What happened to him? I’ve never seen a player go from playing so well and being the second best scorer on a team to being a complete liability. He looks lost out there on defense and is hesitating on a lot of open looks.

I wish his sophomore slump came at the beginning of the year rather than the end. I was glad to see one of his shots go in late. Needed that

Unfortunately, in the last several games he's become like a 7th or 8th man as far as an offensive threat when he needs to be the clear #2 offensive option behind Luka.
Amazing they were able to make it a fight to the end tonight.

Iowa is not going to win by playing good defense. It's not in their skill set. They can win by playing just adequate enough D and cranking up the O. Without JW stepping it back up offensively, that formula is going to be tough to pull off.

What I am seeing isn’t a slump. Big ten teams have figured him out and he doesn’t have the game to really counter it. And unfortunately and to his detriment he seems to realize it. His ball handling and passing aren’t very good at this level. He is guardable, especially with help coming. But he needs to start catching and shooting. Nothing good is happening when he puts in on the floor and can’t get to the rim of find an open man. It’s sad to watch really. Rooting for him to get some swagger and start having some fun. I fear the season ends without that happening.

Correct answer

I wouldn't be surprised if he takes his game to another team. He's obviously not happy being the second fiddle to Luka and if Luka stays for his senior year, he'll again be the first option, second option, and maybe even the third option. I'm not even going to say I hope not because that's always a cop out.
Maybe he's injured and hyper extended his elbow at some point and is not fully healthy, gutting it out because there's no one else....
I guess we'll find out in a few months or so. Either way Iowa has a few more games to conclude the season and we can then look forward to next season and what could turn out as an outstanding if everyone comes back. Fingers crossed.

Legit sophomore slump.

But yes, we should bring him off the bench in our first BTT game to see how he reacts, and how the other team reacts.

Toussaint
Frederick
McCaffrey
Kreiner
Garza

I don't see why Kriener shouldn't be rewarded for his efforts of late, and send the message to Joe that he needs to get the f*** out of his own head (and into the weight room if at all possible)....................

Last 6 games:

14/53(26%)from the field.
3/21(14%) from 3.

The book is out. JW has to get better, but in his defense I think we finished the year with the most physical stretch of the season.

We will see if CJ and JW can come back next year with the strength it takes to play against teams that would prefer to put physical you than out basketball you. We can be a real good team even if they don’t, but to compete for a conference championship they are going to need some serious off season dedication.

People keep bringing up JW, but it's been 5 weeks since CJF has topped 10 points in a game!! :(

I think the biggest reason we lost the last two games was not finishing defensive possessions with a rebound. I think Weesy was not the biggest culprit for those boards. I would look at the bigs others than Luka. Tonight was RK's worst game in a while.

Sorry but I don't go along with this theory about playing second fiddle to garza.

I'm hoping that's not the case also, was just putting it out there.
But seriously is seems every year Fran's team overachieves through the months of January and half of February, gets our hopes up with a possible top 4 finish in the Big Ten and then craps the bed and finishes on a downer.
This year, the players fought like crazy and still managed to finish the seasons last 9 games at 4 and 5. OK, this season was grueling, going against a Big Ten no one has seen.....ever. So having a short bench Fran has done a great job in getting this team to overachieve again, Iowa was predicted anywhere between 8th and 12th and finished tied for 5th.
Garza has been a beast, and has played like no other player at Iowa in some 40 years and Fredrick/Toussaint has played up to preseason expectations.
Looking forward to Thursday and beyond. The NCAA tournament could be something to behold with so many Big Ten teams projected to be included.
Luka, ending the year possibly #8 on Iowa's all time scoring list and less then 500 points from Roy Marble's leading total, could be a great incentive for him returning for his senior season. He's already one of Iowa's great players, he could become a bigger legend if he returns...that goes for Jordan Bohannan too, returning as Iowa's all time 3 point shooter, adding to his legacy.

Lol youre a moron. hes averaging more points this year than last year? so what are you even arguing?
attempts up 50%
points up less than 30%
obviously fg and 3% down.

just because you score more points, you're automatically performing better?

lol, ok moran.....

I found a couple of examples in the B1G alone of players going through a Sophomore slump. It’s way more common than you realize.

Seems like we haven’t gotten a lot of 3 pointers in transition. There is a ton of holding going on. We need to send Weezy and CJ to flopping school if a guy grabs you make it look like a foul.

The last half of the year teams have been basically in Joe and CJ’s shorts. I don’t know if we need to set better screens or what. We’ve rarely gone back door either with all the overplaying defense.
