to be disheartening knowing what he accomplished in just one year compared to others that have played all four years.

LOL, 2nd team “All Purpose”, aka, the feel good story selection. Guy didn’t even make 1st team all conference.

Ya, Iowa kid from Ankeny, IA, maybe take off your Iowa glasses and give the kid a break. lol Apparently alot of others, including Josey Jewell, thought it was pretty impressive accomplishment transitioning from QB to LB, and tied for 2nd in tackles in conference in year 1.

So how do you feel about the Jacob Park shitshow? Guy has a bad game against Texas, the head coach bodychecks him as he comes out, he gets benched for "health" reasons, season ends, he gets trashed by ISU fans, turns out he's a druggie, decides to transfer, good riddance from ISU. Wow. He was the golden boy at the start of the season. Culture change for sure. Don't play shitty against Texas future ISU QBs.

It is comical when folks post something with absolutely no idea about what they are posting.

Nobody here saying it wasn’t impressive. I think most on here have acknowledged the success of the position switch if not outright cheered for the guy as he seems to be a pretty standup college senior and local guy.

But everyone knows he wasn’t an all American linebacker, except for apparently Cyclone fans and the FWAA. The only reason he was 2nd team “all purpose” player on SI is because he was a feel good story taking a few snaps from center and running 3-5 yards at a time. Good for him I guess, but he wasn’t even a 1st team all conference linebacker, let alone an all American.

You did not get anything wrong Gonzo. Little brother is up past his bedtime and is not thinking straight.
Both of you got it wrong as usual. You fall in the category that many things reported about us is wrong, but most things written about others is accurate.

I know this has probably been asked previously, but, how many unanimous all-Americans has Iowa had?

Ya, just to clarify, he was 1st team All Big 12 on the AP team. And an all American.

There are multiple all american teams that are voted on by panels, he was mentioned on 3 all american teams, so apparently some think he's worthy of recognition. A warrior and playmaker, not bad for his 1st year.

He had a solid year, but in all honesty if he hadn't gotten all the pub for the switch from QB to LB, and played some at both vs Oklahoma, he would have been just as unnoticed as a good player on any mid level team usually is.

The clown football program is one of the worst programs in the history of college football. That statement is not wrong. The Hawkeyes have one QB who has more bowl victories than the clown football program. True statement. Mom wants you off the Iowa board as it makes you look jealous and obsessed with big brother. Very true. She is getting pissed.

Pretty damn impressive career! The great thing is NO ONE, even JJ himself would ever have imagined any of this a few years ago! Wow, what a story, to go from probably playing football at Luther college with his brother, and cleaning up Turkey poop on the farm, or a career as an NFL LB. I have no doubt if his life would have gone down the former road, he would have been a happy upstanding young man! Good luck to the Outlaw.....:)

He made first-team all-conference AP, was second team coaches' pick. I think it isn't surprising the writers -- AP and FWAA -- rated him higher, because he got a great deal of positive national publicity. The idea he didn't win the Hornung award is ludicrous.

Is he first-team AA if this is his fourth year at the position? Probably not, although he had a very good year. But his performance is outlandish considering he hadn't played defense since 8th grade.

In a somewhat related note vis-a-vis all-star teams.....A lot of ISU fans were moping around after the season at their disappointment in Chase Allen, freshman tight end who's the son of Terry. Started most all year, but never did anything. Only had four catches, total, all season.

So who is second-team all-conference at tight end on the coaches' team? Yup.

Odd how those things work out. He WAS a very good blocker, but that doesn't usually translate to all-star teams. It would be interesting to see the vote totals. The kid who was first team is from Oklahoma and I think is a consensus AA, so maybe a whole bunch of guys got votes for second and Allen had the most from that bunch.
