This is not a shot at Coach McCaffery or a slight at Iowa basketball. I want to make that clear.

Beilein has done such a great job with the Michigan program. I have made my opinion known about this topic several times but look at the adjustments that were made tonight. He completely eliminated the guard play on defense and his guys contested so many of our 3s. He gets guys that are athletic and great defenders but nobody who can take over a game on offense. He finds guys who can run his sets on offense to where it isn't boring Lick ball but affective, efficient offense.

Michigan is lucky to have that guy.

I was just telling my dad and brother this. I think Beilein is a fantastic coach. Would love to have him. He gets the most out of his teams and they always seem ready come tournament time.

He knows his strengths and his weaknesses. A couple of years ago, he recognized that their defense was subpar so he went out and hired a defensive coach and turned his defense completely over to him. Tonight during one time out, the only voice in the huddle was that of the defensive coach.

You can say that about any of the top 5 programs in college. You have to be a good coach and having the top players year in and year out will make a coach great. Duke, NC, Michigan, Kansas and Kentucky. Even Iowa could win every year if we had Dukes players every year....
IMO we could have Beilein as Iowa's coach and still not win the B1G every other year.

Agreed. Love the guard heavy game with serious emphasis on defense.

However, It does help to be able to recruit at the level he and Michigan have. It would be nice to roll with a 5 star forward and a load out of top 150 players to include nearly the entire bench.

It’s pretty awesome watching a team with great ball movement. They will have 3-4 guys touch it and immediately kick to the open person. That’s why they shoot the ball so well. It’s like the polar opposite of watching the Iowa guards dribble around with nowhere to go and then pick up the ball and desperately throw it somewhere. That’s how you get housed by 20 plus points when no other team loses by more than a few at this point in the conference tourney. Fran draws up out of bounds plays better than anyone else in the country but that’s about it.

One of those schools (namely, Michigan) isn't like the others. The last time Michigan signed a McDonald's All-American was in 2002.

What makes him successful is he won't play you until you have his system and ideology down to a T. He has guys that would be getting 20 plus minutes a game at Iowa who barely play or play only once in a blue moon. He is fine only playing 6-8 guys a game if he feels he only has that many who can currently play his system and style of play. I think it makes his players work their butts off.

That's what I was eluding to about his offensive philosophy. I agree with you.

I noticed that. Wish our coach could admit he just can't coach D and go find one who can....since we are stuck with him

Michigan fan here. Beilein is not under-appreciated in Ann Arbor. We know what we have. Before Beilein, we had a 10 year stretch w/o making the dance.
I didn't realize it was ten years but yeah....putting Michigan in that list of blue bloods in a previous post is a head scratcher. Beilein is proof what one good hire can do for a program. He's a great coach and a class act.

He was hired same year as Iowa hired Lick, Minny hired Tubby that year also.

Michigan picked wisely. .Iowa not so much

Beilein is the best coach in the conference and my favorite coach in the country.

The way his teams handles adversity, whether it is in game, after a loss or with injuries is a testament to him and the staff he has put together.

Pretty much everything I've read about Beilein in this thread makes him the "Anti-Fran" - fundamentals, defense, making adjustments, player rotations that make sense, classy, unassuming, assistants who aren't yes-men........what did I leave out?

Michigan does not always have Duke, Kentucky, or UNC, level players. For proof of that look where their program was before Belein took over. Tommy Ammaker had run it into the ground. It takes a top level coach (and according to the FBI payoffs) to attract to level talent. Coach McCaffery is not a top level coach and never will be; therefore, he has the talent equal to his abilities.
