Josey Jewell's Highlights - Hudl

Fun to go back in time a bit before knowing what we know now.. The Outlaw Josey.

He has natural speed & instincts you just can't teach. Great awareness, acceleration, fundamental tackling. Loves him some contact. Bully of the BIG 10. Am I the only one who thinks he would be our starting FB if he wanted?

The outlaw doesn't get a lot of love on this board because about 80% of the poster had to eat crow on him,

Agreed but they all deny it now. Pepperman called our Lbers slow and unathletic just last preseason LOL

They are clueless

Well our LBs previous year were Alston (graduated), spearman (transfer) and bower (demoted to 2nd team). After 14' to be fair many were worried about LBs being an unknown with 2 Sophs and 5th yr senior with no starting experience. I don't see how ones opinion from previous pre season has any bearing to be brought up who hasn't even commented in this thread.

Going into last season Neimann didn't worry me. I did not know Jewell would be the type of player he turned out to be. Fisher was solid but replaceable.

That’s why people should reserve judgment and/or have Faith…....just sayin'

On offense, Josey moved from tailback to fullback his senior year at Decorah. Devastating blocker.

Great post WildTurk. I recall thinking he was so skinny that it would take some time to build that body, but man.............. that boy hit like a truck. He's been a great surprise and says a lot about our staff's ability to evaluate talent.

Thanks for sharing bro.

Why would anyone have to eat crow on an Iowa kid that had great success in high school and was offered and committed a day or two before signing day?
Because we all think we know what we are talking about and more often than not we are wrong, when that happens it should be standard procedure to eat crow and admit being an idiot. Some will not even do that, so the next step is for posters to continue to bring it up as often as possible. However, sometimes we are right and then we can gloat about it for a while

No college football coach at any level thought Josey was worthy of a scholarship until the day before signing day, when Kirk offered.

Fans shouldn't eat crow because they were skeptical. Had 10 other recruiting options for us have not fallen through, even Ferentz would not have offered Jewel, and he would be tearing it up at a IAA school like UNI. We were very fortunate to have taken a chance on a 2 star that paid off in a major way and should all be happy about it, not eating crow. People that year questioned offering 2 star Jonathan Parker as well, as his next best offer was Ball State. Should they eat crow for that? I think he played 5 downs last yr.

Only because some people did not think he was worthy of a scholarship.

Akrum Wadley, Ben Niemann, Josh Jackson, Parker Hesse, Matt Vandeberg among others say yes.....

And quite frankly Josey Jewel is like about 25 other two stars we put in the NFL that people complained about so no your story doesn't hold water.

If I remember right, didn't Kirk say on some interview that he was skeptical about offering Jewell, and Parker pretty much insisted that they offer. I am glad Kirk has complete faith in his staff.
Story goes that the entire staff went around the table with a YES/NO conversation about Jewell prior to offering. EVERY SINGLE coach was a NO...too slow, too small, played poor competition, etc...except for one...MORGAN. He sold everyone that Jewell was worth the schollie and here we are.

IOU1, Win Win Chicken Dinner! You are absolutely correct. Story goes Coach Morgan researched his most confidant of resources (handful of H.S Coaches he trust) and they all said Jewell was the best player in the state! His intangibles are off the board. The rest is history. Thanks.

The most amazing thing about Josey and most of these two stars and even most of the successful walk-ons is they typically contribute very early or not at all. Check back and look, Bob Sanders to Charles Godfrey, Brett Greenwood, Adam Robinson, Micah Hyde, Ben Niemann, Josey etc….except for possibly on the line there is really very little “development” that goes into it.

I mention because it has always amazed me and irritated me both. I understand Iowa is “developmental” U, but honestly how much developing really gets done when a kid hits the field in his Frosh or RS Frosh year? I think it’s a little disingenuous and an unintentional slight against the kid and his initial ability. It also belies the Truth that this staff is actually better at “evaluating” talent than they necessarily are developing it. At least in my mind…

Comparatively speaking I thought Jewel and Hesse’s vids were very similar. I told Marc Morehouse when Jewel came in I thought he had a chance to be very good and I thought the same about Hesse…

PS...I thought I’d add I’m not bragging and definitely not saying I told you so because I've thought a lot of kids that came in might be "really" good and they transferred out....:(

But what I don’t do is ever assume a kid WON’T be any good because they and this staff have proved that wrong countless times. They are above reproach recruiting wise at most positions…just not QB and WR…lol

I doubt there were many people complaining about Jewell. Maybe a few were mad that Iowa had to get a fall back but fans are really supportive of Iowa kids.

I got to be honest with you David I'm sure you laid down some brilliant prose above but you are so out of it and such a whiny poster I literally just skip whatever you write so I don't feel compelled to get involved in a circle jerk with you.

The people that I find have wisdom and knowledge and I enjoy talking to I get along with them fine we don't necessarily always agree but I respect them and they respect me. I don't need any input from you I'm not sure you could find your ass with both hands.

Carry on

Incidentally Iowa Law i'm sure you also had some real brilliant stuff to add but I didn't even bother scrolling up, sorry ....:)

Something I'm going to point out that a lot of my contemporaries will agree with. Ive noticed the Internet critic has a tendency to grab just a couple snippets of something you say and build a delusional case around just that. Often times completely changing the meaning or exaggerating what you said to the point that you feel like you have to get back in just to readdress and that's what I am no longer doing. I'm not reading the same dumb crap over & over again.

Everyone's entitled to piss and moan anonymously on the message board about meaningless crap like how bad their coaches are. They are also entitled to hear how stupid some of us think it is .......

I think that often we forget that message boards seldom change anyone's opinions.

I do remember that there was a fair amount of angst that Jewell was the best fallback option available to Iowa. Most of the blame was directed as the coaching staff, as recruiters.

Most of the doubt about Jewell, as a player, was whether he would be able to add enough weight, without losing speed, to be a B1G linebacker. The instincts and productivity were there. My co-worker who watched Decorah dismantle Heelan in the state championship came back very impressed with Jewell and thought Iowa should offer him a scholarship.

(Of course, being a Nebraska fan, he had to preface it by saying that Jewell "was the type of player that Nebraska would never offer." Given the success that Iowa has had with the Nebraska players that Nebraska didn't ever offer, I was okay with his statement.)

At the end of the day, this is what makes recruiting such a crapshoot. You don't want to build a whole roster of great intangible guys who might not have the size/speed to play. But you can't build a roster of the right size/speed guys if they don't have the right motor and instincts, either.

Eating crow was a backhanded compliment IMHO. Not worth more scrutiny than that unless you have a job where you can bill by the hour.

Awesome thoughts.....

I will add two thoughts, first I don't try to change anyone's mind anymore because you are right they don't change. They practice being pompous and "right" while calling others pompous and always right...LOL. Mostly I just antagonize them now, it's kind of a sport I guess.

And Jewel did need to add weight but I'm always shocked at how quickly some of these 2 star guys hit the field. And of these guys that hit the field they are often times the best athletes on the team.

On the other hand as I said if they don't play by Soph year at least they are typically a non-factor and usually transfer.

If this story is true, maybe Morgan should be the head coach, or at least make all the calls on who plays/starts.

"If the story is true" . Always a good way to preface a story.

I'd wager his hand is heavy in all decisions. That's how businesses management team's, sporting teams, etc, work

12 Angry Men?

Jewell was crucified on this board...I remember...but saw him play in high school and knew he had the attitude and work ethic to be great. That is why the highly regarded Spearman just left and didn't fight for the job. Jewell took over from day one and everyone knew it was his spot.

Thanks for the info, I couldn't remember which coach was on Josie's side.

Yep, I created a thread back when there was a recruiting section. I really wanted the Hawks to offer this kid. It's been a long time but I know I didn't have very many supporters.
