Joey Brackets says Hawks are done when they meet Oregon..........

Have you really watched Garza and doubles? He forces it a lot trying to get through doubles instead of kicking it out. If they play Oregon, the good thing is he should be able to see over doubles and not force things.
Theres been about 4-5games all season where he didn’t face constant doubles. Could he be a better passer out of them, definitely. But he scores just fine against them, hence his npoty

Probably because they have the best shooting percentage in the Pac 12. 37% from 3 and 53% from 2 and their guards are more athletic.
It's going to take a heckuva lot more than that to even stay close to Iowa, let alone beat them.
I'd say that it's much more likely UO loses to VCU than Iowa loses to GCU.

You guys are ridiculous. Can Iowa lose to either team before the sweet 16? Of course, college basketball is weird and unpredictable, however the BIG was loaded this year and the PAC was terrible. Oregon would be in the mid to bottom tier in the BIG. I’ve seen a good amount of PAC 12 games this year and they aren’t even close to what the BIG brings night in and night out. Just relax and enjoy the ride

He's been doubled a TON this season. Usually handles it well. Of course he's going to have SOME bad plays too.

If he couldn't handle the doubles, every team would simply double him ALL game. He finds open teammates and they make teams pay

I think some "experts" are writing off Iowa early because of a perceived lack of defense and/or athleticism. They aren't necessarily wrong, but Iowa has improved enough that 75 points will win the vast majority of games. Iowa's defense will never be truly "elite" unless they pull in some more elite athletes.

And it's March Madness. People pick crazy upsets all the time because they do happen on occasion, even when there is a huge overall talent discrepancy. It's not uncommon for a player to hit 2/3rds of their 3PT attempts in one game and help their team pull off a stunning upset, but go ice cold the next and their season is over.

I almost wonder if Iowa would prefer Oregon to VCU. I'm thinking that VCU's harassing style of defense might disrupt Iowa. Particularly if they are able to play physical and Iowa isn't able to draw fouls. I thought the real difference in the Illinois game is that Illinois created turnovers by harassing our guards.

I took the opportunity to watch the condensed version of Oregon vs O St in the Pac12 Championship. Oregon probably most reminds me of Maryland (when Maryland was playing well) which means they can beat anyone on a given day. Based on that limited viewing and my even more limited knowledge of basketball this is what I see:

Biggest mismatch/problem for us is when we are on defense. The 6'6" post player for Oregon can hit the 3 and can drive to the basket...he is reasonably quick and athletic. In a man to man situation this could get Luka in foul trouble and/or allow their guy to have his way. The rest of the team is also pretty athletic and can shoot the 3 or drive.

So, what we have to do (assuming both them and us make it that far) is play good defense, limit turnovers, rebound at a high level and hit our our outside shots...because the only two ways they stop Luka is sagging in on defense or getting him in foul trouble. Altman is a good coach and I am sure he will have a good game plan. Anything could happen in that game.

Oregon St beat them by hitting a lot of 3s, playing good man to man, and matching their athleticism....OST went away from their big center(Luka size) and went with a 6' 7/8" husky lad who was also pretty athletic.

Is he basing this off some matchup issue they present for us or just a gut feeling based on history and Oregon being (likely) seeded too low for their talent level?

if the former I’d listen but if one of the latter reasons, he can GFH.
I think it is that they are underseeded based on the fact they have been a lot better since they got one of the players back. I think on only a day to prepare they can pose some problems because of their funky defense they play. Plus they have a lot of shooters. I remember a few years ago when KU had the better team than Oregon but when they met on only a day's prep KU was struggling to figure out their defense and Oregon got hot from 3 and that was all she wrote. That team though had some really good shot blockers that this Oregon team doesn't. They do have big guards though.

Both Oregon and VCU are on the short side and will rely on trapping/doubling and pressing (particularly in VCU's case) on defense.

Both will have to double Garza so it's gonna be on our shooters to, ya know........make open shots.

If Iowa plays Oregon. Oregon will hack Garza and consistantly put a body on him to wear him down. They have the athletic guards and wings to try and bottle up Iowa's guards and shooters. They also have the athleticism to drive the ball and the shooters to shoot. They will drive the ball to try and pick up fouls especially on Garza. They know if they can knock Garza out for chunks of the game they have the ability to stall our offense.

If this game happens it will be about can Garza stay on the court and dominate? If he does Iowa will control this game. If not its a 50/50 game. Duarte is a stud (3rd team all-American). Iowa needs to stop him. After Richardson got back this team started playing like a top 20 team. If it happens this game will be close but like the Wisconsin games Iowa will pull it out in the end.

I wish Iowa had a quicker backcourt. I think JT has the quickness but not the consistency. I believe that can be worked on though.

Best part is with all our dudes on social media all the time, they know the noise that is out there. Still sticking by two wins by double digits.

By the way, how is everyone overlooking VCU? They are no slouch.

Another thing, didn't pretty much this exact same team beat Oregon with Peyton Pritchard and Bol Bol?

Eventually 67 of the teams are done when they face “somebody”. It’s easy to throw that against the wall over and over and be correct eventually.

You don't have to "shut down Garza" to beat Iowa.....I bet Iowa opponents understand this. Make it tough for Iowa to get the ball inside deep to him....make the outside shooters beat you,,,,

Opponents have tried to make it difficult to feed Garza but with limited success. This why commentators are continually harping on the value Connor brings to Iowa. Now if Connor can knock down some shots going forward, I think a run to the E8 is very possible.

Even if Luka is doubled, no one is going to grab, hip-check, and flat out shove like guys he’s faced all season. He should score at will.

The other side of that coin worries me more - that tourney refs will call Garza body fouls for contact which is common contact in the Big Ten..... then all of a sudden he has 2 quick fouls fouls and has to sit for most the first half.

With great consternation, I started using readers a couple of years ago. I am used to them and now and I wonder why I didn't start wearing them sooner. Much better than squinting.
I have contacts but I quit wearing them about a year ago. That way all I have to do is take of the glasses. I only wear my contacts now if I am playing golf.

Am I the only Hawkeye fan that is more worried about the potential Oregon/VCU matchup with us than potentially playing Kansas/USC in the 3rd round if we get there?

After getting beat twice by IU I think it's safe to say that the Hawks shouldn't be looking past anyone. Are we favored? Yes. Could we be upset? Yes. Bottom line you better come to play every game from here on out....
Great point about Indiana. Jackson-Davis is their tallest player at 6’9”. Race Thompson isn’t next and he gave Iowa fits.

I am VERY Scared of that game...IF we make it there.
we simply can't take any opponent lightly

my gosh, being a #3 seed 15 years ago still haunts me. Remember how excited we were to be playing in the NCAA Tournament? and then we lose....to a #14 seed.

and i can guarantee you, if Iowa comes out flat, Fran will call time out & go ape sheet on the team

Fran's Siena teams upset the favored teams.

He won't take any team lightly.

This is a good 5 1/2 minute watch:

Watch:

I really enjoy Fran interviews! Dave says something to the effect of... "every coach looks at their seeding and asks how they were treated".

Fran throws it back and says... "Seeds are completely irrelevant".

He's right (to an extent) all these teams are HUNGRY, especially teams that don't play on national tv all year and might take things for granted.

But there's obviously a talent difference, which is why we SHOULD win on Saturday.

If Iowa does Iowa things, they'll win in the first three rounds. It's completely up to them.
