$5 says somehow the Senate (Chuck Grassley), blocks Obama from getting a replacement on the Supreme Court on in the next 9 months.

This is HROT. A $50,000,000 dollar bet would be meager enough, or 50,000,000 speech.

Obama better nominate someone. Chance to put a 5 vote liberal majority on the court.

Of course he will nominate someone. Getting the nomination through the Senate might not be so easy.

I hope so. Obama would screw us like he has on everything else.
Where in the Constitution does it say the Senate can drag something out for 9 months for partisan reasons. The Supreme Court has been a mixed bag for all presidents, but it is their right to nominate, and the job of the Senate to decide if they are fit to sit on the bench. It shouldn't be as hard as it has become.
Remember, President Bush wanted to nominate Harriet Miers, so don't get too full of yourself by saying Obama would pick a bad judge.

President Bush did nominate Miers and then withdrew her name 3 weeks later because of the feces-storm response.

LOL, so the Senate can block and tackle when a Republican is in the White House, but it's UNCONSTITUTIONAL for the Senate to do that when a Democrat is in the White House....

SSDD.

Seriously.....anyone with common sense knows that our Douche Bag POTUS will find the most Lefty wacko possible to nominate. Probably will be a good Lawyer with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Or better yet nominate himself. This is very serious that we get a level headed nominee. But I don't expect that from Obama.

Oh, when you take the time to thoughtfully explain it like that it makes sense.

Stuff like this makes me wonder why I even post here.

Please name all the potential Supreme Court justices nominated by republicans that did not get an up or down vote in the full Senate. TIA.

Other than Bork what nominee did the Democrats block? For the record Bork's shameful involvement during Watergate precluded him from being on the Supreme Court, so we won't agree there.
Heck, it was Republicans in the Senate that forced Bush to withdraw the nomination of Harriet Miers.

If Obama nominates someone he'll likely nominate someone who he thinks will make it through the Senate. They will likely lean left, but doubtful he nominates someone who is a far lefty.

Also the GOP would be wise to remember that if they filibuster an Obama nominee, the Democrats will have no problem filibustering a Republican nominee should a Republican win the White House.

Vegas just came with the odds of Obama's next SCOTUS nomination::

White male < 1%
White female 10%
Black Male 10%
Black female 20%
Other minority male 10%
Other minority female 25%
LGBT male 10%
LGBT female 10%
Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner < 5%

Lock in you bets now. I got black female.

Time taken from nomination by president to confirmation by senate:

Kagan: 3 months
Sotomayor: 2 months
Alito: 2 months
Meirs: withdrawn same month
Roberts: 2 months (well, two attempts at one month each)
Breyer: 2 months
Ginsburg: 2 months
Thomas: 3 months
Souter: 3 months
Kennedy: 3 months
Bork: 3 months (rejected 1987)
Scalia: 3 months
Rehnquist: 3 months
...
Iredel: 2 days (1790)
So, modern times are all around 2-3 months.

Obama undoubtedly has a list of candidates already. I assume all presidents have a list. Obama will knock off the far left candidates and go middle of the road. I think he will go for someone who has already been approved by the Senate. Very hard for the Senate to vote against someone who has been approved of during the last few years.
The political angle will be intense. The Senate could flip to the Democrats, and this is now a huge issue to voters in November. Who do you want picking justices?

My bets on potential nominees - Judges Denny Chin (2d Cir.), Sri Srinivasan (D.C. Cir.), or Diane Wood (7th Cir.). My money is on Judge Srinivasan.

Judge Srinivasan was unanimously approved by the senate a few years ago. Would be strange if they didn't now.

Those are notable candidates, and Wood's name has been thrown around before when Souter retired. She may be a little too far out on the spectrum to be confirmed. Chin and Srinivasan were born in other countries, so they have compelling life stories about coming to the US and succeeding.
One notable thing a lot of people have clamored for is putting judges on from outside the Ivy League. Srinivasan has a JD from Stanford, and Wood received her JD from Texas.

Naw...the mutant freak will hold out for something bigger...General Secretary of the UN.
That wasn't the question. It was can Obama nominate himself? Obama cannot nominate himself to a position at the UN. I'll give you a pity like for the effort, though.

It's vital we get someone opposite of Scalia. So, how about atheist, black, liberal, female?
