Jon Budmayr Expected to be Named WR Coach

Sounds like the players really like Budmayer, so there's that.

What does a great WR coach teach? Cuts? Setting up a defender to take advantage and get separation? Blocking? Film study?

Honestly I don't know what you even look for. Strength and conditioning are obviously key, as is knowing the offense/routes, so where does the WR coach come in? What makes them great?

Purely a question.
What’s with this…the worst coaches always liked by our players? Why does this shit even come out?

I won say anything negative. Is he worthy of this role? Please discuss.
I have never, ever in my life cared about who the WR coach is and I'm not going to start now. Like, who was the greatest Iowa WR coach of all time? No clue.

Bud being a former QB could bring good perspective. Will also be good for him to get out of the office/booth and hands on with players on the field. I like that he can work directly with another former QB (ad HC) in trying to resurrect things.

I would argue that coaching TEs is much more difficult than WRs as you have to understand and teach fronts along with coverages and routes, etc. But, some on this board think we just magically roll TEs off the press.

How about the ability to recruit? Looking forward to all the future 2* wr recruits he brings in.

There is talent to work with, now development is the problem. You are blind if you look at the athleticism of Reece Vander Zee and KJ Parker and say they are 2* talents.

You may not care about the WR coach and maybe most other teams don’t either, but when we’ve had some of the worst WRs for years, you have to start evaluating. Coaches may love the Ragainis of the world, but when you’re a P5 WR and can’t create separation even against G5 opponents and are slow as hell, you have to be concerned.

I see Iowa WRs running open quite often. Recognizing it and delivering the ball has been an equal or greater problem as of late.

I agree with you in the sense that it's silly that this has been been such a weak spot for Iowa when WRs are truly a commodity when compared to other positions in FB.

KF making KF decisions.

What is funny is Brian Hartline at tOSU makes $1.6 million as their wide receiver coach which will be more than Iowa’s OC and probably wide receiver coach combined.

KF should be fired for malfeasance and his contract not paid out due to these hirings. This isn’t going to end well between KF, BG, and UI.
How hard is it to coach their recruits?

If you have a manager that everyone likes, he/she usually is not doing their job (in my experience). They just want to be friends/liked.

Did he catch any passes last year?

People are looking at this all wrong, Where else can You get almost a 100% certain guarantee on Your money? stock market? no, Retirement funds? no, But the Iowa under now that is an investment that all learned Men should cling to as one of the absolutes in life. The Gift from God just makes this a even more enticing Siren.

I don't remember if he caught any passes, but I held my breath when he took over for CDJ fielding punts.

Track stars don't automatically make good football players.

Lol that anyone was expecting next year to be any different.

I will partake of some crow, however and admit I was predicting Jon to be OC. I knew he would fail up, I just overshot how far. I should know better—never take the over on anything Iowa related.
KF is here until 2029, so Budmayr still has plenty of failing up he can do.

He is a gift from God. You don't just toss away a gift. Especially one from him.
I’ve done some research on this. It turns out that he’s actually a gift from Godfrey Jones. Kirk apparently misheard and has just been going with it.

I would put a large sum of cash that KF will not be here until 2029.
I think you’re underestimating Kirk Ferentz and his will to keep going.
You may also be underestimating his desire to put another $42,000,000 in the bank. Might as well take care of the great grandkids if you can.

35 million, but yeah I got ya. IMO, we have an AD and the TV revenue that won't let him rack up 7 win seasons and keep his job. We aren't Minnesota.

I know every season knocks another seven mil off of the total as well, so you’re probably right. I’ll have to work on shifting my expectations out of “AD Gary Barta” mode.
And thank God we’re not Minnesota.

As I’ve said before, I think hiring Bud as WR coach would be a missed opportunity, for a number of reasons.

If we are going to stay in-house for this hire, I would rather the job go to Jason Manson, who actually played WR a bit in his career, and has been a WR coach.

(For those who may have forgotten, Manson is currently on the staff as Director of Player Development.)

And, how many coaches wait until their contract is up before retiring? Does that time typically really ever come? I've often heard that extensions are normally given to keep at least a few years on a coach's current deal for recruiting purposes if nothing else.

So, I'd say it's likely that KF will end up leaving at least some money on the table, regardless of when he hangs it up.

I also doubt Iowa would have the appetite to buy out more than 1 yr of his contract and maybe not even that much. We aren't going to be sitting here 2 yrs from now wondering if Iowa will buy out his remaining 3 yrs / $21M. He will likely decide when he is out but he shouldn't.

There have been slow receivers in all of football, even nfl, but the successful ones could find a way to get separation and catch the ball

I don't think his contract will ever be an issue. They had a 7 million dollar surplus this year, and next year is when the massive TV deal really kicks in.

Never said the money wasn't there......I think it would be more of a Midwest value proposition where they wouldn't just throw money at the "problem." Unless season ticket sales, donations plummeted etc.....then maybe once you get a couple years out but not at $21M. Or a very large donor stepped in and paid it. I just don't see it happening.
